Just the Essentials Page 20

by Tapscott, Shari L.

A ghost of a smile graces his lips, taking my breath away. “Have you replaced the toilet paper holder yet?”

“It was the first thing to go.”

He chuckles quietly and steps out the front. “I really am glad your back.” He points to the door. “Lock this.”

I roll my eyes, trying to hide how happy I am that some of the tension has lifted. “I will.”

Jack nods one last time and shuts the door behind him. I sink down to the couch, feeling a dozen different emotions.

A knock sounds at the door. When I stand up, I see his measuring tape sits forgotten in the window sill.

The door opens and I say, “You almost left—”

I gasp as Jack pulls me toward him, one of his hands wrapping around my waist and the other twining through my hair.

“You didn’t lock the door,” he whispers, his lips a breath away from mine.

My eyes search his, trying to convey everything—how sorry I am, how much I love him.

“I was hoping you’d come back,” I breathe.

He makes a low sound in the back of his throat and draws me closer.

Here, in the mountain sunshine, standing on the porch he fixed, Jack kisses me. And it’s spectacular.
