by Peter Grant

“I think you’ve thought of everything.” He could hear the excitement in her voice.

“I doubt it’s everything. There are sure to be problems and setbacks; but between the two of us, we’ll overcome them. I think Mr. Grolier’s right. I think Denver City is going to grow over the next few years. If it’s to be the territorial capital, that’s just about guaranteed, even without the mines. If we’re ready for that, our fortunes will rise with the city’s.”

Rose hugged him. “Then let’s start first thing tomorrow morning!”

  THE END

Some of the place names in this book—Leavenworth City, Denver City, and so on—and some of the names of army forts may appear incorrect to modern readers. However, they are historically accurate for the period in which this book is set, 1865-66. The word “City” was dropped from the names of Leavenworth and Denver some time later. The US Army would abandon, rename, rebuild, and build new forts at a frenetic pace across the Old West until the early twentieth century. Similarly, the details provided in this book of weapons, wagons, foodstuffs, cattle drives, railroad construction, corruption in the immediately post-Civil War army, etc. are all historically correct for the period, as are the descriptions of Native American tribes.

The author has chosen not to employ some words or expressions that were in general use at the time, particularly in reference to black people, former slaves, former Confederates, and Native Americans, because at the current time they are regarded as racially or culturally inflammatory, and often elicit strong reactions. Sadly, discretion appears to be the better part of correctness in this day and age, overriding historical accuracy.

Peter Grant was born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa. Between military service, the IT industry and humanitarian involvement, he traveled throughout sub-Saharan Africa before being ordained as a pastor. He later immigrated to the USA, where he worked as a pastor and prison chaplain until an injury forced his retirement. He is now a full-time writer, and married to a pilot from Alaska. They currently live in Texas. Visit him at his blog, Bayou Renaissance Man.
