  EPILOGUE

  Mandy

When I went to Onyx’s party, I knew they weren’t going to let me in. I played it safe though and bided my time. I left the house with every intention of getting in that party, no matter what. I just decided that it might work out better if I don’t show my face there at all. So I sat in the parking lot and waited for the party to die down. I saw when Lucy and Greg left and that nigga did not look happy.

I know by the time their night is over, she won’t be happy either. The reason I never liked Greg’s ass is because I found out he was married a few months ago. The way I found out was kind of funny though because I was at the grocery store and so was he, with his pregnant wife. When he saw me, he looked scared as shit. I guess he thought that I was gonna go up to them and rat him out, but that ain’t my business. Even though Lucy and I are related, I ain’t fixing to stick my neck out in her business because she may not believe me at all.

Our relationship ain’t that good so I don’t need to fuck it up anymore that it already is. I figured eventually she would find out about his wife and end things with him on her own. And I’m glad I didn’t tell her because her heartbreak right now would do me some good after what she did to me earlier.

I can’t believe she told Onyx the truth about my pregnancy. What the hell was she thinking? That matter did and does not concern her so she should have kept my business to her damn self. I don’t understand why she would have revealed that information anyway. What purpose does it serve her to fuck over on me?

At 2:35 a.m. Starr and Onyx are finally leaving the damn club. I had taken a nap and everything waiting on their asses. Just because it was his party, didn’t mean he had to stay all damn night. When the two of them walk out hand in hand, I want to vomit. I still can’t believe he is with her ass. What irks me the most though is that purple dress that matches my man’s tie. What the hell was she thinking coordinating with him like that?

That bitch ain’t nothing but trouble and I see now that she will stop at nothing to completely eliminate me from the picture. Little does she know that I have plans to eliminate her ass also. She has plans that will eliminate me but I’ll still be alive to pursue that nigga til the end of time. Whereas, she will be six feet under getting eaten by maggots and what not.

When the two of them pull up to the Hyatt Regency, I was even more mad and jealous than ever. I gave Onyx four years, and he has never taken me to this hotel. They even have valet parking. Why the hell does she get the valet and not me? Why am I not good enough to get this type of service? What the fuck makes Starr’s ass more precious or special than me? This shit is so unfair and ridiculous as fuck! I am livid as I watch the two of them walk in, still holding fuckin’ hands. They get in the elevator and I watch as it goes up to the third floor. I walk up to the front desk and ask if I can get a room on the third floor for the night.

I use my mom’s black card to pay the $172 charge. I hope that when she sees that charge come up she doesn’t kill me. I get the key to room 363 and head for the stairs. I could use the elevator but taking the stairs will allow me to stick my head out and make sure the coast is clear before I emerge onto the floor. I head to my room and hop in the shower. Once I’ve cleaned my ass, I climb in the bed to get some rest. I’m exhausted and I know I ain’t going to find anything out about them two right now.

They are probably in that room fucking like rabbits. Well I hope they fuck enough to last a lifetime because what I have in store for that bitch, is definitely one for the books. Sleep finally takes over and I allow Mr. Sandman to throw a blanket over me so I can rest comfortably. This bed is everything, with its soft and silky sheets and plush covers and huge king size pillows. A chick can get used to this type of treatment.

Later on that day, I wake up and look at the time on the bedside clock and it reads 1:30 p.m. Dammit! Check out time was at 11 this morning. My mom and dad are going to have my ass for this charge on their card. I quickly get my ass downstairs and check out. The woman says that I’m still going to be charged even though I’m leaving because I missed the check out time. I want to cuss her ass out in twenty different languages, but I can’t afford to make a scene. I don’t want Onyx to know that I was here spying on them.

I make it outside to my car and drive to where I’m not too far from Onyx’s car. Like what the fuck are they still doing here? Why haven’t they checked out yet? Is he still fucking her damn brains out or what? I sit in wait while listening to music on the radio until they finally emerge around eight that evening. As they are walking hand in hand, I am seething mad right now. At this point, I don’t really know what I’m going to do. I know what I want to do, but with the two of them glued together like that, my plan won’t work.

They are almost to his car when someone from the inside calls his name. He gives her a kiss before he says, “Be right back” and runs back to the hotel. He has unlocked the car for her because I heard him do it, but before she can get to the car, I start my car up, pump my gas and since there isn’t much space separating my car from his, she didn’t have any time to get out of my way before my car slams into her ass.

She hits the hood of my car and my windshield before hitting the ground. She must have fallen off to the side or something because I know my car didn’t roll over here.

“Shit! Shit! Shit! I really hope that bitch is dead!” I say as I burn like hell getting away from that parking lot. I had no intentions on running that bitch down when I followed them here. It just came to me when I saw the two of them walking together. It really pissed me off to see the two of them holding hands, all in love without a care in the world. Well I bet they got some cares now.

