“Thank you,” Harlan says, extending his hand to both of them.
“No problem,” he says, “and thank you for your time.”
Harlan walks the detectives to the door. Once I hear it close, I look to Jackie. She doesn’t say a word about the lie I told the detectives. She simply stands up and walks out of the house. I don’t have to worry about her blabbing to the police. She may be mad at me, but she won’t contact them and tell them what she knows.
I sit down beside Davian, wrap my arm around his shoulders and pull him close. He’s stiff, angry. I completely understand. I feel his pain.
“We’re going to be alright,” I whisper.
Harlan returns, and he stands in front of us.
“You did the right thing,” he remarks. “You guys saved this family.”
“Davian, go outside.”
He does as I say, sulking all the way.
Once the patio door closes, I stand and say to Harlan, “Let me make myself perfectly clear. If Terrence ever comes into our home again, I will call Detective Richardson myself, and I will tell him everything. It doesn’t matter if it’s here or our home on Privilege Place, he better not set foot in our house again. Am I clear?”
“Joslyn-”
“No, Harlan, I mean it. He’s not in this family anymore.” I head to the patio, slamming the door behind me.
I will never forget that Harlan allowed Terrence to get away with kidnapping, attempted murder, rape, and child abuse. But I will forgive because that’s the only way I can move on in this marriage. It’s the only way to successfully rebuild this family.
My children now stands before me, in the glorious morning, and I hold my arms open for them. They come to me with smiles and hugs. Their spirit is my breath. Their love gives me strength. They are everything to me. We are going to make it. I can see this family’s future in them, and I know we will be just fine.
Epilogue
Crazy. Can’t believe Terrence went that far. Sick bastard. He never did call, write, text, nor update his Facebook page. I hope I never see him again. I better not see him again. I’ll call the cops so quick, and I won’t care how Harlan reacts.
Charli Love and I no longer speak. I don’t go to the Ladies of Tudor Estates meetings anymore. I’m no longer the Mistress-At-Arms. I hear the position is still open. When it comes to parties, I’m not invited. If there’s any special events going on sponsored by the Ladies of Tudor Estates, I hear about it, but I don’t go. I’m fine with it. No more of Charli’s bull crap, no more of her meddling into my personal business. Whoever she’s friends with, they better watch themselves around her. That woman is a snake and will do anything to anyone to get ahead.
As for Gia Briggs, Harlan and I are suing her. It was his decision actually. He wants her house, too. Jackie says that we won’t get the property, and there’s a slim chance we’ll get the money. I’m not really interested, but word around Tudor is that I’m spearheading the effort. Whatever. Shows how rumors are really nothing but lies.
I never did find out about Oliver’s problem. I won’t ask Harlan, and I’m not going to ask Sarah. I’ll let it be Harlan’s little secret. It’s probably a good thing I don’t know. I’d probably divorce Harlan if I knew the truth.
We still live in Tudor Estates. I’m not ever moving out. I don’t care what rumors Charli spreads about me. I don’t care what people think. My home is there, and my kids love it.
Eventually, we all healed, not completely, but we did. And the days were much easier.
