by Sherie Keys
She felt as if a dam suddenly broke inside of her and the sea of emotion she had been holding back suddenly burst forth, drowning her in release. “Yes…” she replied quietly at first, barely able to speak as she gazed into his sky-blue eyes. “Yes,” she said, her voice stronger. “I love you too, Adrian.”
She needed to say no more, as his mouth closed over hers and he kissed her for a long while. When he let her go, both of them smiling with bliss, he lowered his hands and held hers with them. “I am going to make you the happiest woman in the world. I promise you that, and I’m going to be the best father Oliver could possibly wish for. Oliver and all of our babies to come.”
Delphine laughed through her tears. “You did save me,” she said softly.
He kissed her again and touched her cheek. “I had to. I love you.”
“I’m glad Justin finally told me your secret.” She smiled up at Adrian.
Adrian’s face turned skeptical. “I am too, to be honest, but if we’re going to be married, there’s probably one more secret I have that you should know before you tie yourself to me forever, and then no more secrets.”
Her smile faded some and she eyed him suspiciously. “What? What other secret do you have?”
Taking a deep breath, he gave her a tender smile. “Julio Rivera works for me. It’s my company that bought the warehouse and all of the properties. It’s me that has supplied all of the funding for this wonderful bee garden work of yours. I didn’t want you to know that it was me, so I had Julio in place as my front man. I decided to help you with it while you were still in Portugal with me. That was the meeting I had in Sintra. Well, it was part of the meeting. I am doing the residential rebuilding work for the refugees as I told you, but this was the other part of the meeting. I wanted this to happen for you, so I made sure that it did happen.”
She was dumbfounded. “You… you did all of this?” she whispered in disbelief.
He smiled at her and gave her a nod. “Yes, I did. I also did a lot of weed pulling, trash clean up, and planting in the new gardens!” He pointed out. A smile grew on her face and she laughed at him.
“Taking care of me right from the beginning?” She gave her head a shake in wonder.
“Right from the beginning. I will always take care of you. What’s important to you is important to me.” He said gently, holding her in his arms.
“I love you,” she said again, loving the way that it sounded and felt. He grinned at her.
“I can’t tell you how much I love hearing you say that. I’m never going to get tired of it.” He leaned down and kissed her again.
The Final Chapter
Oliver awoke to a room full of balloons. He gasped and cried out happily when he saw them all, floating and bobbing along his ceiling, each with a curled ribbon hanging down in a shower of streamers. He giggled and stood on his bed, reaching his hands to try to capture them all.
“Is he awake?” Adrian’s voice came from the hallway as he leaned around the doorway and peeked into the room.
“I think so. It certainly sounds like it!” Delphine grinned, peeking into Oliver’s room from the other side of the doorway.
Oliver laughed at them both and looked around his room. “What is all of this?” he asked excitedly.
“It’s your day, Oliver. It’s our day. Our family day. Today, we are going to go to Beth’s office and sign adoption papers so that you can stay with us forever and be our son,” Delphine told Oliver happily as she came to him and sat on his bed.
His mouth dropped open, and he cried out in utter joy. “We’re going to be a family? For real?” he asked, climbing over to her and wrapping his arms around her neck. Adrian sat near them on the bed.
“Yes, for real, forever,” Adrian answered Oliver.
Oliver grinned and looked at them both. “And you’re going to get married and be my mom and dad?” he asked breathlessly, as if saying it out loud might make it pop and disappear.
“That’s right.” Delphine beamed blissfully. “That’s exactly right.”
Oliver’s happiness overwhelmed him, and his grin dissolved into tears as he sank down onto the bed. Both Delphine and Adrian tried to comfort him, rubbing his back.
“What’s wrong? What’s upset you, little man?” Adrian asked worriedly, running his hand over the boy’s head gently.
Oliver wept for a minute and then finally caught his breath and turned his face up to look at them both. “I’m not upset,” he managed to say through his tears. “I’m too happy to hold it all in. It’s spilling out.”
Delphine and Adrian laughed, and both of them hugged him tightly.
When he was dressed and ready, they took him out to a big breakfast with Josh, Brad, Justin, and Georgia, and when the meal was done, they went to see Beth Downy together. She drew the papers up, and Delphine and Adrian signed them as Justin and Georgia took pictures. It was official. Oliver was their son, and with a wedding date three months away, their family would soon be one.
With all of their friends together, Adrian took them to the boat docks, and unveiled his surprise for them all. A big new sailboat was waiting for them, and along the back of it was the name of the boat, painted in elegant blue swirled lettering: “Delphine”
Adrian, Delphine, and Oliver all held on to a bottle of champagne that was tied to a thin rope, and together they sent it flying to the bow of the sailboat where it burst open, christening the boat. Everyone cheered, and then they all got on to go sail around the sea for the day, eating and drinking, enjoying each other’s company. They stayed out long enough to watch the sunset and the stars and moon come out, and then Adrian and Oliver brought the boat back into the harbor.
When they got back to the house that night, Oliver went to his room and came back out, coming down the stairs with his old pillowcase, still half full of his tattered old orphanage clothes. Adrian and Delphine watched him.
“What are you doing with that?” Delphine asked curiously, as the boy headed for trash can in the kitchen.
He looked up at them and smiled wide. “I’m throwing it away. I know for sure where I am staying now, and I don’t need this anymore. I’m not going back. I’m going to live with my mom and dad in our home from now on.”
Delphine wiped a few tears from her eyes, and she and Adrian hugged their son close to them, together.
Together forever.
