Four broken squares glinted in the light.
Eva frowned. ‘What are those?’
‘The memory chips from the computers at Maxim’s headquarters. They contain all the information to replicate and distribute the smallpox,’ replied Nathan, his breath fogging in the night air. ‘Once we got you on a repatriation flight to the UK for treatment, Decker went back to what was left of the bunker and managed to retrieve them for me.’
‘What are you going to do with them?’
‘This.’ He held his arm out, then turned his palm and let the pieces of metal fall into the raging Thames River below.
Eva watched the last remnants disappear under the water’s surface, then turned to Nathan.
‘They’ve taken samples from my blood and the twins’ antibodies, haven’t they?’
‘They had to, Eva. Don’t worry – they’re secure, at Porton Down. We’re the good guys. You have to believe that.’
‘What about you? What are you going to do now?’
He smiled, and then reached out and cupped her chin in his hand, before kissing her.
She pulled away, and then laughed.
‘You didn’t answer the question.’
His mouth twitched. ‘I heard there was a bookshop for sale in Prague.’
Eva crossed her arms and raised an eyebrow. ‘Did you, now?’
‘Well, someone has to look after the place. I heard the current owner once threatened to burn it down.’
She laughed again.
‘It’s yours,’ she said, then looped her arm through his and led him away from the bridge. ‘But first, you can buy me dinner.’
