Few lines for the girl after her departure…
“You left me. You thought that I will forget you after some days. I am not the person who will cry in his whole life after your departure. I will prove myself that I will exist without you. But one thing that you are my first love and I can’t forget you in my life because U broke my heart and the pieces of mybroken heart is continuously hurting my wholebody like the pieces of broken glass in my pocket...”

1. First Meeting With The Guy
I remember that day very well, when I met
him in AUIIT campus on 10th Aug 2016 on our orientation day. He seemed so innocent and shy in nature. That day he sat with his parents and was listening to our Director’s introductory speech with a keen interest. I also sat with my parents and was watching other students with curiosity. During the program my mother felt sleepy due to tiredness as she had just completed a bus journey of 8 hours and directly moved to the college without any rest. After
the speech of all dignitaries, our director invited all of us for a grand lunch in our college campus. During the lunch my parents came in contact with his parents and exchanged each other phone numbers, but still I was unable to talk to that guy.
After the lunch I went to our old
boys hostel Called ‘Sanjivani’ in an auto accompanying my parents. There our hostel warden Saroj Bhai allotted me the room. I shifted my entire luggage to the room. The condition of the room was not quite good, but we were instructed to live there for some days till we would be shifted to our new hostel shortly. My parents helped me to clean the room instantly.
After sometime our hostel Superintendent Mr. R K Mishra came and asked us about our choices for dinner. I opted for bread. He asked me to take rice in the night, jokingly. My mother also answered him with a witty manner that no one prefers rice in the night. Suddenly he told that“Let’s see, some of the folks may go for rice!”and asked another boy about his food preference for that
night. That boy who was allotted just next to my room stayed in the favour of rice. That answer made my mother feel uneasy and I was also amazed. Then my mother entered in to my room and told me, “What kind of boy he is!”
Then we rushed to the nearby market to purchase some commodities for my daily needs. At 5 PM we returned to hostel and after 1 hour my parents paid me adios and left the hostel and came back to my home town Bhadrak. Then I was wondering in the hostel corridor when that boy would come to me to whom I saw in the college for the first time and for whom my mother felt ashamed. Then he said Hello to me & I also replied with a Hello. He asked me my name. I answered and also asked his name. Then after a casual conversation of 15 to 20 minutes for the first time I came to know that the innocent and the decent boy is Sumit Kumar Mohanty from Cuttack district of my home state Odisha. He was studying 10th in Lala Lajpat Rai D.A.V Public School, Gandarpur, Cuttack. After schooling he went to J.K.B.K Govt. Jr. College for studying +2 Science. He passed out from college in 2015 and dropped for one year for the preparation of medical entrance at home and
simultaneously went to Stewart Science College, Cuttack for pursuing bachelor studies in Botany Honors, but later on he joined engineering at AUIIT.
We went to the hostel canteen for dinner. As there was no proper arrangement of messing so the quality of the food was so poor. Then at 10 PM we retired to bed as we had to attend our first class in the college in the very next morning. I left the bed early and went for a bath. But the condition of the bathroom was pathetic and deplorable. Then at 8.30AM I went to the college & on my way Sumit joined me. As it was our first class so we were supposed to give our intro to our teachers by which I came to know some other interesting things about Sumit and other classmates.
Then at 1PM our first day in the college was over. Then we all first year hostel boarders returned to the hostel. On our way to the hostel we had our lunch at our college canteen as
there was no proper messing system in the hostel. Then we went to our rooms to have some rest. As that place was new for us I went outside with friends to have some snacks in the evening.
As that was the first day in the college, we had no home tasks so we both started talking about our past memories and past achievements and some other things. As he was a friendly guy so it was quite easy for me to develop friendship with him. Our bonding was getting better day by day. We started sharing our personal problems and love affairs also.
Eventually I came to know that Sumit had no girlfriend yet and he had never tried to make one. He shared a funny memory with me that during his +2 he was continuously chatting with a girl of his neighbourhood. He had no feelings for her. But one day he jokingly said that she was so beautiful and he liked her. Hearing such words that girl started
over reacting so from that day they had never talk to each other still now. So in that way we spent some of our hostel days peacefully, but after some days we started facing some huddles in our hostel life. We were going to face the real dare of the engineering life called ‘RAGGING’
.
Ragging
THAT day was so stressful because we
had already attended four classes back to back from the morning and was blistering too. We were returning from the college, it was in the afternoon with the Sun overhead and, our seniors had already occupied their seat in front of the hostel and waited for us. When we entered into the hostel premises, they suddenly asked us to stand in a queue. We had to follow their words. Then they asked us to introduce ourselves in English. Then we gave our intro one by one. Some of us started their name with ‘myself’instead of using‘I am’so they rectified our mistakes and told us to start with‘I am’. They also demanded to be pronounced as “Sir” with respect
before their names. We were asked to salute them in a militant’s way. That time the action of Sumit was really very funny. He saluted through his left hand. All the seniors as well as we also laughed at him. We were allowed to move to our rooms after a while.
Few days passed. We were called for another session of ragging in a night nearly 11 PM. We were again asked for a round of intro. They told us to imitate the noises related to pornography. Some of them asked us to name some of the porn stars of India. From our early stage in +2 colleges or in coaching institutes we commonly referred the adult movies as ‘Blue Pictures’, but here seniors asked us to drop that practice & mention it as Porn movies. They were excited to know the numbers of porn sites which were known to us. They asked us the difference between B.Sc and B.Tech. They asked us about our love affairs and also about our feelings towards the girls of our own batch.
