Axel Lee had something up his sleeve. His eyes were turned up into a smile, even though his lips were stuck in a fake frown. I’d known Axel all my life, and I knew his expressions like I knew every creak of the floorboards in my childhood home. I could navigate his emotions better than I could navigate my own.
And he was up to something, something that amused him far more than any old trip to the trucking yard would.
“Where are we really going?” I asked him as he batted against the steering wheel in time with the drumbeat coming out of the car speakers. We were heading in the general direction of his dad’s trucking company headquarters, but his explanation for this midnight jaunt to a sleepy, empty parking lot had been lacking, to say the least. “Why would you need to come out here at this time of night?”
“I told you,” he said, exaggerating his frown even more. But I could see the hint of laughter in his eyes. He thought this was funny. “I realized I forgot to lock the truck, and my dad will have my hide if he finds out.”
“Sometimes you are so full of shit, Axel Lee.” I shook my head and laughed. “Your dad couldn’t care less if you locked your damn truck when it’s sitting in the yard, and you know it.”
“It’s regulation.” He flicked his gaze at me just as he hit the blinker to the left, signalling that we were turning into his dad’s offices after all. “Now that I’ve got my CDL for crossing state lines, I’ve got to get more serious about this.”
“Serious.” My lips quirked. “You?”
Truth was, Axel Lee was one-of-a-kind, and that was why I’d fallen in love with him in the first place. He never took anything seriously, not in his entire life, and I’d spent enough time around him to know. He loved to take life slow and easy, the total opposite of me. Where I would get worked up over the slightest of things with the way my worry could overtake my mind, Axel would just smile and say, “Everything will be alright.”
Most of the time, he was right.
But despite his nonchalance at the world, there were two things Axel took seriously. The first thing was…well, it was me. He loved me with a fierce intensity I’d never expected, not in a million years. Me and him were the real deal, for keeps, forever, and I knew deep down in my soul that he meant every word he said to me. He took us just as seriously as I did.
The second thing was his job. You wouldn’t think it looking at him. He approached his shifts like anyone else, as if they didn’t matter to him, as if they were just a way to pay the bills. But I’d heard him talk about his dad’s company, and he loved it almost as much as he loved me. One day he wanted to take over and run it himself, expand it in ways his dad had never even dreamed of.
So, when he said he wanted to make sure he stuck to every regulation as precisely as he could, especially now that he’d gotten his CDL, I believed him.
But that didn’t mean I believed this strange story about why he wanted to come out here. I knew that look on his face. No matter how much he protested, there was far more to this trip than checking locks.
And yet, he pulled through the gates and parked in front of the steel squat building surrounded by naked trees rattling in the cool wind. He cut the engine, turned to me, and winked. “How ‘bout you come with me, Annie?”
“You want me to come with you to see if your truck is locked?” I narrowed my eyes. “Surely you don’t need any help with that.”
He laughed and shook his head. “You’re impossible, you know that?”
“You’re the one dragging me to the truck yard in the middle of the night.”
“Just come with me. Alright? I promise I won’t bite…too hard.” He winked and slid out of the car before opening the passenger door for me. Always a gentleman, even when he was being suspiciously sneaky.
Shaking my head, I climbed out of the car and shivered, pulling my sweater tighter around my shoulders. Winter had fallen early in Tennessee, the end of the year hurtling toward us faster than a bullet train. It seemed like only yesterday that I’d walked across the college graduation stage. I’d told myself I’d take the summer off and live at home while I decided what I wanted to do—and how I was going to find work here in this small town—and then the next thing I knew, it was November. The leaves had fallen off the trees, and summer had long since passed. And my parents wouldn’t stop asking me when I was going to move away to somewhere better, somewhere that I could use my degree.
I never had an answer for them. I didn’t even have an answer for myself.
Moving away might have meant finding the job of my dreams, but it meant something else I couldn’t stand to consider.
It meant moving away from Axel.
I wasn’t ready to do that. Not yet. Maybe not ever.
“You seem lost in that head of yours again,” Axel said, slinging his strong arm around my shoulder and pulling me into his side. Instantly, all the chill vanished, the heat of his body engulfing mine into a cocoon of protection. He smelled so familiar, so strong. Like grease and steel mixed with a minty aftershave. I breathed him in and sighed, letting the tension roll off my shoulders. Being around him always made me relax in ways that I’d never been able to explain. Like my whole body felt still, like I was exactly where I needed to be.
There wasn’t anywhere else in the world that could compare to Axel Lee.

Annie looked at me in that certain way she had, the way that made my breath catch in my lungs. She was the most beautiful fucking thing I’d ever seen in my life. Hell, she got more beautiful every day, as crazy as that sounded. Looking at her now, seeing the winter moonlight caress her soft skin…All I wanted was to keep my arms wrapped around her tight little body for the rest of my life.
