  Epilogue

Jessica was giving a great performance. She was sitting on a stool in the audience, watching a high school play practice that desperately needed work. But she didn’t want to hurt the actors’ feelings.

Just as they finished the scene, her water broke. Though it had taken her by surprise, she’d prepared. She motioned for one of her senior students, Jennifer, who came running over.

“Jen, go call the hospital and tell Jon I said it’s time for him please to come get me and call Steve.” Before Jennifer could run away, she pulled her to a stop. “First, dismiss the group and ask them to return to their classrooms.”

Jennifer made quick work of her orders and returned to Jessica’s side and helped her down from the stool. “The doctor said he’d be right here. Shall we go out and meet him?”

“Yes, of course,” Jessica agreed through gritted teeth as a pain gripped her belly.

Before they could reach the door, it swung open and Steve hurried to her side.

“What are you doing here? I thought you were out of town.” Jessica leaned against him.

“I finished early. Jon called the sheriff’s office to find out where I was. Luckily I was visiting with Mike. Come on, Jon’s almost here.”

He swung her into his arms, thanked Jennifer for her help and carried his wife out to Jon’s car.

A few hours later, Steve was staring in awe at his son, wrapped in Jessica’s arms.

Steve put his arm around both of them. “Sweetheart, you were so brave, and you gave birth to the best-looking baby in the world.”

“Be careful. Remember most of the family has already had babies they considered beautiful,” she teased.

“Okay, we’ll keep it a secret that they’re wrong,” he assured her with a grin. Then, in a more serious light, he said, “You’ve given me the most wonderful future in the world. I love you so much.”