They warned us not to propose
any girl of our batch without their permissions. They also told us that before proposing a girl we had to take a certificate from them which cost Rs. 100/-only. Sometimes they told us to act like a‘chakka’. They often told us to act like a bicycle rider or car driver, etc. We’re also instructed to perform on any song or act something interesting to soothe their minds. It all felt like we were unpaid interns out there at their service. They instructed us to wear full sleeve shirts, formal pants and black shoes or slippers.
One day a super senior from the city of Sumit asked him to state a few significant things about Cuttack. He also asked Sumit to explain the methods of proposing a girl. But Sumit could not explain anything as he might not have had any prior. In a new morning when I was with my friends like Swadesh, Muna, Kamesh, and also Sumit on my way to the college our seniors called us from behind and warned to follow the dress code they had
instructed earlier. As we had not such kind of dresses, we requested some days more to arrange those. Luckily they granted our plea.
One of our friend Sampark Sahoo who was from Bhubaneswar had put on those formals from the very beginning days, when our seniors gave us instruction. So we had faced some difficulties and some comments also. Due to his simple style my friend Kamesh fondly named him as ‘Master’.
One day after the dinner hours our seniors again called us for another round of interaction. They took positions in front of us and asked us to stand in a queue. Fortunately the hostel administrative popped up getting some alerts regarding the intros secretly from their sources. Instantly Mishra Sir called our Director Sir. After a while our Director Sir arrived and documented the identities of the seniors involved & warned them strictly not to repeat such practices again. That was
our last ragging experience of engineering life.
In the very next day our Director, Hostel Superintendent, Asst. Superintendent, Student welfare dean came to our hostel and called a meeting with all the seniors. They were strictly warned & given the last warning which would push them to permanent restriction from the institution on the repetition of such task again. After that incident we enjoyed our hostel life freely.
After a period of two weeks our authority ordered only the freshmen of all the disciplines to shift to the new boys hostel named behind the person who discoveredBrihat Jataka ‘Varahamihira Hall of Residence’.
In the new hostel we stayed like a free bird. Sumit was allotted two rooms away from mine in the same row. There was also a girl’s hostel beside our hostel. As all the girls were leaving in another old hostel so our authority also helped them to shift to their new hostel. In our new boys hostel
Mishra Sir took the charge as Superintendent and Suresh Seth sir took the charge as Asst. Superintendent. So there was no scope of ragging anymore in the new hostel. We all stayed like brothers and enjoyed the daily life as well as the hostel life without any fear of ragging.
But I would unbiasedly say, there were lots of kind hearted seniors around us & it was a pleasing experience staying in their company. After few months we started a student initiative club called‘AKKRRITI’. My friend Kamesh was the Founder as well as the President of that club and I was appointed as the secretary. I saw that Sumit had a good skill in photography and he was also good in video editing. So I recommended his name to be the Chief Photographer for the club. This club also helped the first year B.Tech students to get reputation in the whole college and through this club we became more intimate to our seniors.
Season of Love begins
IN the Varahamihira hall, the new hostel
was allotted to us we came in contact with a new friend circle as well as new some well-behaved seniors and our student initiative club ‘AKKRRITI’ helped us to establish a mutual brotherhood relationship among the freshmen juniors & seniors of different disciplines. Through that type of friend circle, our hostel life was going smoothly. As our new hostel was situated inside the college campus, it was quite easy for us to go to the college every day and spend most of the time there. That’s why we were regular in attending the classes. Our Director also advised us from very beginning thatattendance matters more than grades in an engineering life.
During that busy life, it was 25th Nov 2016. According to Sumit may be it was 11 or 11.15AM. He had occupied seat with some friends in the college lawn as there was a gap of one hour then. Suddenly he saw a girl with a yellow colour bag crossed him and moved ahead the M.Sc department. Sumit looked at her for some moments and then continued gossiping with his friends.
Few more days passed away. One day we all the first year student were in our C-lab. Suddenly a girl with black eyes, long hair and fair in colour sought permission and entered to our lab. All our class mates started staring at her. She asked some questions to the teacher and after 10 minutes she left the lab. Then we continued our work again. After that day I was continuously noticing Sumit being in a quite excited state.
I wanted to know what had really
happened. So I went to Sumit and asked about his excitement. Firstly he denied explaining me anything. So I did not put any pressure on him. But in the very next day he came to me. He looked so excited. Before I asked anything he explained from his own side that the girl whom we saw in the C-lab was the same girl whom he saw that day near the lawn. He also added that he was attracted towards her after watching her beautiful eyes. After his explanation I was amazed.
Few days later some of my batch-mates went to NIT-Rourkela to take part in the Tech-fest. That journey was quite memorable for me as it was my first journey with my new friends. During this journey Sumit told his intimate buddies about that girl and requested them to get him some information about that girl. He was also in a search for the contact details of that girl. He was continuously searching her in Facebook from past few days and
fortunately he found her tagged in a photo in a senior’s profile in his friend list.
According to Sumit it was
his first ever attempt when he searched for an
unknown girl in Facebook. Firstly he sent her a
friend-request with lots of excitement but, after 2 to
3 minutes he cancelled it out of fear. But every day
he would open that ID and stare at that girl’s photos
for a long time. After repeating the process for some
days finally he sent the friend request. After few days
that girl also accepted the request.
One evening, Sumit accompanied me in watching the movie ‘Son of Satyamurthy’ in my laptop. I exactly remembered that day. It was 8th Dec, 2016 at 6:40 PM. Sumit requested me for sharing my cellular wifi hotspot with him. I turned it on. He connected with me & accessed the Facebook. Suddenly he told me that the unknown girl whom he sent the friend request was online then. I