And damn, her body was tight. I’d hit the fucking jackpot when I’d landed this girl. No one I’d ever seen had ever compared. Me and Annie, we’d been each other’s firsts. And if I had anything to say about it, we’d be each other’s lasts, too. I had a plan, a ring in a my pocket, and a few words I’d been rehearsing for weeks.
I was going to propose to the girl next door. The only girl I’d ever known, and the only girl I wanted in my bed for as long as I lived.
“Oh look, here’s my truck.” I stopped before the beast that was mine. Usually it was empty when it sat in the yard, but tonight it had a trailer attached. It sat underneath the full moon sky, the glinting steel polished to perfection thanks to my dad’s unending devotion to his business. One day, this would all belong to me. A lot of people snubbed this line of work, but not me. It was good business. We took c
are of all of people’s shit that went from one end of the country to the next. Your prized possession? At one point in time, it sat in the back of a truck as it rumbled down the interstate, driven by a tired trucker with his eyes glued to the road.
Driven by someone like me.
“You’re really going to keep up this charade, aren’t you?” She laughed and shook her head. The sound that came from her mouth was so familiar, so soft, so perfect that it made all the bones in my body ache. God, I hoped she’d say yes. We’d never talked about it, not really. A few jokes here and there but nothing truly serious. Marriage had been something we’d both thought but never spoken aloud, afraid it would only remind of us how little time we had.
I knew her parents were pressuring her to move far away from this tiny town in the middle of nowhere, to a place full of opportunities for a smart girl like her. There weren’t many in a place like this, but I wanted her to know that she had something here, something meaningful. A future.
She had me. I hoped that was enough for her to stay.
“No charade.” I winked at her, ignoring the way my heart beat against my ribcage. “I really do need to check the lock. Care to help?”
I led her to the back of the trailer and opened the doors. Beside me, Annie gasped. Her mouth dropped open as her gorgeous green eyes drank in the sight before us. I’d spent all night getting this ready, and that one look of pure shock and joy made all the effort one hundred percent fucking worth it.
“Axel,” she whispered, a hand fluttering to her throat. “You total bastard. You’re going to make me cry.”
“You like it then?” I asked, my hand finding the ring in my pocket. Just touching the little box made my nerves ease a bit. I was going to ask her tonight, but not quite this moment. Not yet. There were a few more things I wanted to show her first…
“This is amazing,” she said. “I can’t believe you did this for me.”
“This is only the beginning,” I said.

Even after all these years, Axel knew how to surprise me. The trailer had been transformed into the most beautiful bedroom I’d ever seen. Light beige blankets carpeted the steel, dotted with dozens of plush and colorful pillows. Rose petals had been tossed about, pink and red and purple bunches I recognized from the local shop on Main Street. Axel had even draped gauzy curtains on the sides, blocking out any evidence this was a steel box used to haul freight from one state to the next.
He’d done all this for me. And it must have taken him hours.
Axel, my grease-covered, tattoo-loving boyfriend who liked to get his hands dirty.
I was so overwhelmed I felt like I might cry.
“Come on.” Axel climbed up into the trailer-turned-bed and reached out a hand. Smiling, I held tight and let him pull me in behind him. He wrapped his arms around my waist and dropped me onto the bed of pillows, their softness breaking our fall. My whole body felt electric from the look in his eye.
“So,” he said, dropping a kiss onto my lips. “How good did I do?”
“Oh, you did very good.” My smile widened as I let my hand slide down the hard planes of his chest to rest on his belt. “So good that I think you need to be rewarded.”
“Not so fast. I have something I want to give to you first, but you have to do as I say.” He wrapped his hand around mine, pulled it from his waist, and pressed it to the pillow over my head. Heat flamed through me, and I squirmed, loving every moment of this new game he wanted to play.
“I’m not very good at doing what I’m told,” I teased, attempting to press up from the pillows. But he held me tight against them, so strong and so hard that I could barely even move a sliver of an inch.
“So I’ve noticed.” His eyes darkened as the heat flickered through them. His breath was hot on my neck, and my skin felt alive with a need for him that could never be quenched. We’d been together so many times that I knew every single inch of his skin. I knew how he felt, how he tasted, the way his eyes widened when he came. But despite the number of times we’d been together, I’d never been sated. I’d only wanted him more. And more.
“Tell me what you want,” I said, arching my body into his.
He grabbed my other arm and pinned it over my head, gripping both of my wrists in one hand. His tongue traced circles around my ear, and I shuddered, desire pouring through me. I could feel the hardness of his cock through his jeans, pressing into my hip and begging to be inside me. My thighs clenched together as my pussy drenched my panties. God, I needed him. Over and over again until I couldn’t even remember my name.
