Argonwui: the Virgin, a cruel and vengeful deity, her beauty having been ravished by her uncle, Old Night. Eldest daughter of Elanion and Oroonin.

Urdei: blonde child, representing the past.
Vervandi: mysterious redhead, representing the present. Also serves Elanion, her mother.
Scolde: ancient crone who represents the future.

Zallerak: maverick wizard with an agenda.
Morak: the Dog Lord, warlock, Urgolais leader, seeking to return to power.
The Horned Man: a fawn-like creature of the Faen.

The Aralais: the Golden Folk, golden warrior wizards that once occupied parts of Ansu.
The Urgolais: Dark cousins of the Aralais, a subterranean people who coveted their cousins’ wealth.

Dark Faen: those Faen who sided with Old Night and his daughter against the Light.

Flail Six-Hands: Caswallon’s retainer, a Groil, who are soulless killers fashioned from sorcery by their masters, the Urgolais.
Drol Two-Heads: Flail’s lieutenant, a Groil.
Gribble: a Soilfin, one of the surviving winged goblins used as spies and messengers by the Urgolais in the Aralais-Urgolais war.
Vaarg: Morak’s former servant, a dragon, or Firewyrm, who survived the Aralais purge.
Ty-Tanders: legendary desert creatures, rumoured unkillable, feared guardians of the Crystal Mountains.

Kell: legendary first ruler; exile from Gol.
Thanek: Kell’s son, second ruler of Kelthaine.
Kelsalion the Third: late High King, descendant of Kell and Thanek, recently murdered.

Caswallon: sorcerer and usurper of Kelthaine’s Glass Throne, schooled by Morak, the Urgolais.
Halfdan: outlawed leader of the Wolf regiment, the High King’s younger brother. Believed missing or dead.
Belmarius: exiled leader of the Bear regiment.
Valentin: an officer in the Bears, leader of Belmarius’s Rangers
Perani: previous leader of the Tiger regiment, now Caswallon’s henchman.
Derino: Perani’s lieutenant.
Cale: young cutpurse who falls foul of Corin.
Ulf: Cale’s companion, a brigand.
Starki: Ulf’s twin.
Jen: crofter and wise woman.
Cullan: Jen’s husband, formally a soldier.
Dail: Jen and Cullan’s son.
Bleyne: mysterious archer.
Starkhold: leader of garrison in Car Carranis. Formerly a warlord from Raleen.
Ralian: his eagle-eyed second in command.

Wynna: Kell’s other son and first ruler of Kelwyn.
King Nogel: Wynna’s descendant, recently killed in a hunting accident.
Queen Ariane: Nogel’s daughter, new to throne.
Dazaleon: Ariane’s high priest and councillor.

Jerrel: another survivor of Gol’s destruction, became first Duke of Morwella.
Tomais: present and sickly Duke, Jerrel’s descendant.

Hagan Delmorier: hired hand and killer. Outlawed from Morwella, he now serves Caswallon and Rael Hakkenon; Corin’s former drinking partner, now bitter enemy.
