My phone rings suddenly. Silas grabs it off the table and answers it on speaker. “What do you want Brooklyn?” he says.
“Mufucka, who you talking to like that?” she says, laughing. “Where’s my sister?”
“I’m right here. Hi.”
“Stop letting your man answer your phone, like he’s running shit around there.”
“She’s got me there. I’m not. Here,” he hands me my phone, then rests his chin on my shoulder. I take the call off speaker and wrap my fingers with his as they slide over my belly.
“Hey, girl. What’s up?”

Acknowledgments
Parts of this book were made possible by A and the folks at Mom’s Country Orchards. Thank you so much for letting me come by to ask a million questions and sample all the jam and honey we could handle.
Thank you to my amazing family who has continued to support me every step of the way.
Thank you to Karen and Georgia of My Favorite Murder who have continued to fuel my love for true crime now that Dateline and 48 Hours are rehashing crimes they’ve already covered, sometimes twice.
A special thank you to the ladies at The Ripped Bodice Bookstore (and Fitz) for the free wifi, the weeping circle, the frank conversation about bodily functions, racial injustice, and why Rachel should have never picked Bryan.
Sarah, once again, the best deadline buddy, ever!
Janet, Alyssa, Leah, Courtney, Bea, Alisha, and Bree for keeping me going each and everyday.
And lastly my editor, Tara. For real, we are NEVER doing this again.
