“Do you think it will work?” asked Fangs.
“It has to,” Puppy replied. “Unless you want to go back to London and admit that we lost the princess and the Jade Panther in one go.”
Fangs shuddered at the thought. “You’ve done a great job, I have to admit. If I didn’t know that was really RALF…”
“No one will ever know it’s RALF,” said Puppy. “I’ve rewritten Cube’s program so that it will stay looking like the princess permanently. I’ve even added artificial ageing software, so that she’ll appear to grow older over time.”
“What if Cube tries to deactivate the android from HQ?”
“I’ve changed the frequency in RALF’s receiver,” Puppy explained. “And, anyway, Cube thinks RALF was lost days ago. He’ll be working on a replacement by now.”
A shadow fell over the table. “One blood milkshake, an orange juice and a glass of the finest champagne this place has to offer,” Issy Death said, putting the drinks down on the table. She sat and cuddled up to Fangs.
“Heard from your ex-boss?” the vampire asked, taking a sip of his drink.
Issy shook her head. “No, and I don’t want to.”
“He escaped,” said Fangs matter-of-factly. “But he’ll be back.”
“Forget about him,” Issy said, jumping to her feet. She grabbed Fangs’s hand. “Dance with me.”
“I’ll give it a try,” said Fangs, “but my specialty is the fang-dango.” Fangs scooped Issy up into his arms and carried her, giggling, to the dance floor.
Puppy laughed and settled back in her chair to watch them. Had she been looking the other way, she might have noticed a green-gloved hand appear from beneath the top table and take Princess Tiara’s royal crown…
