It’s a gorgeous three-bedroom home, modern, and it passed all of the inspections. It was a cash deal and move-in ready, so I signed on the dotted line once all the formalities were out of the way.
It’s surrounded with oak and pine trees and has a perfect view overlooking the lake. The property it’s on is great as well, very private and personal. It’s the one on four acres. A deck goes all the way around the house on the bottom floor but also has one on the upstairs part. The living room is more that expected, very large, attached to a game room type area that will easily fit a pool table in. The kitchen is top of the line and what you’d see on The Rich and Famous TV show. It’s got the whole open concept thing going on and the dining rooms attached to the kitchen. Master bedroom looks out over the water. Upstairs, there are two huge bedrooms, I’ve already picked out my office, with bookshelves along one wall, and built in hide-able large file cabinets. It’s perfect.
“Hey Griff, come here, I have a question for you.” We’re closing-up on a job today and he’s been staying at my place, not the new one, yet.
“Yeah, what’s up?” He flips his hammer in the air, catching it and hanging it in the holder at his waist, next to the tape measure pocket on his jeans.
“What are you doing for Thanksgiving. I was gonna toss a turkey in and make all the trimmings to go with that.”
“Well I had planned to go to moms and ask you to come with me.”
“Oh okay.” I feel disappointed. “What time?”
“She does it early, it’s the one holiday she loves to cook on.”
“I get that, mine too. Okay, let me rephrase this, did you talk to her about me coming?”
“Yes, she said the more the merrier. Only problem is, she likes to eat around eleven, which is early, right?”
“Nah, food is food and no biggie. Okay, what if I come to you with your mom’s, then we leave and you come with me after.”
“Oh, I should probably warn you, my mom is not standard, she’s making Mexican food for lunch.”
“Perfect, then I’ll get a small turkey and do traditional. My family used to make lasagna or seafood on Christmas, so I get it.”
“Used to? You’ve never talked about your family to me.”
“Oh, I guess I just forgot about them, typical. I’m the black sheep of the family because I’m gay, you know how that works, same story, different guy.” Train wreck!
“I’m so sorry, I didn’t realize.”
“There was no point in bringing it up, they don’t matter anymore. Anyone judgmental like that can take a long walk off a short pier for all I care. They can all go fuck themselves. The family that does still care about me, we stay in touch on media sites or the phone, but the majority of them live a long way away so we don’t see each other much. The other family that disowned me are close enough, but don’t try. It’s no biggie though.”
He caresses my face in his palm. “I’m sorry.” He sighs. “That sounds like a perfect plan for Thanksgiving, I love turkey and dressing.”
“Me too, I make it every year, just for myself though.” I must look pathetic. “Do you want to stay the night with me tonight?”
“Sure, then we can head to mom’s first thing in the morning, then back to your place for dinner.”
“Sounds perfect.”
Good thing I already went to the store for the food and stuff for the holiday. It’s already at the new place. I can’t wait to surprise him with all of it.
Chapter 16
Griffin’s mom is a total doll, typical mom, but sweeter than most. Carefree and full of zest, I love her to pieces, so kind and considerate. Very polite. After we finish helping her clean up, we head out.
I pass the exit to where my normal spot is and he reaches out for my arm.
“You missed the exit, babe.”
“I know, but I have something I need to do first.”
“Yeah, what’s that? Stores are closed everywhere until later this afternoon.”
“I know, I’m not going to the store. Quit it already, you’ll see soon enough.”
We get all the way to Conroe and hang a left on Hwy 105. I have mapped this out several times and take the long way around to my house, so he doesn’t catch on to where we’re going. I want to slip in from the side road.
“Are you taking me fishing again, want a repeat of last time?” He laughs. “I could have done that at your place.”
“I bet you could have, I have no doubts you could have.” I turn and smile at him.
“Did you like that?”
“I fucking loved it.” I wiggle my eyebrows at him.
“I could do it now for you, blow you off while you’re driving.” He starts to lower his head.
“No, not just yet, sit up straight and behave yourself. Maybe later.” I don’t want to crash and I know I would.
“On the ride home, hell yeah.”
“Mmm… hmmm.” Hell yeah, he just has no clue where we’re going.
“Yay me.” He claps his hands together and I crack up laughing.
