Isaac and I held hands and turned to tell him good-bye.
“Thank you, Reverend,” I said.
“Oh, I almost forgot this,” he said. He was almost at the door when he stopped and dipped his hand into his pocket. He returned and placed the sheriff’s badge on the table. “I think you’ve earned this.”
“Sheriff’s an elected position,” Isaac said.
“Well, something to think about, then.”
Isaac looked me in the eye. He had no desire to be a sheriff, that was clear. It wouldn’t take him long to settle into a new life and put the old one behind him. I looked forward to that haunted look that always seemed to be lurking around the corners of his eyes disappearing, and seeing him grow into a happy, satisfied, accomplished man.
“No, Reverend. I’m a cowboy, plain and simple. All I want is to break horses, raise cattle, drink a little, fill my belly with warm food, and love my wife. Not necessarily in that order.”
He looked awfully pleased with himself, and I couldn’t help but grin at him.
“Typical male,” I said, then grabbed him by the shirt and dragged him down into a kiss.

Thank you to my wonderful editor Alycia Tornetta for her enthusiasm, support, and encouragement. I’m both humbled and grateful for everything you’ve done to make this story better.
To all my amazing betas for reading, commenting, suggesting, and offering your wisdom and assistance in order to whip this story into shape.
To Rufus the cat for keeping my lap warm, and for making me get up off my ass every now and then to let you outside. And then let you back in five freaking minutes later.
To my writing partner and BFF Merissa for always listening to my whining and carrying on, then forcing me to do the hard work required to write the damn book. Whether we write together or separately, you always make writing easier and more fun.
And, of course, to my family for putting up with the time it takes me to write, and always reminding me to spare some time for them.
Lastly, to Mom. I wish you were here to see my first book.
