“OK. Where are you right now? I have to tell you something.”
“Sir, you’re going to have to speak up. There’s something happening outside.” Sirens were blaring, their accompanying red and blue lights rolling through the window and across the walls. Starry was sitting up, her pale back to him as she got dressed.
“Yes I know, I’m here.”
Yoshi sat up too. “Wait, you’re in Sapphire?”
“Yes. I was called here by federal authorities in relation to Ivan.”
News had travelled fast. “So you thought you’d kill two birds with one stone by picking up Starry while you’re here.”
There was wailing and yelling from the other end of the phone.
“Yoshi!” Starry gasped. She was standing by the window, peeking out the curtain.
“The opposite actually. I’m here to tell you that you can keep her.”
“What?” He spluttered.
“Yoshi!” Starry repeated more urgently this time, clutching the curtain.
“How soon can you come to the Mr Pampers?” Poke asked, voice terse. Before he got an answer from Yoshi, he continued. “Just come out first but be careful. There are girlfriend bodies everywhere.”
