Swamps and Soirees: A Summerbrook Novel Page 26

by Vicki Wilkerson

Thanks also go to my Lowcountry friends, Louis and Becky Nexen. Louis is the source of many colorful stories about characters and events. Specifically, I must thank him for inspiring Cubi-Jack. And his better half, Becky, is my quintessentially proper Lowcountry girlfriend who understands how important a really good pimento cheese dip recipe is to a Southern woman’s repertoire and why we feel guilty wearing white after Labor Day.

For each of my projects, I must thank my high school sweetheart (who is finally my husband) Tom for supporting me at every turn, um, page. His support involves joining me each evening in my library at Gardenia Hall, the Victorian home we are renovating and the perfect place to channel Lowcountry stories and to write (the house is especially inspirational in my Lowcountry stories because it is tied so some very prominent Charleston families—the Manigaults, the Draytons, and the Middletons). Each evening, we’d share a glass of wine to discuss what I had written during the day. He was also my human encyclopedia for some of the information I gleaned for this book about historic boat building and renovation (because he also was/is a boat builder). Not only did he support my time away from him, housework and cooking, he encouraged my research by taking me to the swamps where this novel was set to provide me with more ideas and impressions of the low, wet lands that I painted with words in this book.