“I want you to open your legs,” he growled into my ear. “I want you to be all mine. Forever. No man can ever touch you.”
His words sent thrills through me, and I obeyed, spreading my legs wide. The heat of Axel’s body only increased when he felt me shift underneath him, his cock digging into me even more. When he pulled back, he dragged his eyes across every inch of me with pure lust swirling in his dilated pupils. I loved when he looked at me that way, like I was the only woman he ever wanted, like he loved every imperfection on my skin, like he wanted me fully and completely for the rest of our lives.
My heart thumped even harder when he slid my jeans off my shaking thighs and tossed them somewhere into the back of the trailer. I was naked and spread open before him, and even though he’d seen me like this a hundred times before, it still felt as thrilling and exciting as it had the first time. Maybe even more so in the romantic setting and with the cool air pouring in from outside, sending goosebumps across my skin.
Axel pulled my shirt over my head before standing and removing all of his clothes. The pieces dropped around me heavily, one after another until there was nothing between us but air. His cock was hard and erect, throbbing with a need that was echoed in his eyes. I spread my legs wider, inviting him inside me, arching my back to present myself fully to him.
He dropped to his knees, kissing my stomach. His lips trailed further and further south until his tongue lapped against my clit. I shuddered at the explosion of pleasure. His mouth felt so good on my pussy, my wetness pooling more with each passing beat. He knew me inside and out, exactly what made me scream. I was putty in his hands.
Axel began to lick in earnest, his face buried between my thighs. My head dropped back on the bed of pillows as my whole body began to shake. It only took moments for me to come, for Axel’s name to slip out of my screaming throat. We didn’t get many nights like this, the two of us alone together without anyone else around. I felt as if I could truly let go.
As my tremors began to subside, Axel moved on top of me and entered me with a speed that made stars dot my eyes. He was big and thick and hard, and it always took my breath away. He barely fit inside me, my walls expanding just enough for him to fill all of me fully and completely.
“Oh Axel,” I breathed as he thrusted deep, his hips rocking against my aching pussy. Already I was turned on again, feeling a need I only ever felt for him.
“You feel so fucking good, Annie,” he grunted as he slammed against me, desire causing his speed to double. And just when I thought he would cum, he flipped me over and lifted my butt in the air.
Gripping my waist, he slid his enormous length inside my pussy and groaned. He’d always loved this position, not only for himself but for me. It made his cock hit my sensitive G-spot in a way no other position did. And as he continued to thrust, harder and faster, another orgasm built up inside me.
Axel’s fingers dug into my skin, and my own fingers gripped tight around the pillows. Each thrust sent me closer and closer until all that existed in the world was Axel’s dick throbbing against my spot.
A scream ripped through my throat when I came, harder than I ever had before. My juices gushed from me, pouring over Axel’s cock as he came only seconds behind me. I could feel his tremors matching mine, his heavy breaths echoing in the truck, his hands still gripping my waist.
Slowly, he eased out of me, wrapped his arms around my body an
d pulled me on top of him. We were quiet as our breaths began to steady and our heartbeats began to slow. Stars still dotted my eyes, and the sound of our pleasure still echoed in my ears. I was spent, in the best way possible, and I was already looking forward to more.
“I love you,” Axel murmured against the top of my head. “I never thought I could love someone this much, but I do.”
I lifted my head from his chest and looked up to meet his eyes. They were shining with something I’d never seen in them before. “I love you, too.”
“No, I mean it.” He cleared his throat and shifted toward his clothes. A pang of disappointment went through me. I thought we’d have another few hours in here together, but already he was getting ready to leave. “There’s something I’ve been meaning to talk to you about.”
Suddenly, the sound of blaring sirens cut through our little slice of heaven inside the truck. I sat up quickly and snatched my shirt from the floor before poking my head out of the back doors of the truck. The sirens were close and coming even closer. It wasn’t something you often heard in Bakersville and certainly not this far outside of town where the truck yard was.
“What’s going on?” I asked, my heartbeat picking up speed again. I didn’t know why I was nervous. There was no reason to be. Unless we’d accidentally tripped some sort of alarm, and the police were on their way, thinking someone had broken in. “Do you think this is because of us?”
Axel frowned, but he didn’t look convinced. “Maybe. Get dressed.”
We could see the blue of the lights through the bare trees now that they were even closer, barreling down the road that led to the truck yard. With my nerves jangling in my gut, I quickly threw on my clothes while Axel did the same. Hastily, we climbed out of the truck and closed the doors just as the cops pulled up in front of us.
It was the sheriff, a man I’d known all my life. And he didn’t look too happy to see us here.
