Dagger of the Assassins Page 19

by Cat Wilder

"Veronica! Come with us," I commanded. "You have to tell all of your Sisters of the Sacred Death that the Order isn't hunting us any longer. Tell them we are free to go."

  "You're going to leave me?"

"I have to," I said. "But I need you to say here and protect me from your Order, and any others you learn are trying to do us harm."

She looked confused, distraught for a moment, and then nodded. "Yes. I will protect you, my love."

Slipping out of bed, Veronica stood tall, back bowed, and gave me a sensuous, come-hither look. I shook my head, giving her a disapproving look. The Abbess frowned, and with a wave of the hand tight black leather sheathed her body.

I had to avert my eyes, because… Damn! I did love how a curvy woman looked in tight black leather. All shiny. Every curve of her spectacular body accentuated. Like the regular Sacred Death assassins, she wore a catsuit with an under-boob corset cinching her waist tight. Only, she upped the ante with stiletto-heeled thigh boots.

  Can she read my mind?

Even Elky did a double-take. And a triple-take on the boots. Then she looked at me.

"Don't even think about it," the Amazon said. "I'd break both my ankles."

I chose not to comment. Anything I said would be used against me over and over. I'm not as dumb as I look. Instead, I headed for the door. Elky waited for Veronica to follow me out before she took the rear.

It was hard to ignore Veronica's boots going down the stone stairs. Those tall stilettos clacked loudly in the enclosed space. I may have begun regretting my refusal to have sex with her.

A dragon's roar echoed up the stairs.

"Tahki is still alive!" I cried, joy filling my heart.

"I bet Kahlan saved her," Elky said.

I took off running, taking the steps two and three at a time. That wasn't easy, since it was a defensive keep and built like a real castle, so the steps were intentionally uneven to trip up invaders and slow them down. I almost fell a few times before I reached the ground floor.

That's when I realized I had left the two women far behind. Veronica and her heels had to be the hold up, because Elky could keep up with me easily. Instead of going back for them, or waiting, I rushed to the Great Hall's huge double doors.

Kahlan stood in the middle of the vast chamber, alone. Tahki had a small group of assassins and trainees backed into the far corner. I didn't see Meike. I paused. Something was wrong. Then I realized the dragon wasn't Tahki. The beast was the wrong shade of red. Tahki was a dark blood red, but that dragon was more scarlet.

"Cormac! Thank the goddess you're back."

The healer rushed over to me and threw herself in my arms, kissing me.

"Are you alright?" I asked. "Where's Meike?" I looked at a huge pool of blood where I last saw Tahki. "Where is Tahki?"

Kahlan pointed at the strange dragon. "Right there."

  "That's Tahki? She changed color?"

"That's… Um, both Meike and Tahki combined," Kahlan said. "As Tahki died, I felt her merge with Meike. I think Meike's a dragon-shifter now."

Shit was happening too fast. What did that mean? How did one become a dragon-shifter just like that? Did she become Meike in elfmaid form, and turned into Tahki as a dragon? Dual personalities?

Elky and Veronica arrived, with the Amazon looking highly agitated. The Amazon glared at me, hand tight on the brunette's arm. Veronica looked miffed, but then looked past us to the dragon-assassin confrontation.

"Cormac, please call your dragon off my Sisters," Veronica asked.

  Kahlan's jaw dropped. "Did you…"

"I did not bang her, if that's what you're asking," I said. "But she's on our side now."

"He hates her because she killed Tahki," Elky said.

"I said I'm sorry about the stupid dragon," Veronica said, and then pointed at the dragon across the hall. "And there she is, looking perfectly fine and scary."

"Tahki looks different," Elky said. "Where's Meike?"

Kahlan and I shared an exasperated look.

"Meike and Tahki merged together," I said. Then I stepped forward and shouted, "Meike! Don't kill them!"

The dragon's head slowly swung around to glare at me. Then her gaze shifted to Veronica, before she turned toward us, head dropping low to the ground, and began stalking forward like a cat after a mouse in the grass.

"Cormac," Veronica cried, moving behind me. "Please call off your dragon."

"Meike, the Abbess is on our side now," I said. "I explained the situation, and she has agreed to call off the commission."

That was really for the rank and file Sacred Death assassins. Meike knew how I subverted the Abbess. But Meike was also much closer to Tahki than the rest of us. I wasn't sure I could keep her from killing Veronica.

"She's a renner," I said. "Killing her will be a futile act."

It'll make me feel better, Meike's voice said into my head.

So it wasn't Tahki. Profound sadness filled my heart. She really was gone. I'd only known Tahki a few days, but she already felt like such a huge part of our lives.

I know, I said. But she's been reduced to a level 1 cleric, with virtually no powers. You'd be killing a helpless woman.

The dragon stopped, and let out a big sigh of resignation. I then watched as she blurred, her bulk collapsing in just a split second to become the beautiful redheaded elfmaid. She looked so sad and dejected that both Kahlan and Elky rushed to hold her. All three began to cry.

I blinked my burning eyes, unable to stop the tears. I don't know why that made me angry. Veronica recoiled when I turned on her.

  "I said I'm sorry."

"I know," I said through clenched teeth. I jabbed a finger at the other assassins. "Tell them. Command them to stand down."

Veronica stepped away, keeping a wary eye on me.

