The Eternal Defiance Page 13

Harry had a small pistol tucked away in his right sleave. The button on his jacket was a trigger to release the pistol into his hand, which had one shot only. And one shot was all Harry needed. In one swift move he released the pistol and squeezed the trigger.

The bullet hit Baltimore directly between the eyes and he dropped instantaneously.

As per usual Harry had to exit with haste. The cops were close and they weren’t going to take kindly to all the carnage he’s left behind.

Harry had just escaped, but not unnoticed. The cops were hot on his trail. Coming up from the rear, fast was a grey BMW and a couple highway patrol cars.

Harry turned sharp at the next street hoping to lose them and sped down the narrow lane towards the industrial area.

Still hot on his trails, unfortunately the BMW followed close behind with no chance of giving up the chase.

Harry ducked right into another side street and sped along the wharf towards the shipping docks. Water to the left and the old abandoned brickworks factory to the right. Harry didn’t really think this decision through, he thought as his tired brain scrambled for an escape plan.

The BMW had the speed and sat on Harry’s tail like an umbilical cord, not giving him an inch to move.

Harry felt a slight nudge in the rear, but the sports car didn’t have the sheer size to match the Ford pickup, and Harry continued forward.

A quick glance in the revision mirror presented a stream of cop cars now, but the worst thing was his path was rapidly coming to an end. The pier was just ahead and there was only a minute left to decide what to do. “I guess it’s a good a day as any to go for a swim.”

The BMW slowed to a halt as Harry charged through the waist high wire fence and plunged a few metres into the dark murky waters below.

  EPILOGUE

Hall stood on the end of the pier with Assistant Director Clarkson and rookie Dan Walker.

“Another unsolved mystery Hall,” Clarkson indicated.

“No… I think our man is at the bottom of the ocean,” Agent Hall replied.

Clarkson turned and looked Hall directly in the eyes with a grimace look plastered across his face. “But we’ll never know for sure, will we?”

Walker felt the tension between them and understood the frustration the case had taken on his mentor. “I guess he’s taken his secrets with him,” Walker announced in a lighter tone.

A team of divers had been scouring the bottom of the bay for hours and had just finally emerged to the surface, but looked like they’d come up empty handed again.

Clarkson peered over the edge and asked. “Anything?”

One of the divers shook his head in a negative response.

“Okay… people lets wrap this up. I’m declaring the case cold. As far as I’m concerned he did us all a favour and wiped out a few bad guys and got what he deserved in the end,” Clarkson announced with a disappointing tone.

Hall couldn’t believe it was over. Just when she was getting close to solving the case, it had slipped through her fingers. “I’m not giving up sir. I’ve come this far.”

Clarkson frowned at Hall and snapped. “Then it’s on your own time Hall and that’s as much as I’m going to say on the matter.”

He then turned and walked away leaving Hall in a state of defeat and infuriation, wondering if she could ever let it go. I won’t let this beat me Harrison King. I know you’re not dead and I will find you, if it’s the last breath I take.

Harry dragged his tired and beaten body to the edge of the shore and clung onto a large rock to stop from slipping back under the water. His mind drifted in and out of consciousness until finally he regained some kind of second wind.

He wanted to die. He wanted to be with his true love, but something deep down inside begged him to pull himself back together and carry on.

It’s not your time; he heard a voice from within, over and over again.

  “Okay, I’m moving.”

It was late and Harry wasn’t sure how late or how much time had passed. He gazed as the street lights from across the bay danced on top of the lifeless water, leaving Harry in a seductive hypnotic trance.

Hypothermia was setting in and was close to drifting off to sleep again, but decided to push through the pain. He used every ounce of strength he had left in the tank to pull his shivering body out of the cold abyss and find his way back home. If not for himself, but for Blake.
