  Chapter 1

Lincoln Maxwell had just graduated from college and was now a certified schoolteacher for elementary education. He was glad that he was now able to teach children like he wanted to. He was ready to get hired at the elementary school down the street from his parent’s house. He would get an apartment once school was in session, and he started to get paid. His father wanted to rent him a house like he did his little brother Cade, but Link wanted to do everything on his own. He didn’t want his father to pay for things like that.

Thinking about Cade made him decide to go talk to him and his husband, Bradley, about the possibility of him being gay. He knew his brother was gay, and it didn’t bother him. Was it something in his genes that would make brothers gay? Bradley’s older brother Clayton was gay and married to a heart surgeon in town. So, for him to think he was gay wasn’t beyond a possibility. He drove over to Cade and Bradley’s house and knocked on the door.

Bradley opened the door and smiled when he saw it was Link. “Come on it. We were just having some coffee. Do you want a cup?”

“Yeah, thanks, that sounds good. I need to talk to Cade.”

“Oh, ok, do you need some privacy?”

“No, you’re going to hear about it soon enough anyway. Maybe you can help put some insight into it as well.”

“Ok, yeah, I’ll do anything to help all I can.”

Link nodded as they walked into the kitchen. Cade looked up from his newspaper and smiled when he saw it was Link. “Hey, big brother. How are you?”

Link sat down in a chair across from Cade as Bradley slid a cup of coffee in front of him. “Well, little brother, at the moment, I’m completely confused. I need some help.”

“Sure, what do you need, Link?”

“I don’t know how else to say this, so I’m going to just come out with it. I think I might be gay.”

Cade and Bradley sat and stared at him until he started to be uncomfortable. Finally, Cade said, “You think you might be gay? How do you not know?”

“I don’t know how you tell if you’re gay.”

“Well, most gay guys would rather have a man than a woman. I know you have always dated girls. I have never known you to date a guy before.”

“No, not until I met Alex Duncan. I took him as my date to your wedding, and then a couple of times after that, we went out to dinner.”

  “Have you slept with him?”

“No, of course, not. I’m not saying it hasn’t crossed my mind.”

“Have you slept with any girls?”

“Getting a little personal there aren’t you little brother?”

“Just trying to get an idea if your gay or not. That’s why you came here, isn’t it?”

“Yeah, I guess so. Ok, no, I haven’t slept with girls or guys. I haven’t had any experience either way.”

“What about kissing them, have you kissed girls and Alex?”

“Yes, now that I have done.”

“Well, which one did you like best? Kissing a girl or kissing Alex?”

“Alex hands down. It wasn’t even weird when I kissed him.”

“Between the two, girls or Alex, who do you want to kiss again?”

“Alex, of course, he’s a really great guy. I think if I’m gay, then I want a relationship with him.”

Bradley shook his head and looked at Cade. He looked back at Link and said, “You better start making plans to have a relationship with Alex because dude, you're gay. No doubt about it.”

Link smiled. “Yeah, you think so?”

Cade laughed. “Yeah, brother, we think so. You would not want a relationship with Alex if you were straight.”

“That was what I couldn’t understand. I really like Alex and not just in a friendly way. I want more with him, and I was worried that if I wasn’t gay that I would hurt him, and I didn’t want that to happen.”

Bradley asked, “Do you want to stay for dinner? I am making spaghetti?”

“Thanks, I would, but I have another dinner date with Alex. I think we are going to a movie too. You guys want to come with us?”

Cade shook his head. “Thanks, but we have some plans after dinner. We have to go look at the new house that John’s dad just bought us. It has a pool. You’re going to have to bring Alex over, and we’ll have some dinner and swim for a while.”

“Yeah, I would like that.” Link said as he looked at his watch. He needed to hurry, or he was going to be late picking up Alex for dinner. He said goodbye and then went out and got in his truck and headed for Alex’s house.

Link pulled up to Alex’s driveway, and Alex ran out and got into the truck. He smiled at Link. “How are you doing, Link?”

“Better now that I see you. I had to go see Cade and Bradley. I was confused about something, and they helped me clear it up.”

  “You were confused? About what?”

“I didn’t know if I was gay or not, and I didn’t want us to go any farther if I’m not. I didn’t want to hurt you.”

“So, what did you figure out?”

“They decided since I want a relationship with you that I’m gay. I kind of thought so, but I wanted to make sure before I asked you to get into a more serious relationship with me. I know now that’s what I want if you want it too.”

