A tear leaked out of my eye and down my cheek. The tenderness, the urgency in his voice baffled me. He’d been so cold, so distant with me since we got here, I didn’t understand this sudden tenderness.

  “I don’t get you, Davros.”

“I know.” He looked like he wanted to say something. I waited, wondering what he was keeping from me behind those gorgeous golden eyes of his.

“Come here.” He bent and his lips caressed mine, almost gentle this time, while his fingers held my face in place for him, possessive and firm. That wasn’t what he’d wanted to say, I knew it, but in an instant, it didn’t matter. There was only his body pressed to mine, his kiss heating every drop of my blood to lava-like intensity.

I kissed him back, losing myself in him. Letting go of all my fears, my anger.

The kiss seemed to go on forever, so raw and needy our teeth were scraping together, our heads angling this way and that, hands grabbing at each other. Kane’s huge hands gripped my ass, pressing me into the hardness of his cock, massaging the considerable cheeks like they were just perfect for him.

When his lips finally left mine, it was to leave a trail of fire along my throat. His fingers tore the dress from my shoulders, a ripping sound that, with his mouth all over me and his fingers bruising me, took on a wildly erotic feel.

“There goes a few thousand dollars,” I panted.

“Be quiet, girl, or I’ll gag you.”

I groaned and put my head back, letting him explore all of me, letting him lick and suck my nipples until they beaded to painfully hard points.

“You’re so fucking gorgeous. I could lose myself in you for days.” He sucked one nipple so hard I almost cried out, then he did the same with the other. My pussy throbbed.

“God, yes. Please, don’t stop.” I realized I was pulling at his belt, trying to get his pants undone, to feel that fabulous cock filling me. Making me forget.

I didn’t understand his hot and cold act, but I knew he did it out of some need to protect me. Some effort to shield himself, and me, from pain. Knowing that made me want to tear down his walls, to connect myself to him the only way I could.

“Take what you need from me, Kane. Take it all.”

“I’m not doing this for me. I want you to let go.”

Then as if he meant to leave me no choice but to forget all but him, he spun me so my chest was to the wall. I closed my eyes under the weight of the pure, molten need that rocked through me.

“You like when I fuck you like this, don’t you?” he rasped in my ear. One of his hands shoved the back of that skimpy dress up to my waist, the other fisting the back of my panties down and jerking them to my thighs.

“Yes…” I bit my lip before I could say something much dirtier. Where the sudden shyness came from, I didn’t know.

Grinding into me so that I felt every inch of his huge cock against my ass through his slacks, he brushed my curls from the side of my face. “Tell me you want it. Tell me how bad you want me to fuck your ass.”

Fuck, he made sex with him so hot, so taboo, so raw, I loved it. Tits hanging out of my dress, ass bare and grinding into his cock, there was nothing better. His fingers rubbed my clit, making me grind harder on him.

“I need you to fuck my ass, Sir.”

  “Good girl.”

Something clicked behind me and then that cool lube he liked to use touched my anus. He slid a slicked finger in a few times, sending that sweet mix of pleasure and pain zinging through me. Building my anticipation for him.

“Hurry, Kane. I need this, but we have to get out of here.”

He grabbed my hair and I yelped. “What did I say about rushing me?”

He kicked my legs apart, his fly unzipped, and then he was pushing into my back door, long and thick and hard.

No tenderness, no waiting for me to acclimate.

“Yes. Just like this.” I slapped the wall with my hands, bracing myself for him, bending over slightly to give him the angle he needed. He groaned.

“I want to take my time with you.” Hand over mine on the wall, he slid in and out of me. “Don’t think about anything else, angel, just me. Just us, and how good this feels.”

God, I loved this man. “Only you.”

“I pull away to protect you, angel. I am the bad guy because the bad guy keeps you safe. Never forget that.”

The warmth, the reassurance in his words drove home a painful realization. He was mine; this messed up, crazy bad man was mine, and yet I would never really have him. The dangers of his life, not to mention his obligation to marry Gala, would always keep us apart, even when he was right there with me. A tear splashed onto my cheek and I closed my eyes, losing myself in the excruciating ecstasy that was us making love. The closest I would ever get to really having Kane Davros as mine.

  “I won’t forget.”

“Tell me you hate me like a good girl.”

“I hate you, Davros. I’ll always hate you.” I love you. Will always love you.

He wiped the tears away, and gave me a few more slow, exquisite strokes. Then he sped up and my climax washed over me, yanking me into it’s perfect depths. I tried not to scream, knowing the whole hospital would hear us, thrashing against him until he grunted and went wild.

