“Hi, Evan,” she said into the phone, tears welling in her eyes. “Mama loves you and misses you.”
“I think he just shit,” Beau said with a laugh, “but I’m sure he would want me to say he misses you, too.”
“Oh, I wish I was there with you.”
“You will be soon. But first, you’ve got to strut your stuff in your hometown. I’m going to turn you over to Steve while I go change the kid,” he said. “Love you, babe.”
“Love you, too.”
“Have you seen your family yet?” Steve asked right away.
“Not yet. I called my parents and asked if they wanted to have dinner, but they were busy.”
“Bastards.”
She laughed. “I love you, Steve. But you know, it’s okay. I’ll be in Minneapolis in a week, and my uncle and his family have plans for us to get together the whole time I’m there. Family is who cares for you and supports you. I know now who my family truly is.”
“I miss you, honey. We’re marking the days off on the calendar until you’re home. But enjoy your celebrity. You deserve it.”
That her book had hit the bestseller lists as soon as it came out had surprised her. Whitestone set her up with a publicist, who scheduled a five-week cross-the-country book-signing tour, with Chicago the first stop.
“I’d enjoy it more if we were all together.”
“Us, too.”
“Well, I’d better go down to dinner and then get ready for my interview. I love you.”
“Love you, too. Have fun!”