“You are so silly Griff.”
“I try, it’s a skill.” God I love him too.
“My only skill was being a disaster until you came around. How did you manage to change that by the way?”
“Not sure, but glad I did.”
“Me too, so grateful to you accepting me for me.”
We pull in the driveway and he looks at the house, smiling. “Is this one I picked out?” Um yes, but no.
“I ran across it and just wanted to take a quick look at it, it’s beautiful isn’t it?”
“It’s amazing and you’re almost out of time, so you need something and quick unless you plan on staying at my place.”
“Uh, I still have mine for another couple weeks, I payed extra for them to extend it a little longer. Let’s go look.”
“It’s perfect from the outside, it looks familiar though, like one I looked at for you.”
“This one wasn’t in the paperwork you gave me. It costs a little more.” It is the one he picked out but he saw so many he can’t remember.
I love that he took days to do this for me and I hope I can surprise him even more. Griffin has become come one important in my life and if I could fill that destiny every day with him, I would love it. To show him how I much I care, today the first meal will be cooked with him at my side in my new home. The lockbox is still on the door and I go turn the combo to get into it.
The house is perfect, I met the furniture peeps here this week, and the guys I hired got all of my stuff here earlier this week. I slid up and unpacked everything, brought the Thanksgiving dinner up and everything is in place.
“It’s early afternoon, lets look over the property. Look at the lake from here, I love that it surrounded in trees but has a clear view of it. Notice the swing out between the trees, the double trees just across from it would be the perfect place for a hammock, right.”
“I’d pay these people just to be able to hang out in the backyard, seriously.” He wraps his arm at my waist.
“Let’s go check out the inside now.” WE walk way from the edge of the boat dock and up to the house.
I already have my keys to every door in the place, so I take us to the back door and reach in my pocket to grab them.
He peers through the window. “That looks like your pool table in there, like identical.”
I look through the window, pretending to be n shock. “Yeah it does.”
“Let’s go in.”
Griff agrees and walks toward the front, but I quickly let him know the back door is open after I stick my key in the lock.
“Who in their right mind leaves the door open?” He looks from side to side.
“Maybe the owner who is now on the property.” I grin at him.
“Wait, what? You are the owner, you bought this? I need to check it out. OMG.” He runs back to me and jumps at me, “I freaking love it, and I can’t believe you didn’t tell me before.”
“Surprise.

We go inside and he plows through each room and I pull out everything for Thanksgiving and start baking. I have everything for the turkey, cornbread dressing, green bean casserole, mac & cheese, broccoli and cheese, rolls and pies, apple, pumpkin, pecan, and lemon. We’ll be eating for days on this.
He finally comes back to the kitchen. “I can’t believe you didn’t tell me.”
“Do you approve?” I cross one leg over the other.
“I more that fucking approve, this is beautiful Calen. I would have decorated it the same way as you did. When did you have time to do this, we’ve been together everyday?”
“I have people that work for me, I just told them where to place it all.”
“But the dinner too, for Thanksgiving???” His hand goes straight to his hip in that cocky mode he goes into.
“Well, I did that just for you. So you really like it?”
“I more than like it, I love it. It’s perfect, the way you have the set ups, it’s just amazing. I love the outside deck off the master bedroom too, you’re really going to enjoy it, oh and be able to see the water too, I know you miss that.”
After preparing everything, I slide the turkey in the oven and know I have about four hours to wait beside tossing in sides so everything comes out just as planned, all cooked and hot. Hmmm…how to kill four hours?
“Wanna play a game of pool with me?” I ask him and pull him in close.
“Sure.” He kisses me.
We play two games and a game of darts then go sit in the living room and I turn on the smart tv I just bought and curl up next to each other and get halfway through a movie.
“Come with me.” I take his hand in mine.’
We move into the kitchen and I check dinner.
I pull my keys out of my pocket and pull one of the house keys off of it, then loop it off the ring and bend on one knee.
“Griffin, I was a complete disaster when we met and you stuck with me. Thank you for that. Will you move in with me?
“You were a train wreck, and yes I will. You are my glorious disaster and I love you.”
“And I love you too.”
He takes the key from my hand and loops it on his keyring.
Guess that’s it. From here we start our new life.
