  Petras

Capital city of Rethwellan. (Oath, Storm, Sword, Winds)

  Phellip

Having survived a colddrake attack, he was worried about further trouble, based on previous experience. Vanyel could hardly blame him. (LHM)

  Pheregrul

Kethry’s family name; the Pheregruls were members of the Fifty Noble Houses of Mornedealth. By her father’s day, the name was an empty title. The House estates had dwindled to a decaying mansion in the Old City and the family perks to little more than an open invitation to Court functions and permission to hunt in the Royal Forests. (Oath)

  Phoenix

A Haighlei legend of an Air-Spirit and Fire-Spirit combined. The legend became the basis for a classic dance performed at the Palace called, “Phoenix Dancing with Dragon”. (Gryphon)

  Phryny

  Piel

Shandi’s most romantic and least sensible suitor. After Shandi was Chosen, he mooned about brokenheartedly, making a pest of himself. In his foolish posturing and fantasizing, he stood out in the rain until he caught cold and then expected Keisha to cure his ills. (Owl)

  Pig and Potion

A tavern in Carter’s Lane in Petras, it offered good food, fine drink, and various forms of accommodations. The inn was especially noted for its excellent brewmaster. (Oath)

  Pig and Stick

A tavern in Highjorune in Lineas where Minstrel Renfry worked. Vanyel, in his disguise as Valdir, had looked there in hopes of getting a job, but Renfry’s presence chased him off. Later, the two men struck up an acquaintance and Renfry was surprisingly helpful and sympathetic to the threadbare character Vanyel was portraying. When Vanyel fled Highjorune, he went to The Pig and Stick looking for the older man. Renfry tipped him off on how to escape the city, and coaxed the taverns cook into supplying the Herald-Mage with food for his journey. (LHM)

  Pillars of Wisdom

They stand at either side of the gates between this world and the world of the Dead, invoked during the death-curse ritual against an Oathbreaker. Formed of ethereal glowing mist, and bracketing the Gate of Judgment, the Pillars allow those wronged by the Oathbreaker to return long enough to find just revenge. (Oath)

  Pine forest

The only name given to a location on the Guard’s maps, a heavily wooded area east of White Foal Pass near the Karse border that Lord Marshal Weldon speculated was the place where the Karsites would try to flank Valdemar’s army and press forward their invasion. He assigned Lan to hold off the attack there, using whatever means necessary to stop the Karsites. (BB)

The daughter of his Companion Satiran, Kalira, became Lavan’s Companion. Fortyish, of medium height, Pol possessed a little bit of every Heraldic Gift, in a weak yet active form. This made him extremely valuable in teaching new trainees until they were ready to work with a herald mentor who would develop their Gifts. Pol befriended and taught Lavan Chitward all he knew about being a responsible herald. Lavan never wanted to use his Firestarting Gift on a human until Pol was attacked and blinded by a Karsite assassin. After the Karsite army was burned to ash along with Lavan, Pol accompanied Elenor and a few of Lavan’s friends to the spot where Lavan was killed and nurtured a firecone tree there in memory of the Herald.   Portal

A Mage Gate created by the internal energy of a powerful Adept. It must be constructed by only one person, and is entirely dependent upon him or her to erect both entrance and exit, as no two people see the same place in exactly the same way, and building a portal is a precise weaving of magic, though others can feed the gate-builder power. (BV)

One of Falconsbane’s mages who was sacrificed to acquire the power-pole. (Winds)

  Preatur (Lord)

Father of an uncommonly bautiful and seductive daughter whose presence wreaked havoc among Valdemar’s Guard at Court. King Randale issued orders, via Herald-Mage Vanyel, for Preatur to either marry off his daughter or take her home, else the Crown would find a husband for her. (LHM)

Like harmonics of a note, a mage will have a variety of stones that suit his or her personal vibrations. The stone that most closely matches is ranked as the primary, followed by the secondary, and so on. The most effective prime-focus stone should be large and flawless. Often a mage will be able to work better with a large clear secondary stone than a smaller or flawed primary focus stone. Herald-Mage Vanyel had always worked with a secondary focus stone until Stefen gave him a large flawless piece of amber, the Herald-Mage’s preferred prime-focus stone. (LHM)