“Fuck! This bitch done messed up my fuckin’ windshield! Damn! Now, I’ma have to find somebody to repair that shit before my mom and dad see it,” I say to myself.

This bitch is really causing me some super problems and has given me a super headache. Oh snap! I think I know who can fix my windshield. My mom’s cousin Ernest can probably fix it. He will do anything for a 12 pack of Bud Light Platinum, including give you one of his damn kidneys. But how can I get Cousin Ernest to fix my windshield without my mom finding out? Man, this fuckin’ day just keeps getting better and better. I hope no one saw me hit that bitch and I sure hope that they didn’t see my car.

But that will teach her that she should have left my man alone. I been telling her that he’s mine and she kept disregarding my fucking warnings.

“Well there bitch. That’s what you get for not listening to me when I was trying to tell you what the damn deal was. I bet you gon’ know better now and my mom always says, if you know better, you do better. You fuckin’ bitch! Man, I sure hope your ass is dead!” I say to myself as I look at myself in the rearview mirror.

I guess my nerves are bad because my hands are shaking to the point where I need to pull over. I pull over to the side of the road to try and catch a grip on the situation. I can’t go anywhere else because of this fuckin’ dama
ge to my windshield. Damn! I guess I’d better get to Cousin Ernest’s place. Lucky for me it’s dark outside so the chances of someone seeing my car when I hit that bitch are slim to none, just how I like it.

I take a deep breath and try to relax my nerves as I drive in the direction of my cousin’s place. I really hope that bitch is dead because if she ain’t, I’ma have to finish the job. I told her to stay away from my man. I told her, over and over again, time and time again and she still didn’t heed my warnings. Well now she knows that I mean business. Well I hope she’s dead so maybe now I can comfort my baby during this terrible tragedy.

I have a beautiful black dress with lace across my breasts that I’ve been saving for a special occasion. Starr’s funeral may as well be that occasion. I’ll wear some shades so that people will think I’m grieving just as much as the next nigga. Yes, that little black dress will be perfect for that bitch’s trip to her final resting place.

Poor Onyx. He’s really going to need a friend to talk to and confide in. He’s going to need someone to hold him and tell him that everything will be alright and I’m going to be there for him. I love Onyx and he knows it. Him leaving me for her was a mistake and I’m sure after he finds her dead body outside that hotel, he will know that he should have stayed with me all along. I’m almost at my cousin’s house and it’s almost nine o’clock. I hope that nigga don’t ask me too many damn questions about how that windshield got fucked up. Otherwise, I may have to fuck him up too.

I never wanted to hurt that girl. I just didn’t know how else to get my man to come back to me. I just hope that this little plan to get Onyx back doesn’t backfire on me. He has to come back to me. Who else can comfort him during his time of grief the way I can? I’m waiting on you Onyx. I love you.

  CHAPTER ONE

  Onyx

I didn’t know what the dude was calling me for, but he said I had forgotten my receipt. I don’t really need it but I thank him and head back outside to find my beautiful girl. When I make it outside, there are a few people crowding around something, so I start looking for Starr. Where the heck did she go? I move towards the crowd, slowly at first, then moving faster because I am not sure where she is. I know her and she wouldn’t have just up and left me like that.

As I move in closer, I see that the person on the ground that the people have crowded around is Starr. What the hell happened to her? I can hear someone groaning in pain and the only one that it could be is Starr.

I move through the crowd, “Excuse me! Excuse me!” I cry out frantically.

When I’m finally next to Starr, I kneel down beside her, “Baby are you okay? What happened?”

  “Car…car…hit…me,” she mutters in pain.

“Call an ambulance!” I call out.

“Ambulance is on the way son,” someone from the crowd says.

“Thank you,” I say to the crowd, tears burning to escape my eyes. I look around, trying to find the person who was driving the car that hit Starr, but can’t see anything pass the crowd.

“Which one of y’all did this? WHO HIT HER?” I scream through the crowd. No one steps up to take the blame.

“I saw what happened,” someone says faintly from the crowd of people.

  “Who said that?” I ask.

“I did,” a woman answers. She goes on to say, “This car just came barreling across the parking lot, right into her. The driver didn’t even try to slow down or bother to stop, almost as if it were on purpose.”

“Will you tell that to the police please?” I ask.

“I sure will,” she says adamantly.

  “Thank you,” I say.

“Baby, just hold on sweetie. The ambulance is on the way,” I tell her.

She groans again in pain and I grip her hand and say, “I’m here baby and the ambulance should be here soon. Just hold on.”

“My arm and my stomach hurts babe. I feel like I can’t breathe,” she says.

“You’re alright baby. Just hold on,” I say, hoping that I’m right.

