His large calloused hands gripped her hips as if ready to pull her closer. I froze as his eyes met mine. I could see the moment it clicked.
Dragging my eyes from his, I put my car in reverse and started to back out. I couldn’t stay here. I pressed harder on the pedal as he pushed her away.
He was coming for me, and I couldn’t let him catch me. Once all four of my tires hit the road, I was pulling the shift stick into drive and pressing hard on the gas pedal.
The tires squealed as my car accelerated. I looked at him in the rearview mirror as he chased the Jeep and could see him screaming.
I knew he was yelling my name, but I wasn’t stupid enough to turn around. The little hope I had harbored evaporated.
Sam and that woman would be an image forever burned into my brain. It will be the mark that reminded me that happiness was fleeting, and love was a fool’s endeavor.
Chapter 31
Sam
Jessica stepped closer, and I couldn’t help but smile. It’s been years since I’ve seen her. She was the woman I thought the sun rose and set on. The woman who ripped my heart from my chest.
I was a dumbass and I knew that now.
“Tom it’s been too long.”
Her voice was filled with desire something I would have been all over until Lexa.
“Not long enough Jessica.”
Teasing her was easier now that I finally understood what it was to really love someone. To have an old lady. That shit clicked with Lexa.
She stepped closer, forcing my legs to open and let her in. My hands gripped her hips, keeping a small amount of space between us.
Her finger ran down my chest as she smiled sweetly at me. That smile would have gotten me all riled-up years ago. That sweet ass would have been bent over this bike.
That was then, and this was now, and she wasn’t Lexa. The sound of tires on pavement grew louder, raising my eyes and met Lexa’s.
My heart stopped. Her eyes were full of tears as she reversed the car. Shoving Jessica away, I ran. I watched in complete and utter terror as she squealed up the road. My feet still slamming into the pavement as she put as much distance between us as possible.
I continued to scream her name long after she turned a corner and disappeared. A hollow feeling opened up in my center, and my world crumbled slightly.
I wanted to get on my bike and hunt her down, but I knew she was long fucking gone. Reaching my bike Jessica was sitting on it waiting with a smile.
Did she not just see me chase another woman?
“Get the fuck off my bike.”
Her eyes grew big and fake tears filled them. Jessica was heartless, something I needed to remember.
“Tom…”
“Enough. Look, it was nice seeing you, but my old lady is out there hurting. I’ve got to go.”
“Old lady…”
I didn’t say another word or even acknowledge her presence. I’m an asshole and I know it. Pulling out of the lot, I put space between us. I needed to call Kell and I sure as fuck didn’t want to do it around her.
Chapter 32
Lexa
Big sobs shook my chest. Pain radiated through me. My world froze like it was knocked off its axis and pulled from the sun’s warmth.
Driving became difficult and I knew I needed to pull over and beg for help. The only person I could turn to was Kell. The road was empty just like the spot my heart use to be.
Gripping the wheel tighter I fought the need to find a bar and drown in the all the liquor.
Hurt started to turn to anger. Why did I care? Pulling over I grabbed the phone and dialed Kell’s number.
“Lexa? I wasn’t expecting to hear from you so soon.”
I wanted to smile. I wanted to pretend the last thirty minutes didn’t happen.
“I need help.”
He was silent for a moment and a lump formed in my throat.
“What do you need?”
His voice was strained, almost sorry.
“Sam was here having… with… shit. He was with another woman and I just can’t, Kell.”
The curses that spilled over the line would make a sailor blush.
“Where are you?”
I looked around the windy road.
“I have no clue.”
Another round of curses.
“Keep going until you find a city and call me back.”
Relief wasn’t as wonderful as I had hopped.
“Thank you, Kell.”
“I’m sorry, Lexa.”
It was all I heard before the line went dead. I had no idea why he was sorry. Looking out at the vast emptiness, I wished for a more carefree time.
Then I heard it, the sound of a bike. Chills raced all over my body, even though it was hot a fuck outside. He found me.
I knew it was him. It had to be. The thrill that came with that thought had anger rising. I closed my eyes and hoped he hadn’t found me. Starting the engine, I began to put it in gear when a bike appeared in front of my car. Effectively blocking me in.
I knew I could go in reverse, but my hand wouldn’t move. Not when Sam was looking at me with such disappear. He looked broken and that broken soul called to mine.
I watched as he climbed off his bike, and my fingers twitched to run down his solid chest. Snap out of it, Lexa! He was just with another woman!
Gripping the shift stick I started to pull on it slightly.
“Don’t you fucking do it Lexa of I will slap your ass until it’s nice and red.”
My panties dampene at the thought. Another course of anger rushed through my veins.
“How dare you!”
Chapter 33
Sam
Her eyes widen as the words left my mouth. I watched the shock quickly turn to anger. As I walked slowly to her car, I was hoping she wouldn’t run my ass over.
