  Ireland in the 1990s

When Love Comes to Town takes place in Dublin, the capital of the Republic of Ireland. Belfast, where Shane is from, is the capital of Northern Ireland, a politically separate region that is part of the United Kingdom. Since 1920, Ireland has been divided as a result of conflict between Catholic nationalists and Protestant unionists regarding Ireland’s relationship with Great Britain. After the violence of the Troubles, which began in the 1960s and took place mainly in Northern Ireland, the 1990s were a time of negotiations and cease-fires, though tensions continued. Dublin enjoyed relative peace throughout this period.
