Jamie sucked down the last of the tart liquid in her glass, feeling only mildly better now that her head was swimming a bit.
“You think it’s our guy?” Nikon said.
Lucan nodded. “Has to be.”
Jamie frowned. “Your guy? You know who did this?”
Lucan turned to look at her, and she wished more than anything that she could see his eyes instead of the sunglasses.
“We’ve got another lead on the person who did the bombing.”
The gears in her brain cranked slowly. “Do you think they were planning on blowing us up?”
She could see Nikon tense as Leah shivered in her seat over the careless words. Lucan placed a hand on Jamie’s thigh, and she turned back to him.
“No, but I think we need to go back to where this all happened,” Lucan said.
“No,” Leah whispered.
Jamie reached out for her friend. “You don’t have to,” she whispered.
“Nikon will take Leah home while you and I go check out where this happened,” Lucan said.
The two men exchanged looks, but she couldn’t make heads or tails of it all. Maybe it was some sort of hybrid bro code or something.
“We have to figure this out, which means we need to investigate,” Lucan said. “We’re two towns over from Luna Lodge. I doubt they are randomly mind-controlling people who just happen to go after people who know hybrids.”
Jamie suppressed a shiver, not liking the idea that the bad guys were maybe watching her.
She nodded and reached for her purse but only then realized that the spandex pants she was wearing only had room for her key and her phone.
To her relief, Lucan place some bills on the table and held out a hand to help her up.
Their hands touched, and she found she didn’t want to let go. She wanted to continue holding him until he told her she couldn’t anymore.
When they’d reached the door, Jamie turned to Leah. She gave her a quick hug.
“Stay with Nikon,” she whispered. “He’ll keep you safe until you get back to your place.”
Leah nodded, but her body shook. Jamie wondered if it was from what had happened or what might come when she went home.
Jamie turned back to Lucan and slipped her hand back into his. He seemed surprised but didn’t let go. A warm jolt shot through her.
“Okay, let’s go find this dick,” Lucan said.
Chapter Nine
They had already walked a block, and Lucan couldn’t figure out why he was holding her hand. There wasn’t really a reason. They weren’t a couple.
No matter how many times he said it in his head, that truth didn’t seem to want to stick with her hot little fingers in his.
Jamie sighed and leaned into him a little. “You smell good,” she mumbled.
He could smell the alcohol on her and knew she was more than a little plastered from it.
“Are we close?” Lucan said.
Jamie looked around and stopped. She pointed a bit down the road. “There. That’s where she grabbed me.”
She glanced at her arm, and he could see purple marks forming there. Anger jolted through him. Even if the woman hadn’t known what she was doing, she hurt his woman.
Lucan frowned.
His woman?
He’d thought it, and it just sounded right in his head. His inner beast had howled all night long about his woman, and he was starting to believe it.
Lucan cleared all the thoughts from his head as he took in a deep breath. It was time to use some of his hybrid advantages to help track down their enemy. He sniffed, looking for any odd scents.
Nothing.
“Let me see,” he said.
He leaned down to Jamie and pulled her close, her arm near his head. Maybe he’d be able to pick of the scent there and catch it on something else.
Despite himself, he couldn’t help but get a bit excited at her quick inhale of breath. It was hard enough to concentrate with her Vestal scent infusing his nostrils.
“What are you doing?” Jamie said.
“Just relax while I try and get the scent on you,” he growled.
Jamie stilled in his arms as he breathed in deeply.
Just there, past the distracting lavender, was something. Not really strong enough, though. He pressed his nose against her soft skin and felt the skin pebble as he did.
A small shiver came from the woman. He stopped what he was doing to stare at her.
Her mouth was slightly open and eyes half closed. She looked like she was half near orgasm, and damned if she wasn’t the hottest thing he’d ever seen.
Lucan cursed under his breath as his cock swelled in response. He was pressed so closely to her she must have felt it instantly. She shifted.
He sucked in a breath, trying not to groan. He ignored the urge to rub against her, and instead went back to smelling her arm.
The enemy was close, and he needed to keep his focus before Jamie or anyone else got hurt.
There was something there on her arm, but it just wasn’t enough.
“I’m getting nothing,” Lucan said.
He let her go, but she kept a hand on his arm.
“Maybe I should get you back to your place,” he said after a moment.
Jamie nodded, and he was surprised when a soft blush spread across her cheeks.
Lucan turned away from her as they walked back to his bike.
All he had to do was drop her off. Well, let her ride on the back of his bike and cling to him in all the wrong ways. Then drop her off before he convinced himself that he needed to stay to keep an eye on her.
Lucan cursed under his breath.
Simple, right?
* * *
Jamie pressed her face into Lucan’s back and closed her eyes. She loved the warmth of him as they drove through town. His helmet smelled like him, which only enhanced the pleasure of the low rumble of the bike between her legs.
The fear from earlier had passed. His presence always felt like a protective blanket that would shield her from harm. There was just something about Lucan that made her feel like everything was going to be fine as long as he was there with her.