Kane pounded me hard and fast and without mercy, finally cursing softly in release. As I panted and tried to regain my equilibrium, he pulled me against him, resting my head on his shoulder. Brushing my hair back off my forehead while his lips left kisses on my neck.

“Such a perfect little sub. If I could, I’d keep you forever.” He pulled my underwear up and the dress down, then spun me to him. Only the slightest rise and fall of his chest showed he’d just fucked me crazy. I straightened the top of my dress, but with the rip down the middle, it flopped down to my waist, leaving my boobs bare.

“Damn. Look what you did, Davros.” I chuckled, picking up my purse.

“Here.” Smirking, he took off his jacket and slid it around me. I did up the front.

  “Now do up my pants.”

“Yes, Sir.” I smiled, tucking his cock away, pulling up the zipper, jerking his belt into place. The warmth in his eyes sent a tingle through me, and I nearly told him right then. Told him I loved him, that I would never stop loving him, no matter how dark things got, no matter how twisted his world made him. Instead, I kissed his hand, closing my eyes, pressing my mouth to each of his knuckles until he took my face and kissed me long and hard on the mouth.

Minutes later, we walked across the lot to the car, Kane’s big hand enveloping mine. He helped me in. When we were on the road, I put the window down and let the mountain air whip through my hair. That light, happy glow that always came after good sex with Kane pumped through me. At that moment, for the first time since my dad had ended up in the coma, I believed he’d be all right. Kane slid his hand into mine, and that Mafia distance, the almost kingpin he so easily became, seemed a million miles away.

“For the record.” He leaned over, his voice husky. “You looked fucking edible in that dress.”

So, he’d noticed. An absurd warmth spread through me, cheeks heating. I grinned into my lap.

Nothing could ruin the perfect feeling between us now. Not even when another car whizzed passed us on the winding mountain road, forcing Kane to swerve. “See, that’s why I don’t drive. I don’t like hotheads like that.”

  “But you drove my boat.”

“Yeah. Fran’s mom has a boat. She taught me to drive it.”

  “So you can’t drive?”

  “Not legally, no.”

  “We’ll change that.”

  “I’d need a car.”

  “I’ll get you one.”

Partway down the mountain, a yellow sign warned of a hairpin turn ahead. The car should have slowed down, but instead it sped up.

“Kane, shouldn’t you be slowing down?”

  “Shit.”

  “What?”

He pumped the break pedal. “It won’t stop. The b
reaks are busted.”

  “What?”

He pumped the break again, but the car continued down the road. And, worse, it was speeding up. We’d hit a steep incline.

“Kane…” My face paled as I watched a sharp turn race toward us.

“I know. Fuck.” He switched gears back and forth. It didn’t slow us down. He whipped around the bend. The wheels squealed and we hit a breakneck speed.

“Anika, lean forward and put your head between your knees.”

  “What?”

“It’s a crash position. Do it now.”

“Son of a bitch.” But I didn’t get the chance to do what he said. Another sharp turn hit us, but when Kane tried to round the bend, the turn was too sharp. The car rolled. I head myself scream, heard him shout. Then there was an ear-splitting crash. My head slammed into something, hard. Pain blazed behind my eyes.

Blackness took me as the smell of gasoline filled my nose.

  9

The smell of gasoline was the first thing I noticed. Consciousness grabbed me by the balls, yanking me from the world of black, and the smell made my nose twitch.

Much too slowly, the implications of a gas leak in a car crash hit me, stabbing through the pain pounding in my skull. I peeled my eyes open. The ground stretched out through the front windshield, but it was above my head, and the sky was in the wrong spot. A seatbelt held me to my seat, keeping me from dropping to the roof of the car.

“Fuck.” I turned my head. My heart shot up to my mouth. Anika sat in the seat next to me, strapped in the same as I was, except her eyes were closed and she didn’t move. Those fiery curls cascaded across the car ceiling like flames.

“Shit, Anika.” I was about to shake her, but stopped. Hadn’t I heard somewhere you aren’t supposed to move an accident victim? Damn it, she was the nurse. She’d know this. Except the smell of gasoline meant I’d have to get her out of here, fast. One spark to that gas, and the car could go up in flames in an instant.

I leaned over to look at her face, but pain blazed between my eyes. “Anika. Wake up, angel. Time to get gone.”

She didn’t move. I tried both our doors, but neither would open. I bent over to look at Anika’s face. Nausea washed over me in a violent wave and I swallowed it down. The side of her forehead had a purple bruise forming, like she’d slammed it on the dash. I tapped her face. “Angel, wake the hell up. Come on.”

  Nothing.

