They’d pulled into port for supplies the day before, and hopefully, he’d be able to get back in the water again soon.
A heavy hand dropped on his shoulder. “Hey there, River. You’ve kept yourself scarce while we were docked.”
River turned and smiled at Captain George Stanhope. “I went to get a few personal supplies.”
“Of course. I wanted to ask a favor of you.”
“Anything, Captain.”
“We brought a new cook on board since Jackson quit on us. Think you could show her around?”
“Her?” River asked, surprised. This was a tough gig and the only woman on board was the Captain’s wife who served as their nurse and navigator.
“Yeah. She a pretty thing, and I don’t want the others bothering her. I was hesitant, but it didn’t take long to see she’s tough.”
“Where is she?” River asked, some strange feeling tickling at his mind.
“In her bunk.”
River spun away, not waiting to ask any more questions. He went to the bunk that used to be Jackson’s and flung open the door. His eyes fixed on red hair wound up in a bun. “No way,” he said.
The girl turned and smiled. “Hey there, Tributary.”
“Narissa,” he whispered, his brain barely functioning.
“Think you could handle working with me again?”
River didn’t answer, just kicked the door shut behind him and strode forward, sweeping her into his arms. There would be time for questions later. For now, there was nothing but her lips and his moving together in a greeting that needed no words.
