  “Okay.”

Dan half sat on the corner of his desk, his gaze firmly fixed on her. “I ran across the deck of relationship cards this week.”

  Startled, she blinked. “Did you?”

“I opened the deck to a question, and it was a timely one. ‘What is the best gift your partner could give you?’ It’s the one thing I didn’t give you. The gift of trust. I didn’t trust that there was a good explanation. I didn’t trust that, no matter what happened in Vegas, we would deal with it together.”

Dan leaned forward. “I’m telling you now, and I promise that I will show you in the weeks, months and years to come that you can trust me. You can trust me to never walk away from you, to always have your back and to always love you.”

Katie Ruth hesitated. “I was wrong, too. I thought I was protecting you by not telling you. But I promise you can trust me to always tell you the truth.”

  “I almost proposed this morning.”

It took Katie Ruth a moment to find her voice. It came out in a high-pitched squeak. “Proposed?”

“I didn’t want to put you on the spot.”

  Like he did with Lindsay.

  “I-I appreciate that.”

“Right now, it’s just you and me.” Dan rounded the back of her chair to close the door. It was a signal everyone knew that said he was in conference and didn’t want to be disturbed.

When he tugged her to standing, Katie Ruth’s heartbeat quickened.

He held her hands in his. “You, my sweet Katie Ruth, are a wonderful woman who inspires me to be a better man. I realize I disappointed you. I disappointed myself. But if you’ll give me another chance, I promise no one else will ever love or cherish you more than I do.”

Katie Ruth licked suddenly dry lips. “What are you saying, Dan?”

“I love you. Your patience and kindness amaze me. I can’t imagine growing old with anyone else.” Dan dropped down to one knee and pulled a jeweler’s box from his suit jacket. “Katie Ruth Crewes, will you marry me? Will you give me the chance to make you deliriously happy?”

She stared at the sparkling diamond, then lifted her gaze to the man she loved. Yes, he’d made mistakes, but so had she. She firmly believed they could move forward from this time, stronger and wiser than they’d been before.

Katie Ruth had turned this over to God.

Now, He’d turned it back over to her.

“Yes.” The word came out on a choking sob. Katie Ruth found herself laughing and crying at the same time.

When Dan slipped the ring on her finger, Katie Ruth had only a second to breathe a prayer of thanks before he stood and closed his mouth over hers in a soul-shattering kiss.

Deliriously happy? Katie Ruth held him tight. Guaranteed.

  About the Author

Cindy Kirk started writing after taking a class at a local community college. But her interest in words began years earlier, when she was in her teens. At sixteen she wrote in her diary: “I don’t know what I would do if I couldn’t be a writer.” After her daughter went to college, she returned to her passion and jumped straight into composing book-length fiction. She loves reading and writing romance novels because she believes in the undeniable power of love and in the promise of the happily ever after. An incurable romantic and an eternal optimist, Kirk creates characters who grow and learn from their mistakes while achieving happy endings in the process. She lives in Nebraska with her high-school-sweetheart husband.
