Bureaucratic sled dog that he was, Cox spent quite a lot of effort every day just trying to keep his job; he wasn’t the brightest pup in the litter. He ended up being used by smarter people with agendas, as I had seen with the NSA and bank adventure. Somewhere along the way, Shadow and her brother glommed on to him through the terrorist connection. They started feeding him information, which helped him look good. I’m not precisely sure how that got started—not even Karen could find out, and if she can’t find something out, it can’t be found—but they must have supplied him with something related to a drug deal in the City of Sin, and I suspect that at that point he reacted with so much enthusiasm about screwing Las Vegas that they knew they had their man. They just had to reel him in.
Was he dirty? Or just a dupe?
Can’t tell you. I think he probably thought he could play both ends against the middle. I think he honestly wanted me at the port because he didn’t want the place blown up. I think he hated Las Vegas, but I don’t know that he hated it enough to fall in line with a terrorist plot to blow it up. I think he did realize that the terrorists were running drugs and smuggling all sorts of things like weapons in and out of the country, and I think he wanted to do something about it. He just wasn’t smart enough to do the right thing about it.
But that’s my opinion; you’ll have to form your own on that.
This much I know, because they told me: one of the du Bocs, or maybe both, killed him in Vegas. And the whole story of what happened between him and them died that night as well.
The FBI shut down the Bosnian company after the dust settled in Vegas. That’s the Fucked-up Bureau of Incompetents for you; they spring into action once it’s safely too late. Any day now they’ll be telling us that Abe Lincoln’s been shot and they think they know who did it.
The French were right about how the cells worked. What the French didn’t understand was how long these people had been working on this. Nearly a ton of Semtex had been installed in Starship Vegas, apparently by cells completely unrelated to the ones that tried to detonate it. In fact, if it hadn’t been for the du Bocs infiltrating the system and trying to use it for their own personal vengeance, it’s likely the radical ragheads would have succeeded. There would have been no dramatics on the top of the tower, no hesitation pushing the button. Two of the drivers of the gas-rigged trucks blew themselves up rather than let themselves be captured. Another gave it a good try, but the asshole hadn’t wired himself properly. I promise to do it for him as soon as he returns from whatever rock they’re going to hide him under for the next fifty or sixty years.
All of the cells that were involved were rounded up. That wasn’t a huge accomplishment: a good portion, including everyone who’d infiltrated the hotel’s security staff, were already dead, killed either by me or during the assault or in a last suicide pact in the bunker. Not one of the people who took over the hotel had been on any sort of watch list at all.
The funding network, the infrastructure that made this all possible—was still there, untouched. Inconvenienced a bit, with the import-export business down and the agency that doesn’t exist now wise to their methods, but the bottom line is: they’re still there. Osama, or whichever crazy asshole beyond him is calling the shots…still there.
In my view, their big mistake was importing the old gas. Tests the Army conducted on the canisters after the fact found that the stuff, though still nasty, had lost a good portion of its potency. There’s a lot worse stuff in train yards and truck depots and nuke plants all across America. Nobody wants to hear about it, though.
“It’s too damn depressing, Dick.”
“You’re becoming a pessimist.”
Let me be optimistic for a second; let me put on my positive-thinking hat: I am a mean, wrathful son of a bitch, and I am sure that’s the way the world really works.
Doom on us if we don’t get wise to it. Ah, for the peace and quiet of a small war!!!
