Shanice,
As promised, here is the money to cover the hospital bill for Tyson. There’s more inside for you. Please accept this and my apology that I can’t be there for when Tyson wakes but I have other commitments. You have raised a good man. He loves you dearly.
Take care,
Jack
Tyson bent down and unlatched the locks on the suitcase. When he opened it, his mouth widened. “Mom. Mom! Hey Mom!”
“What is it?”
She hurried out with Carla only to look down in amazement. Tyson handed the note to her and hobbled as fast as he could down the front yard path to the open gate. When he made it to the end he looked down the street and in the distance he saw a figure walking away. Tyson raised a hand. “Hey Jack!” The figure turned and Tyson smiled. “Hold up.”
He hobbled up the road. Jack met him halfway and they clasped hands and gave each other a shoulder pat. “Good to see you up and about again.”
“You too.”
He noticed Jack wince.
“I heard about the fight.” He smiled. “You beat him… The Duke.”
Jack smiled and Tyson thumbed over his shoulder. “Hey come on back, we’re about to have breakfast.”
“I can’t. I have to leave.”
“Look, my mom isn’t mad at you or anything, Hell, it’s quite the opposite. You know you didn’t have to leave all of that money there. Remember our deal. Fifty-fifty?”
“You keep it. Your mother could use it.”
Tyson looked perplexed as if unable to grasp his generosity.
“But what about you?”
“I’ll be fine.”
He nodded. “You sure you don’t want to stick around? We could make some good money.”
Jack chuckled. “Stay away from the fight scene, Tyson. There’s a better life for you out there. Believe me, that kind of life only ends badly.”
“You’re telling me,” he said looking down at his leg. “No, I was thinking of going into managing fights.”
“How about you stick to managing your mother’s health for now.”
They both laughed and Jack looked beyond Tyson to where Carla was. Tyson noticed and turned. “Oh yeah, she’s stuck around.”
Jack nodded. “Give her a chance. We all make mistakes.”
“Thanks, Jack.”
“No, thank you.”
He shook his hand and wished him a farewell before turning to leave.
“Hey Jack. Where you heading?”
Without turning he hollered, “Haven’t decided yet.”
“Well if you’re ever back this way, you be sure to drop in, okay?”
Jack stuck a thumb up and continued heading out of the city looking to hitch a ride. He fished into his pocket and retrieved the small note with the name of the state. Was it a trap? Or a dead end lead? Was it worth even pursuing? Although he didn’t have all the answers to Dana’s disappearance, his journey to Santa Fe hadn’t been in vain. Shanice and Tyson were better for it, and Pope was where he should be, under the watchful eye of the law. Jack breathed in the morning air. He now held a small piece of the puzzle, and in time would find her or die trying. With nothing more than the clothes on his back and five thousand in his bag, he went south to thumb a ride. Fifty minutes later he climbed up into the warmth of an eighteen-wheeler.
“Where you heading, stranger?”
Jack squeezed the scrap of paper in his leather pocket and replied.
Minutes later they headed east on I-40 to Arkansas.