“Yes, I do want that. I have always wanted to have someone that I could move into the future. You know marry and adopt kids with. Is that what you’re talking about getting into with me?”

Link looked into Alex’s eyes and smiled. “That’s exactly what I’m asking for. I really like you a lot and want to see where this is going to go for us. So, if you’re agreeable, then we start tonight with getting closer.”

Alex looked down at his hands and didn’t say anything.

Link watched him for a few minutes and asked, “Is there something wrong, Alex?”

“Not really, I just never had sex before,
and I’m not sure what to do.”

“Me either, but that’s not what I’m talking about getting closer. I just meant to be boyfriends and hold hands things like that. I don’t want sex right now. I just want to get closer to you and get to know you better.”

Alex smiled. “That’s what I want too. I thought you were experienced and then wouldn’t want me because I don’t know anything about it.”

“That’s not going to happen, Alex. I think we’ll learn as we go and don’t have to worry about it now. Let’s just be together, and when it’s time, we’ll know it.”

Alex slid over next to Link and put the center seat belt on. He laid his hand on Link’s thigh. He smiled. Link smiled back at him, then drove to the restaurant where they were going to have dinner. They had decided since both were men, they would pay for their own meals. It worked great for both of them. Link didn’t have a lot of money, but he had enough to have dinner and a movie.

When they got to the restaurant, Link got out first and pulled Alex out of the driver’s side and shut the door. He locked the truck and grabbed Alex’s hand, and they went inside. It wasn’t fancy and mostly just a BBQ place, but both of them loved BBQ, so it was a pleasant place for them.

They walked in and sat at a table. The waitress came over and smiled at Link. “What can I get you to drink, sweetie?”

Link looked at Alex. “What do you want to drink, Honey?”

  “I’ll have a soda, please?”

Link looked back at the waitress. “My boyfriend will have a soda, and I’ll have a cup of coffee.”

The waitress rolled her eyes and turned and left the table. Alex chuckled. “I don’t think she expected me to be your boyfriend. I think she wanted to flirt with you.”

“I don’t care if she did want to flirt. I am with you, and anyway, we just settled it that I’m gay, so not interested in her. I don’t like a pushy person anyway.”

“What are you having? I think I want the ribs with a baked potato and the baked beans. Those beans are so good. I don’t know what they do to them, but they sure taste good.”

“Sounds like a plan to me, babe. I think I’ll have the same. That sounds really good. Do you want to order to keep her from staring at me?”

“Sure. I don’t think that’s going to help, but I’ll sure do it.”

A few minutes later, the waitress brought their drinks. She smiled at Link. “Are you ready to order Sweetie?”

Alex winked at Link. “Yes, we are. We want the ribs with baked potato and the baked beans. Link, do you want the salad bar?”

Link smiled at Alex. “Yes, babe, that sounds good too. Order that for both of us as well.”

Alex smiled back at Link. “We’ll also have a salad bar. Separate checks, please.”

The waitress glanced at Link, but he was watching Alex. He reached his hand over to Alex and took his hand in his. The waitress rolled her eyes and went to the kitchen to put their order in.

Link was hoping that she finally got the hint that he wasn’t interested in her. He just wanted to get his food and spend time with Alex. “I thought maybe we could go to a movie after we have dinner. Is that something you would like to do, Alex?”

“Yeah, I like movies. What’s playing?”

“I don’t know. We can go by the theater after we eat and see what’s playing. What kind of movies do you like?”

“Mostly action movies. I wonder if that new Fast and Furious movie is playing. I have wanted to see that.”

“Yeah, I heard that’s a good movie. We’ll see if it’s playing. I have bought all those movies. I love them.”

The waitress brought their salad dishes over and put them on the table and spun around and left the area. Link and Alex went to the salad bar and loaded up their plates.

They sat back down and ate as they talked about the future.

  Chapter 2

After Link and Alex finished eating, they paid their bill and left to go to the movies. Neither one of the boys left a tip for the waitress because of her being so rude. When they got to the theater, they were thrilled that Hobbs and Shaw were playing. They got their tickets and went inside. Alex got them both popcorn, and Link got them both drinks. They found the theater the show was playing at and went inside and sat down toward the top of the chairs. They wanted to be back far enough to see the movie and also to kiss if they felt like it.

Alex set the popcorn in Link’s lap, and Link set the drinks in the cupholders. They watched all the previews. Then the movie started. They were paying attention to the film when someone tapped Link on the shoulder. He turned to look, and it was a girl he dated a few times in high school. He smiled and said hi, then turned back to the movie.

