Erdhan stood rigid in the midst of the Keepers, his gaze darting side to side. “I fear this is wishful thinking on Akolom’s part. My parents never hinted at such a lineage.”
Jubel waved a dismissive hand. “It has been hundreds of years since the dragons reigned over the human world. Your parents may not have known of their heritage.”
“Does that mean I’m a dragon rider too?” Franz asked in a half-whisper.
Teldus smiled gently down at him. “Not necessarily. The stone will decide that.”
“There is no time to lose,” Akolom said. “Bring me the light dragon stone and we will put my theory to the test. If Erdhan is a rider, the stone will confirm it.”
The two Keepers guarding the Opal of Light picked up the basket between them and carried it to the mouth of the cave.
“Weave protective runes before we begin so that none are in danger from the Opal’s blinding light,” Akolom instructed the Keepers.
When they had finished constructing a collective protective rune over everyone, Akolom nodded to Orlla. “Invoke the stone.”
A hush of anticipation filled the cave as she removed the lid from the basket and reached inside. With trembling fingers, she held the light dragon stone up to the night sky, mouthing the forbidden rune. As the words flowed, her body felt as if it were aflame, molten magma flowing through her veins, building to the point of explosion.
Suddenly, the sky erupted in a brilliant blue light. The Keepers fell to their knees and covered their heads, thunder rumbling like a herd of wild horses across the sky. A flash of silver cut through the air and then a white dragon dipped its sculpted wings and dove to the ground. It landed outside the cave, sending staggered vibrations through the dirt beneath them. A giant eyeball blinked in a detached fashion, its iris a mesmerizing shade of blue.
In that moment, Orlla recognized the crushing blue of Erdhan’s eyes for what it was—what it had always been—the color of the dragon line he was bonded to.