When they stopped outside her apartment, she opened her eyes to look around.
“That’s weird,” Lucan said.
Jamie climbed off and handed him the helmet. “What?”
He pointed to a black car. “Looks like Nikon is still here.”
For a moment, he looked like he wanted to get back on his bike and take off. She twisted her hands and tried to think of a reason for Lucan to stay, but nothing came to mind.
It wasn’t exactly like she could tell him she wanted him to come upstairs so he could fuck her brains out.
Lucan sighed. “I should check to make sure everything is fine.”
Jamie frowned. “You don’t think the woman followed them here, do you?”
Lucan shook his head. “Likely not. She’d have a hard time getting the drop on Nikon, but just want to be sure.”
Jamie wanted to be happy he was coming upstairs, but worry still ate at her. Maybe he was wrong. Maybe the woman had found them. Maybe she was waiting for her to get there with more people.
They reached the top of the stairs and stopped outside the door to Leah’s apartment. Lucan raised his brows in surprise then shook his head.
“They’re fine,” he said.
Jamie opened her own door and looked to where he stood behind her. “How do you know?”
He shrugged. “I can hear them.”
Her eyes widened with surprise. “Are they…?” Her cheeks heated.
Lucan shook his head. “Sleeping,” he said quietly. “I don’t think Nikon has slept much since…”
He trailed off, and she understood. Leah had lost someone she was attracted to, but Nikon had lost his family.
Jamie nodded to her apartment. Lucan paused for a moment and then stepped inside.
“Leah, too,” she said as she entered.
Jamie ki
cked off her shoes before walking over to the fridge and pulling out two beers. She handed one to Lucan who took the open beverage.
“She told me today that’s she’s trying to be stronger,” she said. She sighed and sat on the couch. “That was before that woman.”
Lucan sat beside her. Jamie was keenly aware on how close they were to their position from the night before.
“She’s not doing well?” he said.
“Even though she and Alair had just started something—” Jamie took a long drink and then shook her head. “—It was just too much. I don’t think she’s ever lost anyone like that.
Lucan raised a brow. “And you have?”
She shrugged. “Sure,” she said. “Lots of people lose people they care for. Lost my mom before I could even open my eyes to a blood clot. And then my dad to a heart attack three years ago.”
“I’m sorry,” he mumbled.
Jamie shook her head and took another drink. “Don’t be,” She smiled. “I moved on. Doesn’t mean I didn’t love them, but the living have to keep on living. It’s our duty to those that can’t be here.”
She looked over at him and was surprised to find the big man staring intently at her.
“I’ve never met anyone like you,” he said quietly. “Every part of you is so full of life. I thought maybe you’d never had anything bad happen to you, but that’s not it at all. You’re just… you.”
Jamie sat their stunned. She wasn’t really sure what to say in response. It wasn’t exactly poetry, but what he said touched her in the same way. Her heart fluttered the more she stared at him.
She reached up and placed a hand on his cheek. “And you’re you. That’s what makes you so special.”
Jamie slowly moved in for a kiss. This time she wanted him to think about it. To know she was going to kiss him and give him time to say no.
It wasn’t just about sex anymore, although she really hoped it ended with that. This time it was about the heart, and her heart was full of feeling for him.
If they started this, she wasn’t going to be able to just shut it off like she had with other men. This time it was for real, and she wanted something long term.
Their lips touched, and she sighed as she pressed into him, his mouth moving slowly against hers. Each of them tasted and relished the other.
After a moment, she stood and looked down at his glowing yellow eyes. She pulled her shirt and bra over her head and leaned over to pull her pants to the floor. When she kicked them off, she stepped over to where he was on the couch, her movements slow and deliberate.
“I want you to stay with me,” she said quietly. “I want you to make love to me.”
He was quiet for a moment, and she worried that it was too much. That she’d used the wrong words, but they were the ones in her heart, and she didn’t know if she had any other to say.
A low rumble filled the room just before he shot off the couch and lifted her into his arms.
“You’re mine tonight.”
Chapter Ten
Lucan carried the naked Jamie into the bedroom and slammed the door shut with his foot. He dropped her on the bed and watched as she stared up at him with lust in her eyes.
Light filtered in from the curtain, and he knew she could see the feral look on his face as he ripped the clothes from his body and tossed them on the floor.
Lucan wanted this. For that moment, he didn’t care about anything else: mind control, the Horatius Group, or even the other hybrids. His Vestal was the only person filling his thoughts.
They had been destined to be with one another since the first moment he held her in his arms. She was his. The thought had been hammered into his head each day since.
Jamie stared at his thick cock as it jutted out toward her. He watched as she licked her lips and groaned as he remembered that sweet tongue on him the day before.
She sat up and swiped a bit of cum just on the tip. He clenched his fists to keep from thrusting inside her warm mouth.
“Lay down,” he growled.
