The Squadron That Died Twice Page 16

by Gordon Thorburn

Ken Turner, shown here in training, was WOp/AG with Benny Newland in R3904 UX/K, the first machine of A Flight to go down. The pilot was injured but was able to get out of the doomed aircraft. Turner and his observer mate, Yorkshireman George Ankers, were both killed.

Sq/Ldr Norman Jones, pilot of Blenheim T1827 UX/H and leader of the second section of A Flight, was 27 when he was killed at Ålborg, having been with 82 Squadron for three weeks.

For Tom Graham, Ålborg was a baptism of fire. Although he’d been on squadron since the end of June, he had never seen the enemy, nor had his fellow crew members.

P/O Thomas Cranidge, observer in UX/H, was 26 when he died. He was from Crowle, on the Isle of Axholme, north Lincolnshire.
