Regarding that matter: Last night, Socrates called the crew together for an announcement. He told us that he had heard from Sanctuary, that one of the starfall shipments had disappeared. I confess, I am not surprised by this. Initially, I had hoped that by stowing the black egg in the starfall vats, I might buy the poor creature time to develop and hatch. I was even more certain of this when I realized that one of the vats Socrates had sent to Sanctuary was the one containing the egg.
I suppose I will never know what became of the egg. It is gone now, and I can only speculate that one of the dragons found it and took it to safety. Still, it is hard to say whether the creature will survive long enough to breed and ensure the continuance of his kind. At least I know in my heart that I have given this rare, special breed a chance to survive.
The one thing I know for certain is that I must never, ever, tell anyone what I have done. Socrates would have my hide for this. I doubt even River could find room in her heart to forgive me. These dragons, after all, are such dangerous creatures…
