by Denise Vega

I asked Tyler to the Spring Dance, but some girl from B Track had already asked him. Not that I like like him or anything, but he is kind of cute in a non-geeky, non-nerdy kind of way. Mark had strep and there wasn’t anyone else I wanted to go with me (and no 1 asked me), so I helped Jilly get ready to go with Bus Boy.

Just B4 school got out, someone uploaded a picture of Mrs. Porter to the Intranet, but they had doctored it to make it look like she was dancing on a table with 1 of her puppets, a toy whale, on her head.

Steve said it wasn’t supposed to go live and that he just wanted to show it to all of us and then get rid of it. He got 1 day of detention and had to write a formal letter of apology to Mrs. AND Mr. Porter (I have a hard time imagining a Mr. Porter. I wonder if he has strings? Oh, wait. That’s not nice. Strike that).

  So life goes on.

Things That Are Freaking Me Out

  • Jilly is still going out with Bus Boy. I know his name is Jon Lanner but I will always think of him as Bus Boy. It’s been 6 months. This is a world record for her.

  • On the 2nd to last day of school, Mark handed me a small pillow, then kissed me. I kissed him back, and we decided we were glad we tried it and we’ll never do it again. Mr. Foslowski was right. A good friend can be better than a boyfriend. And I don’t have to worry about sweaty hands or bad breath.

  • I’m starting to get boobs. Real ones. I had to buy a real bra and get rid of my training bras. Jilly still has the same size trainers. Not that that’s important, of course, but I’m just pointing out a fact. I also got a sports bra so I don’t bounce when I play basketball or soccer.

  Things That Give Me Hope

  • MBMS will continue the Intranet and is also thinking about having a real-live website on the Internet for the school! This will be separate from the Intranet but just as much fun to create. Ms. Moreno has asked me to head up the design if they approve it. We may even start working on it over the summer.

  • Serena only sneers half as much as she used to. She actually has a pretty smile.

  • Chris is dating this really great girl and I heard that Amanda Worthington is jealous. Can you imagine? What a strange, strange world we live in.

  • Mark, Rosie, Tyler, and I are in the same computer camp this summer. I’m psyched!

  • And finally, I grew TWO inches this year. That’s right, TWO. Maybe the ped really does stop here.

Wow. Would you look at that. I have 5 things that give me hope and only 3 that are freaking me out.

Well, Rosie and I are going to kick the soccer ball around so we can kick some serious butt next week at soccer camp. Tyler’s coming along to play goalie.

Contrary to all the laws of seventh grade, it looks like I will move on in the fall.

Like Erin Swift, Denise Vega survived seventh grade, though not with nearly as much humor and grace as her main character. However, Denise still wears Chuck Taylors (her favorite pair is red with black laces), loves cherry Tootsie Pops, and lives with her husband, three kids, and their dog in Colorado. Click Here is her first novel for young people.
