  Fletcher and Sophie both giggled. “I hear he plans on going home to Clear Creek for the holidays,” said Fletcher. “He’s got quite a large family there, as I recall.”

  “Speaking of large families,” Betsy said. “You sure you want to wait until Christmas to tell your parents and grandparents about that little one?”

  “I’m positive,” Fletcher said. “And as this town’s new mayor, I’ll make my announcement into a speech. Grandfather will love it.”

  “Mm-hmm. Well, one thing’s for sure. At least with a little one in the house, he won’t miss being mayor so much.”

  “No, he’ll be too busy chasing James or Alice all over the house,” Fletcher agreed. James and Alice were Sophie’s parents, may they rest in peace. “Eventually, Father and Mother will move in here with them and we’ll take over their house.”

  “Or your grandparents will move in with your parents, and you’ll get this one,” Betsy said. “This is the mayor’s house, after all, and you are the mayor.”

  Fletcher smiled, looked at his wife and pulled her into his arms. “I am, aren’t I? In that case, I’ll have to pass a new city law that says you have to kiss me like we did that one day, for forever and always.”

  Sophie’s eyes widened. “That kiss? How do you think I got this way?” She put a hand to her belly. “How many children are you planning we have?”

  He grinned. “Lots.” And he kissed her soundly.

  Gran Mercy joined Betsy and stared. “Don’t they look lovely?” Mercy asked with a smile. “Just think, soon we might be hearing the pitter-patter of little feet!”

  Betsy gave her a sideways glance. “Mm-hmm …”
