“She was here. But she got away,” said Hannah.
“Is that a gun?” he said, staring at the tiny handgun in Hannah’s hand.
“What of it?” asked Hannah waspishly.
“Why do you have a gun?”
“None of your business,” she snapped. “You’re worse than my brother.”
Frankie shook his head as if to clear it, then glanced at Celestine and Sam and frowned. “You guys look terrible. What’re you doing out here?”
Celestine felt hysterical laughter bubbling up in her chest, but it hurt too much to let it out.
At that moment, Joey ran around the edge of a camper and went barreling straight up to Frankie. “She got away. Davos had her holed up near the ticketing booths for a minute or two, but she got away.”
“She didn’t get to any of the children?”
Joey shook his head. “Didn’t have a chance. Not with everyone looking for her.”
Celestine let out a sigh. They’d stopped it. They’d changed the future she’d seen for them all.
She leaned back into Sam’s arms. “Can you take me home now?” she said.
“Always,” said Sam.
Epilogue
Sam wrapped the bandage around Celestine’s shoulder, carefully tying up and tucking the end section. “No moving,” he said sternly. She was sitting in her small kitchen, the morning sun streaming in through the window.
“Yes, sir,” replied Celestine with a silly smile.
He paused in midair. “That wasn’t a demand, was it? One you can’t disagree with?” he asked seriously. It was less than a day after their run-in with Veronica, and they were still trying to figure out their new situation.
All he really knew was that he was enjoying being married to Celestine. He searched her gaze. He hoped she felt the same way.
Celestine put her head to one side. “Everything you say could potentially be an order. But I’ve realised that it’s the intention behind it, the belief you have as you say the words.”
“Meaning?”
“You never want me to just do what you say without agreeing to it. I feel that now. I know it. So even when you are telling me what to do, it’s not an order that I can’t talk to you about. It was never like that with my brothers. They’d been taught by my father that obedience was the only thing to ask for from me.”
Sam sat down on the chair beside her. “I was Veronica’s slave for all those years. I’d never ask anyone to be the same for me.”
“I know that.” Celestine lifted her hand to Sam’s cheek, her soft palm rubbing the rough stubble.
He caught her hand in his, and turned his head so he could plant a kiss on her palm. “I want us to stay married, Celestine,” he whispered.
“I do too,” she said, tears in her eyes.
He leaned in and was about to kiss her, when a sharp knock sounded on the door. He ignored it and touched his lips to hers.
“I know you’re in there, Sam. We have a problem.” It was Garth, in full Giftmaster mode. “Alfie’s dogs have escaped. We need all hands on deck to help him round them up.”
Celestine gasped and put one hand over her mouth. “Oh no, I forgot,” she said.
“Forgot what?” Sam said.
“I saw George, the great Dane, escaping from his kennel in one of my visions. It’s too small for him. I meant to tell Alfie, but with everything that’s been going on…” She put her hand on Sam’s arm. “Tell Alfie what the problem is. He needs to get George a bigger kennel.”
Garth banged on the door again. “Come on, Sam. No more time wasting with your new wife.”
Sam sighed and leaned his forehead against Celestine’s. “There’s always something around here, huh?”
He reluctantly stood up. “Coming, Garth,” he called through the door. He kept Celestine’s hand in his for a moment longer, gazing down into her beautiful violet eyes.
“Promise me you’ll talk to Alfie,” she said.
He nodded. He was also going to have to talk to the Carnival leaders about the hacker he’d seen with Veronica and what she’d said just before she disappeared.
They needed to start making plans and checking all their possible weaknesses. There was a lot to do. This wasn’t over by a long shot.
Celestine smiled. “As long as we have each other, we’ll be fine.”
“I love you,” he whispered.
“I love you, too,” she said.