I can hear the sirens growing closer and hope that both the paramedics and police are coming. I wonder how many other people saw Starr get hit by that car. Who the hell would have hit her and why didn’t they stick around and wait for the police? If this was an accident, why wouldn’t they want to tell the police about it? Who would run from the scene of an accident without making sure the victim is okay?

Two police cars and an ambulance pull into the parking lot. The police step out and ask everyone to clear a pathway for the ambulance to get by. The paramedics make their way over to where Starr is laying on the concrete slab on her back.

“What’s her name?” one of the emergency medics asks me.

“Her name is Starr,” I say.

“Starr, my name is Roni. I’m an emergency medical responder and I’m here to help you. Do you know what day it is?” she asks Starr.

  “Saturday,” Starr responds weakly.

“Good, that’s really good. Do you remember what happened to you?” Roni asks.

  “Someone hit me,” she says.

“Okay. So you were in a fight?” Roni asks.

The other paramedic comes over with his medical bag. Starr shakes her head slowly as her eyes flutter open and shut slowly.

“Did you see what happened sir?” the policeman asks me.

“No officer, but the woman standing over there said she saw everything,” I say.

He moves over to speak with the woman who informed me that she saw what happened.

“Where are you hurting ma’am?” the paramedic with the stretcher asks Starr.

“My stomach, right arm and my head is spinning,” she says.

“Well, we are going to prepare you for transport. Okay?” Roni asks.

Starr slowly nods her head. While the paramedics are putting a neck brace around Starr’s neck, I pull out my phone and call her house phone. The paramedics place Starr on top of the yellow back board, strap her to it and lift her up to put her on the stretcher.

“Hello,” Mrs. Nina, Starr’s mom answers the phone.

“Mrs. Nina, it’s Onyx. There’s been an accident,” I say into the phone.

“What do you mean an accident? Is Starr alright?”

“She’s been involved in a hit and run,” I answer.

  “What do you mean?”

“Someone ran her down in the parking lot and drove off,” I say.

“Oh my God! Is she alright? Where are you?” she asks frantically.

“We’re on our way to…” I look at the emergency medical tech to find out where they’re going to transport Starr.

  “Emory University,” Roni says.

“They’re taking her to Emory University,” I say.

“I’m on my way,” she says and ends the call.

“Do you want to ride with us?” asks the male medic.

“I’ll follow you there,” I say and hop in my car, following right behind them.

The fact that Starr was still able to speak was a good thing; at least, that’s the impression that I got. She was able to tell us what day it was and what was hurting her. Maybe she wasn’t injured that bad. I know one thing, I’m thanking God that it wasn’t worse than this. I’m wracking my brain out trying to figure out who ran Starr down, but since I didn’t see it happen and it could have been anybody, I don’t know where to start.

The ride to the hospital was very nerve wracking for me. I called my parents to tell them what happened and they asked if I wanted them to come meet me. I said yes. I didn’t want to have to face Starr’s parents alone, especially since they had ordered her to come home earlier. She assured them that she was safe with me and she should have been. How could things that were going so wonderfully just a few hours ago, go so painfully wrong?

I say a prayer for Starr because if anything were to happen to her, I don’t know what I would do. She means everything to me.

“Dear Heavenly Father, I know that it breaks your heart oh Lord, to see your c
hildren suffer. Sin has corrupted the beauty of your creation, exposing us to harsh circumstances such as illness. I need you Lord. I need you to make Starr well. I don’t know who could have or would have done such a horrible thing to her. But please Lord, please let her be okay. She’s all I have and she means the world to me. I don’t know what I would do if I lost her. I pray you will heal her Lord. Heal her please so we can be happy again. If you help her to get better Lord, I promise to do better as the man you wanted me to be. That’s all for now Lord. Thanks for listening. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.”

The ambulance pulls into the emergency entrance of the hospital parking lot and rush Starr inside. I wonder what the urgency is because last I saw her, she was talking and responding to questions. Now, they’re rushing her into the hospital. I hurry and park my car and race into the emergency room.

“I’m here with the young girl that was just brought in. Is she okay?” I ask the nurse at the station.

“They just rushed her in and the doctors are working on her,” she says.

“Is she okay? I was following behind the ambulance so I don’t know how she is. I’m just worried about her,” I say.

“We have some great doctors here so I’m sure she will be fine,” she says in an effort to reassure me.

“I hope so,” I say as I make my way to the waiting room.

Eight minutes later, Ms. Nina, Starr’s sister Maggie and her brother J.T. come busting through the doors. I watch as Starr’s mom rushes up to the nurse’s station to question the nurse about Starr. I want to say something to her, but I think the best thing for me to do is just keep my mouth closed for as long as I can.

“My name is Nina Landry. I was told my daughter Starr was in some kind of accident and she was brought here by ambulance. Where is she?” she asks the nurse.

“The doctors are working on her now,” the nurse responds.

“Working on her? What happened to her?”
