According to Norse tradition, Hel is one of three children born to Loki and Angrboda. Her face is described as half in light and half in darkness. She is half dead and half alive. Her face is at once beautiful to look upon and at the same time, horrific in form.

“Garrett, I swear, we’ll get her back.” Raven knelt below her best friend’s throne as he grieved for the woman he loved. Her heart sank as she looked into in his cold, dead eyes. “Michael and I are working with Abigail and Asmodeus to find a way into Hel. We’ll figure it out, I promise.”

Death blinked at Raven’s mention of Hel. It was a place and a person, but only one held his heart in her hands.

Holli, aka the Goddess Hel, had become Garrett’s wife when he’d assumed the role of Death and became the leader of Purgatory and all its Reapers. This, of course, was only after Loki––Hel’s father, had tricked them all with his twisted plan to unleash her and the previous leader of Purgatory into the mortal world in hopes of plunging the realms into utter chaos––the bastard. Thankfully, Garrett––with the help of his best friend and head Reaper, Raven, and her heavenly consort, the archangel Michael––thwarted Loki’s plan not once, but twice. However, this time, they had all paid a heavy price.

Garrett looked down, meeting Raven’s gaze with his sad eyes. “Thank you. Please keep me informed if you find a way into Hel.” Raising his scythe, he disappeared in a cloud of smoke and shadow, most likely returning to the alternate castle which he and Holli had shared.

“Oh my god, Michael, we have to do something! I’ve never seen him like this.” Raven stood up and threw her hands in the air, flaring her massive black wings. “Isn’t there anything Heaven can do?”

Michael didn’t respond but simply held out his arms and welcomed her into his waiting embrace. Their wings brushed against one another’s, his pure white to her stark black. “I’ve already asked and the answer is still no. Holli has blocked all access to Hel, and until we find a way around that, I’m afraid the only thing we can do is wait.” He kissed the top of her head as he wound his fingers under the curtain of her long raven hair.

Icy fragments climbed up her legs as the portal behind her continued to drag her down. Raven’s scream pierced her ears while her husband raced to reach her, struggling to pull her back out of the void. “Ahhhhh!” she cried out and closed her eyes as a sharp pain erupted along the left side of her face.

She heard Abigail ask , “Oh my god! What’s happening to her?” and wondered the same thing herself.

It was then that she understood.

Holli’s eyes snapped open. Time stood still as she stared at them all through her now mismatched eyes. One was still the beautiful bright blue, while the other was a black speck inside a frozen empty socket.

  “Holli, my love?” Death gasped.

“My name is Hel, now please, let me go.” She yanked her hand from her husband’s and disappeared into the frost.

Holli woke to the sound of her own screams––again. The memory of falling through the portal and back into Hel continued to replay over and over in her mind. Cradling her half-collapsed face in her hands, she wept tears of ice from the bedroom of her frozen castle.

After being pulled through Loki’s portal, she’d arrived on the ice-covered steps of her previous home, fully aware of her role as the Goddess Hel. Images of the souls that needed to be judged began bombarding her instantly, but all she could do was cry at the loss of Garrett and her friends. In an effort to escape her old life and the duties that came with it, she’d raced through the front doors and into her throne room where she cast a protective spell to block out the magic of her realm. It was her hope to remain sealed inside until Garrett found a way to save her.

  Praise for Raven’s Breath

“ ...this was an addicting, thrill ride of a read which kept me turning pages and cursing real life that kept interrupting me... A new take on a tale that is literally as old as time, I would challenge anyone to predict the ending. Brilliant!” ~ NerdGirl

“The plot is wonderful. The characters are amazing and fun. Tish Thawer's Raven's Breath is unique story. Meet the only female Grim Reaper...There are so many things that I love about this book but my favorite is the twist at the end.” ~ GoodReads Reviewer

“...I now rate this story as one of my all-time faves. Raven is the first female Grim Reaper. One would think that would make for a dark, sinister story line. Well, it does, but not in the way you'd think. Ms. Thawer also breathes humor, light, and romance into this Sci-Fi novel. I love Raven's character, with her spunkiness, gumption, and self-deprecating humor. The scenes are lushly drawn, and the other characters grab your interest and add so much to an already wonderful story. If you've never read Sci-Fi before, read this as your first. If you love a great plot, read this. If you haven't finished it by Sunday evening, call in sick to work Monday morning. You'll be glad you did. I am so looking forward to reading the next in this series!” ~ Amazon Reviewer