A few minutes later, she tapped him on the shoulder. “How have you been, Link?”

Annoyed, he turned to look at her. “I’m fine, but I would really like to see this movie. Alex and I have wanted to see it.”

“Oh, I see. What have you been doing with yourself since you have been out of school?”

Link sighed. “I’m trying to watch the movie Darlene. Please be quiet. I don’t want to talk; I want to see the movie.”

She got up and moved down in front of Link. He shook his head and put his arm around Alex and pulled him close to him. He kissed the side of his head while Darlene was watching. Her eyes got big, and she turned around in her seat. He grinned at Alex, and Alex nodded.

A few minutes later, Darlene got up and left the movie theater. Alex leaned over toward Link. “Babe, I think you broke her heart.”

“I don’t know why. We only dated a couple of times. I didn’t even kiss her. She really turned me off with her pushy ways.”

Alex said, “Remind me not to be pushy.”

Link glanced over at him. “You could get away with it, babe.”

Alex shook his head. “Not even going to take the chance. I sure don’t want to mess this up with you.”

Link stared at Alex for a few minutes and then turned back to the movie. “We’re going to go park somewhere and have a long talk. I don’t want ground rules between us.”

Alex glanced at him and turned back to the movie as well.

When the movie was over, Link got Alex’s hand, and they walked out to the truck. Link let Alex get in first, and then he got in and started the truck. He drove to a closed store and parked in a dark corner. Link turned to Alex and took both his hands into his. “This isn’t an ideal place to talk since it is so dark here, but I want you to understand a few things. I want you to be yourself. Pushing me is not going to stop me from being with you. I want you, Alex, and I don’t like pushy women. I know you enough to know that you’re not a woman, so problem solved. Just be yourself, and we’ll get along great.”

“What would cause you to break up with me? I want to know so I can avoid that.”

“Cheat on me, and we are done. No second chances. I don’t want to wander all the time where you are and what you’re doing. Other than that, we can work through it.”

“That’s not a problem then. I don’t believe in cheating. I would never do that to you or anyone else.”

“Then we won’t have any problems. I would never cheat either.”

“Link, have you told your parents about me?”

“No, not yet. I still have to come out to them, then I will. Then I want to take you to meet them. They are really going to love you. They do Bradley. They think he’s perfect for Cade. They’ll think the same about you for me.”

“I told my dad about you. He hates that I’m gay, so he wasn’t really impressed. I wish he would just let me be me.”

“I know, babe. I wish he would too. I hate that he treats you so bad. Just like that crap that he pulled for your college. He told you he wanted one thing, but actually, he just wanted to control your life. I’ll let you be you.”

Alex chuckled. “Thanks for that, Link.”

A police car with its lights on pulled up behind them. Neither of the boys moved. The police officer came up t
o Link’s window. It was down, and he leaned into the cab of the truck. “What are you boys doing here in the dark?”

“We were just talking. Is everything all right?”

“Yeah, just saw your truck sitting here and wanted to make sure you didn’t have an underage girl in here.”

“Nope, we’re both over twenty-one. We were just talking. Nothing bad at all.”

“You might want to move along. The next officer that stops here might not be as nice as me.”

Link nodded and started his truck and waited for the officer to move his car then drove toward Alex’s apartment.

When they get to the apartment, Link pulled Alex into his arms and kissed him with all the passion he had in him. Alex pulled back after the kiss and stared into Link’s eyes. “Do you want to come in?”

“No, I think I better go home. I don’t think I could control myself around you right now. I think it would be better for both of us if I just go home.”

Alex smiled. “Yeah, that would probably be best.” He gave Link another kiss and then got out of the truck and walked up to his door. He looked back at Link and gave a little wave and then went inside. Link sat there a few more minutes, trying to decide to go home or go into the apartment. He decided to go back and go to bed. He would see Alex in the morning. They had plans to go see Cade and Bradley and ask if they could help with the moving.

The next morning Link was at Alex’s apartment bright and early. They didn’t have plans until later, but he missed Alex and wanted to see him. He walked up to the door and knocked. It was a few minutes later that a sleepy Alex opened the door. Evidently, he was still asleep when Link knocked. Link smiled at his bedhead and ruffled his hair. Alex frowned. “You just did that, didn’t you?”

Link laughed. “Yes, I did. Wake up, babe. We have plans today, remember?”

“Yeah, but I thought it was later. Come on in. I’ll make some coffee.”