Jamie smiled at him and sprawled out on the bed, her beautiful body on full display.
He’d missed that last night. The chance to see her naked. It had been something he’d thought about often since. What she would look like. How she would feel.
Lucan placed himself between her spread legs and stared at the wet thatch of hair there. His inner beast wanted to thrust into her already, but he resisted. Not quite yet.
The last time he’d been the one who’d received all the pleasure. He wanted to make sure she was satisfied before worrying about himself.
He slid a finger over her opening, making sure to press against the little bud there.
Jamie bucked her hips against his hand but continued to stare at him as he teased her pussy.
“Tell me what you want,” Lucan said.
This time it was his turn to be in control, and he planned on enjoying it a bit.
“Your finger,” she panted.
His finger moved a little fast over her. She groaned in response.
“Like this?” Lucan cocked a brow. He wanted to hear her say it.
“Inside me,” she said as she stared at him. “I want it inside me.”
He rewarded her by plunging into her. Her warm insides gripped him, and his cock twitched.
“Shit,” he grunted.
Jamie bucked wildly against him, using his finger to fuck herself.
As much as she thrust, it just wasn’t enough. He could see it written clearly on her face. Jamie wanted more.
So did he.
“Please,” she whispered.
Lucan raised a brow. “Please?”
She sighed loudly. “Would you just fuck me? I’ve been waiting all day for it.”
Jamie clamped a hand over her mouth. She hadn’t meant to say it like that, but all the teasing was driving her insane.
She wanted him to be inside her. Wanted him to fuck her until she screamed.
Much to her surprise, Lucan chuckled.
“All day?” he murmured as he leaned his powerful body over her.
Jamie took in a shuttered breath. “Yes.”
She loved the smile he gave her. It was like he might eat hear alive, and she was certain she would enjoy it the whole time.
Lucan pressed his body into hers. His cock slid between her folds, but he didn’t enter yet.
She stared at him as he shifted his hips, moving the length over her clit.
“Oh shit,” she whispered, her toes curling.
Her hands tightened against his shoulders.
“You like that?” he growled.
Jamie stared at his glowing eyes. Something about the way he was mocking her only made her want to teach him a lesson.
She sat up and pressed her mouth to his. Lucan, being who he was, took control over the kiss.
With ease, she shifted her hips and nudged the head at her opening.
Lucan pulled back to stare down at her. “Are you sure?”
She smiled sweetly up at him. “Shut up and fuck me.”
Like she’d hoped, her words sparked something in him.
The hybrid pressed into her, filling her with his cock, her insides stretching.
Jamie gasped at the size. Last night her mind hadn’t been playing tricks on her. Lucan was huge.
She panted. The more he pressed, the louder her panting grew. He stretched her to her limit. Never had she been so filled by someone.
He stopped and stared down at her. “If I’m too… big, maybe we should stop.”
Jamie frowned. Like hell they were stopping. She wanted this, and by God, she’d have him.
Her legs wrapped around the back of him as she pulled hard. His strong body didn’t budge, but it didn’t have to. Her hips moved easily as she slid him deep inside her.
The low growl that came from him helped eased the pain caused by his girth. The sensation tickled her clit and made her eyes roll into the back of her head.
“You’re killi
ng me here,” he huffed. “I’ve got to move.”
Jamie shifted her hips, moving him around in her until his hands came tight at her hips. She reached up and placed a soft kiss against his lips.
“Move,” she whispered. “I want to feel you inside me.”
The large man shuddered inside her before he started moving his hips.
Each thrust pushed him deeper inside. Jamie moaned loudly, just enjoying the feeling of him.
Her hand gripped his tight ass as he grew faster, her nails biting into the flesh there.
“Fuck,” he hissed.
Lucan pressed fully inside her, but it still wasn’t enough. She wanted more but wasn’t sure what. Having him fill her just wasn’t enough.
Suddenly, Lucan sat up on his knees and pulled her hips with him. His hands on her ass, he lifted her so he had better access.
He slammed into her, pressing against her cervix each time, making her shudder and quake with each movement.
“Yes,” she whispered between pants.
Her soft words only spurred him on. Lucan pounded into her now, pushing himself deeper and deeper inside her.
After a moment of Lucan grinding inside her deepest spot, she came hard. Her insides squeezed him in a way that she didn’t even know she could.
Another thrust, and Jamie could feel him empty himself inside her. Hot cum seeped outside of her as she milked the rest.
After a moment Lucan rolled them until she sat on top, his cock still deep inside her.
Jamie started to slide off when he stopped her.
“I want to be in you all night,” he said, and grunted.
She raised a brow. “All night? Think you got it in you, big boy?”
Inside her, she could feel him already starting to expand again.
“I think I can do that.” He winked.
She was in for the best night of her life.
Chapter Eleven
Lucan carefully climbed out of bed, smiling down at the sleeping Jamie. The previous night had been everything he’d ever wanted, more really. That didn’t change the harsh reality of his life and mission.
