“Oh. Did you read them?”
“Oh, sure,” MacAullif said. “You know, they’re damn good. I liked ’em. I didn’t think I would. But the characters, you know, are really good. Particularly the detective. That Hercule Poirot.”
I couldn’t even begin to reproduce MacAullif’s pronunciation of Agatha Christie’s Belgian protagonist. But I didn’t attempt to correct him.
“You liked him, huh?” I said.
“Yeah, I did,” MacAullif said. “Say, tell me. This Agatha Christie. Did she write any more books about him?”
“You’re in luck,” I told him.
“Oh?” MacAullif said. “How’s that?”
I smiled. And I felt good. I hadn’t thought I’d be smiling again so soon.
“It’s a series.”
