Witness for the Defense Page 35

by Jonnie Jacobs

“Hi, boss. Sorry to bother you.” Jared sounded tentative. I'd left strict instructions—don't bother me unless it's absolutely necessary.

“Not a problem. I'm just sitting in my car drinking a Dr. Pepper.”

“I know you said you wanted to be alone, and I didn't know if I should call or not, but then I thought—”

“It's okay, Jared. Really.” It was actually nice to hear his voice.

“Steven Cross's memorial service is day after tomorrow. I thought you might want to know.”

  “Thanks.”

“You coming back soon? You've got a lot of messages.”

  “I'll probably head home tomorrow.”

I ended up leaving that night instead. The quiet bubble of time away from time had been burst. I decided I might as well move forward.

  Wherever that took me.
