“You’ve got me.” He admitted facetiously, putting his arms around her. “Being looked after by such a wonderful woman… what’s not to love?” he laughed, leaning in to kiss her lightly. Alice settled into his embrace resting her head on his shoulder. “Your red hair’s coming back through,” he told her, running his fingers through the hair that Alice was allowing to grow out, now that she no longer needed to hide. She had told him a great deal about her life, the traceable details that had felt too dangerous to reveal before. She had shown him photos of her home and her family and herself from before as well. He had been surprised to see the shock of red curls that Alice had loved before, but he was sure that he would grow to love them too, if he was to be given that chance. “So what are you going to do now?” he asked quietly. It was a question that had been weighing on his mind ever since Gorman had been taken in to custody. He was going to be extradited to Australia, and charged with Alice’s attempted murder. The case against him was solid and it looked as though Alice would be free to resume the life she had left behind in Australia, if that was what she wanted. Feeling her wrapped tightly in his arms he had to admit that there was nothing that he wanted less. Alice smiled sadly. It was a tough choice to make. The new life that she had grown to love or the old life that had been so painfully ripped from her. She breathed deeply taking in the smell of betadine and soap, the sound of his breathing and the feel of his heartbeat. She held him a little tighter. “I’m not going anywhere.” She said softly and smiled, feeling him relax. He pulled away from her and smoothed her hair back from her forehead. He rested his forehead against hers, looking into her large brown eyes, shining with contentedness and affection. “I’m really glad.” He said earnestly and leaned in to kiss her, long and slow, oblivious to anything except the two of them, while the evening chill settled in and the world rushed by outside.
