Nudging the soft cotton aside, he moved his mouth lower. His hands cupped her breasts, bare now except for the sheer fabric of her bra. Desire found every female part of her body and set her on fire. She couldn’t catch her breath.
He slid his fingers beneath her bra and found tender flesh and nipples grown agonizingly sensitive since their first kiss. He lowered her onto the couch and pressed one thigh between her legs as he worked magic on her mouth, her neck, her breasts, her mind.
She arched against him, needing more. But they couldn’t. Somehow she managed to catch her breath long enough to remind him. “Debra.”
He lowered his head to her breast and pulled her nipple into his mouth, scorching her.
“Debra,” she gasped again, wishing she could make him understand. She wanted everything he was doing and much, much more, but they couldn’t risk this. “Mason, we can’t—”
“Debra’s spending the night with Ike and Barbara,” he said with a smile that made her shiver.
“She’s gone.”
“All night.” He kissed her again, quickly. “Alex called last night. She’s going to have another baby, and Debra has decided to live with me forever.”
“Is she serious?”
“For today.” Mason grinned and nuzzled her earlobe. “I think she and I are going to be okay, too. Which just leaves us.”
Jolene slid her hands beneath Mason’s soft, faded T-shirt and traced the muscles in his back with her fingertips. She moved her hands to his chest and slid them slowly down to his belt buckle. “Us?”
To her surprise, he stopped her before she could unfasten his belt. “What do you think?” he asked, sliding his arms around her waist. “Do the two of us stand a chance?”
“I can’t cook.”
“I can’t work a set of handcuffs.”
She laughed and leaned her cheek against his chest. “It’s never going to be just the two of us, Mason. It’s going to be your family and mine, Debra and my career…”
“I can handle it, can you?”
She pulled away so she could see him. “I’d sure like to try.”
As he bent to kiss her again, Jolene thought about how a life with Mason would be filled with steel-toed boots and meat loaf, homework and handcuffs. Just the way she wanted it.
