The final bell rings loudly. There are notebooks and trash all over the floor where kids have cleaned out their lockers and couldn’t fit stuff into the overflowing wastebaskets. All the signs and posters have been pulled down in the hallways, exposing bare walls painted an institutional green. Locker doors are hanging open, and someone dumped an algebra book in the water fountain. A “Goodbye Mrs. York” sign has fallen halfway off her classroom door, and someone walks by and rips it the rest of the way off.
I wave goodbye to Emma and Kevin as they walk out of school arm-in-arm. Ashleigh calls across the hallway to me, saying she’ll see me next fall. Janae runs down the middle of the hall high-fiving kids and shouting to everyone that summer is finally here. Megan and Jeremy are in a rush to leave, so she breathlessly reminds me that I’m invited to her sister’s wedding in a couple of weeks, like I could forget. And then Quince appears by my side.
“Ready to go?” he asks, grinning at me.
“You bet.”
I have one last look around, take Quince’s offered hand, and we walk out the door together.
I feel like a pretty normal kid.