“Lexa, please shut the car off and listen to me.”
I watched those beautiful eyes close as her chest rose harder and fell before repeating.
“I can’t do this, Sam.”
“Just give me a chance baby.”
She looked ready to argue to send me on my way. I needed her to hear me.
“Sam…”
“Please darlin, I will get on my knees and beg you if that’s what you want.”
The shock was back. Reaching the door handle, I tugged the door open. Reaching inside, I shut her car off and unbuckled her before pulling her into my arms.
“She was my past. The one I thought was meant for me.”
Her body stiffened, and her head turned so she was looking at the ground. I was fucking this shit up, but she needed to know the truth and so did I.
Chapter 34
Lexa
Pain radiated out in pulses as he admitted she was his, even if it was a past thing.
“Jessica was a childhood friend. We grew up together.”
I didn’t want details. Why was he making me listen to all of this? Jessica was his one.
It was a small town and I just knew the first time she tripped into my arms that she was mine.”
Again, that stabbing pain.
“Please stop, Sam.”
“That’s the point, Lexa.”
Confusion wanted me to ask what he meant, but the pain wouldn’t let me.
“She calls me Tom.”
I didn’t understand.
“Only a few people call me Sam and they mean a lot to me. There’s this one in particular who stole my heart…”
The air stilled in my lungs once again. I feared my brain would damage with the lack of oxygen.
“She ripped my heart out when she slept with my friend and I thought all feelings went with her. I was wrong baby.”
That foolish hope tried to come back.
“I need you, darlin.”
All the good feelings left when I realized he wouldn’t want me when he finds out the truth.
“I can’t Sam.”
The look of pure devastation, of a soul being sh
attered, met my eyes when I looked into his.
“You don’t know me, Sam.”
“I fucking love you.”
Looking at my hands, I tried to make myself shrink into his arms.
“I killed a man, tortured him and killed him. He did horrible things, Sam. I did horrible things.”
His hands tightened slightly, but he kept silent.
“He killed Lisa and so many others. She endured horrible things to give me a chance at freedom. I deserve the hell that I just felt. The fire burned me from the inside out at the thought of you and her.”
“Baby…”
I didn’t let him continue. Instead, I pressed a finger to his lips.
“I promised to free them. To go places and see new things, to let them have that beauty.”
“That’s why you left?”
“Yes and no.”
It would be so easy to just agree.
“I thought you loved Texas and I couldn’t be the second choice. I couldn’t stand there and watch you pine away for someone who obviously belonged to another.”
“I killed a man and then I let myself have you. Blood covers my hands, Sam.”
“Baby blood covers more than just my hands. I’ve killed and tortured many.”
Meeting his eyes, I felt that hope spark and this time I didn’t fight it.
“I love you darlin.”
Swallowing, I pressed my lips to his. A gentle, sweet kiss.
“I love you. Sam.”
Before I completely registered what was happening, I was on my feet facing the hood of the Jeep. Light blue and black stripped skirt pulled up over my ass as he pressed me against the hood.
My underwear ripped under his ruff handling. Then he was slamming home. I was soaked making it easy for him to just glide all the way in.
I screamed in both pleasure and pain as Sam started to fuck me hard against the hood of the car. Screams spilled from me as he pulled out to the tip and slammed back into me. Over and over again.
Each return thrust had him hitting my cervix. Pleasure was a fog coating my brain, and my body bowed as he pounded into me harder and harder. My orgasm was quick and so was his.
Warmth filled me as he found his release, his lips coasting over the nape of my neck. Little shivers followed in their wake.
“I love you baby.”
“I love you too Sam.”
Epilogue
Eight months and five days later….
“Push baby. Just one more push.”
Reaching over I grabbed Sam’s leather cut in my fist. I pulled him closer with as much angry strength as I had.
“I’m going to cut your dick off Sam.”
His eyes widen as he paled slightly.
“Baby…”
“Don’t baby me Sam!”
Another contraction hit, and I grunted as I bore down hard.
“I see the head. One more good push Lexa.”
They said that three fucking pushes ago. Another grunt as I pushed as hard as I could, using every muscle in my body.
The most beautiful sound reached my ears as my body sagged in relief. My baby cried, and it filled the room as the nurse bustled to clean her.
“We’re almost done, just cleaning you up momma.”
I smiled weakly at the doctor as my eyes strayed to my little world. Sam was hovering, and the nurse was shifting nervously.
I laugh slightly as he pressed closer, trying to silently hurry her along.
“Sia.”
Sam turned to look at me.”
“Her name is Sia Douglas.”
“Thanks, darlin.”
Then he picked up our daughter and brought her to me. His eyes were full of love and happiness as he laid her in my arms.
“She’s perfect.”
I whispered the words to myself.
“Just like her mama.”
Tears filled my eyes as he leaned over and pressed his lips first to my lips, then to her forehead.
“I love you Sam.”
“I love you darlin.”
