With Chris working for the night, we didn’t have to wait to get into the club. Chris’s intern, Jules, was deejaying until he got there. We walked to the bar, passing people who already had drunk too much. People had on party hats and colored aluminum streamers were everywhere. A girl I didn’t even know blew a party whistle in my face and said, “Happy New Year.” I said the same as I followed behind Chris. He purchased a big bottle of champagne and handed me a glass. Then he shook the bottle until the cork popped, making a loud noise.
“Happy Near Year early, baby,” Chris said, as he poured the champagne and it overflowed my glass. I smiled and sipped it down. He hugged me and we walked over to the booth so Chris could take over. Jules took the headphones off and they shook hands. Chris gave him a glass of champagne too. Then we all toasted and I joined Chris behind the booth, grinding against him to the rhythm of the music. He had one hand on the equipment and the other hand on me.
The new year was almost here. At eleven fifty-eight Chris stopped the music and screamed, “Okay, the year is almost over. Make some noise.”
The crowd of over a thousand people screamed at the top of their lungs.
Chris continued, “I’m going to bring Jules to the ones and twos and he is going to spin y’all into the new year.”
Jules got behind the booth and put on a hyped collage of high-energy songs. The club went crazy with excitement. Chris grabbed me and we walked over to a quiet hallway off the main room. Chris hugged me as Jules called out the official countdown. Everybody began to yell in unison, “Ten-nine-eight-seven.” At six I held Chris tighter and screamed along, “Five-four-three-two-one. Happy New Year!” Streamers fell from the ceiling as Chris and I kissed. The new year meant a new beginning. It wasn’t a New Year’s Eve filled with high rollers and bright lights, but I couldn’t imagine a better way to bring in the near year than in the arms of the man I love.

The next morning I awoke to find Chris on the computer.
“Why are you up so early?” I asked.
“I’m looking for a job in Philly.”
“You are moving?”
“Yes. I almost lost you last year. And it’s not going to happen this year. I love you, baby.” I sat on his lap and helped him look through the job listings. I was so happy. My man was moving closer to me.