"Lord Quinton and the Red Knights are evil players," she said. "Hakira. Jamara. Call our Sisters back home. The hunt is over."

The two Prioresses began to argue with Veronica. I moved over to my ladies, wrapping my arms around them. But when the argument started to wind down, I spoke softly to Kahlan.

"Can you sneak up behind those women and suck away their energy, like you did back in the butcher shop?"

"I can try, but I doubt they'll allow me to get that close."

"I'll distract them," I said. Walking away, "Veronica, may I have a word alone with you, Hakira, and Jamara?"

While the Abbess agreed eagerly, eyes bright with possibilities, the other two looked upon me warily. At least the Abbess had gotten them all to disarm. Of course, with their weapons inventoried, disarmed had a different meaning.

I positioned myself so that their backs were to the others. I spoke to them about needing supplies before we departed the next day, and hot baths that night. While I spoke, the other assassins watched us intently, struggling to listen in. They didn't see the healer sneaking around behind them. Elky and Meike shadowed her, and I worried if anything went amiss, the latter two would eagerly slaughter them all.

Kahlan positioned herself behind a trainee at the right end of the line, and reached out and touched her neck. The trainee began to sag immediately. The healer quickly walked down the line, hand out at neck level, and touched each of them in a matter of seconds. One and all dropped to their knees, heads down, and looking distressed. Kahlan paced down the line a second time, and drained them into unconsciousness.

And then she walked up behind Hakira and Jamara, placing hands on each of them.

  "Ooh," Hakira gasped.

"Enough," I said, once both women dropped to hands and knees, barely awake.

I knelt between them, stoking their cheeks, and ensuring I held their eyes over and over. Soon, I began kissing their cheeks until they couldn't take it any longer, and pressed up to me and began smothering my face with kisses, while begging for my touch.

  Chapter 38

  Cormac

The crisp morning mountain air invigorated me. I wore a red woolen cloak to fight off the col
d, as well as a woolen brown tunic, leather pants, and boots. Leather bracers on my forearms helped a little, too.

The Order's three leaders and twenty-six Sisters currently in residence stood before us. All wore tight black or brown leather, gazing at me with adoring eyes, the exception being Veronica in bright white leather. Yeah, I spent the rest of the previous day, and well into the night, touching, kissing, and otherwise bringing those young beauties over to my side. I managed to avoid intercourse, but it tested my mettle.

I just couldn't get over the fact that they'd killed Tahki. At least the dragon lived on, in a manner of speaking, within Meike. The Order even gifted us with a three person saddle, which we put on Meike in her dragon form. Even so, we accepted four horses from the Order, as well as a not so small sum of money.

The killer nuns didn't really care about Kahlan, Elky, and Meike, but they loved me. They made sure I had everything I wanted and needed. So our inventories held hot food, beer, water, and some sweet treats, as well as camping supplies.

"Be careful, Cormac," Veronica said. She pressed up close and kissed me. "We sent out word to recall our Sisters, but they might still attack you. Once put on a commission, it is hard to turn them away from it."

Veronica had assured me that the assassins in the field would immediately obey a recall order. How they'd react to seeing their former prey was another matter. We'd have to be careful for at least the next two weeks. Of course, bounty hunters continued to look for us, too.

  Elky cleared her throat.

I slanted a look back at my ladies. They waited in their saddles, ready to go. So I kissed Veronica again, mostly for the Heart of Aphrodite to further push her under my thumb. No comment on my butt grab. Hey, her ass looked and felt amazing in tight shiny leather.

Mounting, I reined around to the gatehouse, and dug my heels into the gelding's ribs. He took off at a gallop, followed by Meike, Kahlan, and Elky. Villagers hurried out of our way as I tore through. I don't know why, but I enjoyed forcing them to scatter way too much. I was pretty sure Kahlan would scold me later.

I slowed to a walk once past the village. There were people on the road. That road hugged the side of the mountain, with terraced crops above and below. It kind of freaked me out, forcing me to ride as close to the mountain as possible.

It took hours to ride down those switchback roads. We stopped for a rest next to a rushing river, fed the horses, and then enjoyed a light meal.

"Where to?" Elky asked. "North, south, east, or west? My vote is east, over the mountains and into the desert."

"Screw that," Meike said. "You and your deserts. I vote we go north. My people live up north. It's very nice this time of year."

"But it won't be 'this time of year' by the time we get there," Elky replied. "It'll be cold and snowing."

I looked at Kahlan, who staring at me with hungry eyes. "And you? Do you want to ride north, south, east, or west?"

"I don't care, as long as I get to ride you," she purred. "Right now. I've been staring at your butt all the way down that mountain, bouncing in the saddle. All I can think about is bouncing up and down on your one-legged horse."

I laughed and shook my head, but something stirred. Something real nice. Love for my women welled up within, threatening to overcome me. And, something else stirred, too.

"You know I want to, but if we go there…" I said.

"We'll be here the rest of the day and night," Meike finished, and giggled. "Good! I was so jealous watching you touching and kissing all those stupid killers up there. I need some attention!"

"As do I," Elky said, smirking. "Okay, pigboy, you've been outvoted. Strip."

I looked from one to the other, to the other. All had hungry smiles, eyes full of desire. I shook my head, looked up at the heavens, and spoke my heart.

"I love this game!" My ladies giggled. "I love my life."
