  Crun Earth-Shatterer: a treacherous giant imprisoned on Laras Lassladan.

  Undeyna: Old Night’s twisted daughter, known as the Witch Queen. Haunts the forest of Darkvale.

  Simiolanis: golden-haired demi-goddess known for her beauty and infidelity.

  Argonwui: the Virgin, a cruel and vengeful deity, her beauty having been ravished by her uncle, Old Night. Eldest daughter of Elanion and Oroonin.

  THE FATES

  Urdei: blonde child, representing the past.

  Vervandi: mysterious redhead, representing the present. Also serves Elanion, her mother.

  Scolde: ancient crone who represents the future.

  SUPERNATURALS

  Zallerak: maverick wizard with an agenda.

  Morak: the Dog Lord, warlock, Urgolais leader, seeking to return to power.

  The Horned Man: a fawn-like creature of the Faen.

  ALIEN PEOPLES

  The Aralais: the Golden Folk, golden warrior wizards that once occupied parts of Ansu.

  The Urgolais: Dark cousins of the Aralais, a subterranean people who coveted their cousins’ wealth.

  The Faen: the faerie people, Elanion’s chosen and the first occupants of Ansu.

  Dark Faen: those Faen who sided with Old Night and his daughter against the Light.

  CREATURES

  Flail Six-Hands: Caswallon’s retainer, a Groil, who are soulless killers fashioned from sorcery by their masters, the Urgolais.

  Drol Two-Heads: Flail’s lieutenant, a Groil.

  Gribble: a Soilfin, one of the surviving winged goblins used as spies and messengers by the Urgolais in the Aralais-Urgolais war.

  Vaarg: Morak’s former servant, a dragon, or Firewyrm, who survived the Aralais purge.

  Ty-Tanders: legendary desert creatures, rumoured unkillable, feared guardians of the Crystal Mountains.

  MORTALS

  THE FOUR KINGDOMS

  Kelthaine, The First Kingdom

  Kell: legendary first ruler; exile from Gol.

  Thanek: Kell’s son, second ruler of Kelthaine.

  Kelsalion the Third: late High King, descendant of Kell and Thanek, recently murdered.

  Prince Tarin: Kelsalion’s renegade son.

  Caswallon: sorcerer and usurper of Kelthaine’s Glass Throne, schooled by Morak, the Urgolais.

  Halfdan: outlawed leader of the Wolf regiment, the High King’s younger brother. Believed missing or dead.

  Belmarius: exiled leader of the Bear regiment.

  Valentin: an officer in the Bears, leader of Belmarius’s Rangers

  Perani: previous leader of the Tiger regiment, now Caswallon’s henchman.

  Derino: Perani’s lieutenant.

  Cale: young cutpurse who falls foul of Corin.

  Ulf: Cale’s companion, a brigand.

  Starki: Ulf’s twin.

  Jen: crofter and wise woman.

  Cullan: Jen’s husband, formally a soldier.

  Dail: Jen and Cullan’s son.

  Bleyne: mysterious archer.

  Starkhold: leader of garrison in Car Carranis. Formerly a warlord from Raleen.

  Ralian: his eagle-eyed second in command.

  Kelwyn, The Second Kingdom

  Wynna: Kell’s other son and first ruler of Kelwyn.

  King Nogel: Wynna’s descendant, recently killed in a hunting accident.

  Queen Ariane: Nogel’s daughter, new to throne.

  Dazaleon: Ariane’s high priest and councillor.

  Roman Parantios: Ariane’s champion at arms.

  Yail Tolranna: Ariane’s newly promoted captain of guard.

  Tamersane: Tolranna’s brother, joker and wit.

  Galed: Ariane’s head scribe, called “squire” by Roman.

  Tarello: Tolranna’s first officer in Wynais.

  Raleen, The Third Kingdom

  Kael: warrior exiled from Gol, founder and first ruler of Raleen.

  Raleen: Kael’s beloved daughter, after whom he named his country.

  Silon: merchant, Corin’s former employer.

  Nalissa: Silon’s daughter and the reason for Corin’s departure north.

  Rado: proprietor of The Crooked Knife tavern in Port Sarfe.

  Darosi: a captain of horse from Atarios.

  Jaan: his lieutenant.

  Morwella, The Fourth Kingdom

  Jerrel: another survivor of Gol’s destruction, became first Duke of Morwella.

  Tomais: present and sickly Duke, Jerrel’s descendant.

  Shallan: Tomais’s headstrong daughter, First Lady of Morwella. Haunted by visions of the Horned Man.

  Hagan Delmorier: hired hand and killer. Outlawed from Morwella, he now serves Caswallon and Rael Hakkenon; Corin’s former drinking partner, now bitter enemy.

  Borgil: Hagan’s brutal lieutenant.

  THE OUTER REALMS

  Fol

  Corin an Fol: contracted mercenary and former soldier in the Wolf regiment.

  Burmon: kindly innkeep in Finnehalle, Corin’s birthplace.

  Holly: Burmon’s daughter.

  Polin: former blacksmith, once Corin’s friend.

  King Haal: Barbarian ruler of Leeth.

  Daan Redhand: heir and eldest son of King Haal, bloodthirsty warrior prince. Sworn foe of Barin of Valkador.

  Vale The Snake: King Haal’s second son.

  Corvalian: King Haal’s youngest son.

  Valkador

  Barin: giant axeman. Master of the brigantine, The Starlight Wanderer. Sworn foe to Daan Redhand.

  Fassof: Barin’s foul-mouthed first mate.

  Cogga: one of Barin’s crewmen.

  Ruagon: The Starlight Wanderer’s cook.

  Taic: Barin’s wayward nephew.

  Sveyn: Taic’s sidekick and nephew of Cogga.

  Samadin the Marvellous: sultan of Permio.

  Damazen Kand: leader of the sultan’s crimson guard.

  Barakani: Wolf of the Desert. A tribal leader.

  Rassan: one of his seven sons.

  Yashan: a tribesman.

  Jarrof: a tribesman.

  Migen: an officer in the sultan’s crimson guard.

  Gamesh: a sergeant in the sultan’s crimson guard.

  Sulimo: a merchant.

  Marl: a mercenary in Sulimo’s pay.

  Hulm: an innkeep in Agmandeur.

  Olami: his sickly brother.

  Ragu: his stable boy.
