“What did he do, Sam? Besides fall in love with your mother and have a beautiful child? And then spend a lifetime trying to make it up to you and your mother?”
“I…I know that now, Jake. My grandfather told me many things. Things he said that my mother tried to tell me but I wouldn’t listen.” She hesitated then acknowledged, “I know what you’re thinking, Jake. That it’s how I keep people away…like I tried to do with you.”
Jake agreed with a frown. “As painful as it is that you thought that I would hurt you like that, Sam, that I would spring your father on you at a fucking party that I’d invited you to, we have a bigger problem. You need to understand, Sam. Understand how upset I am. By refusing to talk to me, by not confiding in me, you could have been killed. When you decided that Mingan and his guys couldn’t have done what we accused them of, you didn’t tell me. That was critical information, Sam. The team was depending on you for your insights, your greater understanding of Mingan and his gang. But you chose not to share your concerns with me, your commanding officer.”
She shook her head in dismay at his tortured expression. “I know that, Jake, and I’m sorry.”
He huffed a huge sigh and shook his head. “Jesus God, Sam. You could have been killed. If I hadn’t put Henry on your tail, when I got your text I wouldn’t have known you were at Kate’s. Do you understand that? Do you know how much that pains me? To know that I might not have found you in time? That you could have been killed?”
Sam slammed her eyes closed, pained by the raw agony creasing his face and knowing that her actions had put it there. Sucking up every bit of courage she had, she asked the question she needed to ask—no matter how much she dreaded the answer. “Can you forgive me, Jake? Forgive me for being who I am?”
He snorted, a rough sound. “Can I forgive you for being the most challenging woman I’ve ever known? For being determined that you don’t need or want anyone but yourself? That you are unwilling to let go of that formidable barrier you’ve built around you to keep anyone from getting too close to you, from loving you?”
Horrified at his conclusion, Sam felt sick, overwhelmed with the need to tell him that he was wrong, that she wanted him. That she needed him more than anything in her life. She tried to speak, to disagree, but was so overcome by emotion she could only shake her head.
He groaned and reached for her, pulling her into his arms. “Fortunately, Sam, I’m such an arrogant asshole that I convinced myself I could do the impossible. That I could break through Samantha Kalani Delgado’s glacier hard shell and reach the passionate, vulnerable woman I knew lived beneath the formidable barrier she’d constructed to protect herself. It’s a good thing that I’m as egotistical as I am, because I truly believe, Sam, that if I love you the way I intend to, that you will give in and return the favor. Yeah, that you will continue to be the feisty woman who needs her ass spanked on a regular basis, but also the woman who, God help me, isn’t afraid to love me as much as I love her.
After many moments of tearful apologies and promises and Jake holding her as tightly as she was clinging to him, Jake picked her up and carried her into the bedroom. She excused herself and went in the bathroom to try to repair her tear-ravished face. She washed her face and did what she could to get control over her ricocheting emotions. Looking in the mirror, Sam wasn’t surprised to see her flushed cheeks. Given the currents of excitement beginning to spill over her thinking about the erotic night that she knew was ahead of her, she grinned. God, if anything, she should have been flushed from head to toe.
Hearing the seductive tones of Dylan’s “Lay Lady Lay,” and smelling the sensual, piney odor of burning logs, Sam’s heart beat faster in anticipation. Entering the bedroom she saw Jake tossing pillows onto the floor in front of the burning fire in the fireplace. His sexy grin spoke volumes as he winked at her.
“I thought you might like to make love in front of the fire. In case we needed a little more heat.”
Glancing at the array of suspicious looking objects spread on the end of the bed, Sam frowned and stepped back. In addition to the handcuffs she’d seen before were a number of other more complicated restraints. As if that wasn’t bad enough, next to a couple of blindfolds were several more alarming things. Sam managed to ask in a reasonably assured voice, “What are all of those things for?”
Jake shrugged. “I need tools to do all of the outrageous things I plan to do to you.”
Sam swallowed and picked up what looked like a leather tipped flogger, and asked tentatively, “I…what is this for?”
Jake said blandly, “It seems that I’ve become fixated on your ass.”
Trying to imitate his nonchalance, Sam responded carefully, “It would appear so.” Picking up a tube of lubricant lying next to what looked like some kind of an insertion device, she said, “If this is what I think it is, I don’t want you to do this to me. Ever.” At his raised brow, she insisted, “No, Jake, I know I won’t like it.”
Jake grinned. “How do you know until you’ve tried it?”
Sam was firm. “I just know I won’t.” Seeing the twinkle in his eyes, she stammered, “Will I?”
His voice was soft, provocative. “It’s like a lot of things that you’ve convinced yourself you can’t or won’t do, Sam.”
She huffed with a frown. “And anal sex falls in that category?”
He was firm. “I’m betting that it does, Sam.” Picking up the flogger, he winked at her. “But first I need to spank you, warm you up.” At her gasp, he grinned and to her horror, picked up a pair of what looked like nipple clamps. With another nonchalant shrug, he explained, “These are to prove that I’m as obsessed with the rest of your body as I am with your ass.”
Laying the ominous looking objects on the end of the bed, he motioned to her. “Come here, Samantha.”
Her voice was contorted, indicative of her rioting emotions. “Why should I?”
“Because, Sam, you want me as much as I want you. And because I need to kiss you and then begin the arduous process of convincing you that I love you more than I knew it was possible to love someone.” At her questioning frown, he added, “And, Sam, best of all, to convince you that you love me as much.”
She glanced warily at the erotic tools and asked, “And to do that, you need those?”
Jake laughed, “Damn straight, Chief Delgado. You think I don’t know that I have a feisty woman to tame?”
Sam managed a crooked smile. “Well, if anything can do that, those can.” She added, “As long as you’re the one using them. I wouldn’t allow…”
He interrupted her. “Never fear, Samantha. The only man who will ever touch you is standing before you, in awe of the most beautiful woman in the world.” He added with a wink, “Now get your delectable ass over here, tiger, so I can go to work on it.”
Sam tipped up her chin and said with as impudent smile as she could manage given her racing heart, “Start working, Commander, or I might have to try a few of those scary looking things on you.”
Jake’s shout of laughter filled the air. “Oh, baby, it’s a good thing we have a lifetime together. It’ll take me that long to love you the way I intend to love you.”
Sam smiled through her tears and said with a heartfelt sigh, “Ditto, Commander Justice, ditto.”