“Come on, baby. Wake the fuck up. You’re not leaving me now. Not like this.”

  Still nothing.

They say that in the moments before you die, when death has you in a grip you can feel, your life flashes before your eyes. I don’t know if that’s true. I’ve nearly died plenty times, usually when my father’s rage got the better of him. But today, as I fought to get the woman I loved out of my crushed Ferrari before it could explode, I didn’t see the life I’d lived flashing like a cheesy fucking eighties montage through my head. Instead, I saw my future. A future without Anika. A world where all the money in the world held nothing for me but emptiness, where nothing mattered without her by my side. Without this woman who’d made me adore her. Who made me love her.

The realization hit me like a wrecking ball to the chest. That strange feeling I’d had for her since she’d shot that thug at the hospital to protect me came into razor sharp focus. I knew what that feeling was now. I loved her. Loved her so hard my heart bled for her.

“You figure this out now, fuck head?” I shook off the unconsciousness that tried to pull me in and kicked at the windshield with both feet. A final violent wave hit me, and the world spun.

The last thing I remember was kicking the window in and hearing it give a loud crack. Then blackness had me at last.

  Flames.

A crackling sound snapped me awake and I jerked forward in my seat.

I blinked, groaning at the pounding in my head. Then I saw the smoke. It billowed outside the window of the car, which seemed to be upside down.

Now I remembered. The car had rolled.

“Shit.” Heart in my throat, I glanced around. The front windshield was smashed, and it looked like Kane had kicked it out, because one of his feet was lying in the glass. Kane was pushed forward in his seat, like he’d scooted down to kick the glass out, but his head was lulled back, eyes closed.

Not unlike the day at his father’s, a nurse’s instinct took over, refusing to let panic well up. Acting fast, I found my purse with my phone in it and tossed it out the window. Then I scrambled out of my seat, ignoring the pain that seared in my head. Glass cut at my hands and knees, but I crawled through the window, using my sleeve to shield my palms.

As soon as I was out, instinct told me to check Kane for injuries, but there was no time. Smoke surrounded the car, and flames licked at the back. I grabbed his feet, yanking him through the glass.

“Jesus, you’re as heavy as you look, Davros.” He dragged out, inch by painful inch. “I don’t suppose you could wake up now? You just have to be built like a brick shit house, don’t you.”

  “Leave…”

I froze for an instant, wondering if he’d spoken at all. He had; his eyes fluttered open. “Just leave me here. Go.”

“What? Don’t be stupid, Kane, I told you, I’m here for the long haul. Come on. Wake up.” It had to be his injuries making him talk like that. I bent down and put his arm around my shoulders, about to haul him up. His eyes rolled up to me. “Just leave me, Anika. You’re free.”

My heart gave a painful squeeze, and for a moment I thought I stopped breathing. I shook it off. Definitely head trauma talking.

“No such luck, Davros. You’re not getting rid of me that easily.”

He groaned—in pain?—and I threw his arm around me. He got his feet under him somehow and tried not to lean on me.

Behind us, the flames licking at the back of the car spread fast with a whoosh. I cursed and started to run. Kane gave a guttural rumble and then heaved me into his arms, half leaping, half throwing me away from the car. I landed with a grunt. There was a loud roar of fire just as Kane threw himself across the asphalt after me.

I lifted my head and rolled to a sitting position just as flames engulfed the car in brilliance. Fire crackled. I found my phone and turned it on. Still working. While I dialed 911, I was about to make some kind of remark about Kane’s expensive car, but when I turned to look at him, I froze. He lay on the ground beside me on his stomach, not moving.

“Kane?” My voice shook. I turned him over. He wasn’t out cold, but his eyes fluttered and they looked glazed with pain.

  “You were supposed to leave.”

I shook my head and gave the 911 operator who picked up our location. When I was finished, I leaned over Kane, who kept trying to talk. “Just shut up and lie still. Don’t move. Help’s coming.”

  “Told you…leave…”

“Yeah, well, since when do I do as I’m told, right?” I stroked his face, pushing down the pain and fear that reared up in me. I still might lose my father; I wouldn’t lose Kane too.

One of his giant hands reached up to cup my face, but he squinted like he couldn’t see me properly. “Anika, if something happens…I want…you need to know. I...I love you…”

My eyes went huge, and I thought my heart would burst with an odd mix of joy and horror. Joy, because I was hearing him say something I’d dreamt of him saying for days, perhaps far longer, but horror because I knew Kane would never say that. Not unless he was delirious.

Since I knew he’d likely forget later, I smiled through my tears and cradled his face. “I love you, too, Davros. I love you, too.”

It took the doctors a few hours to run their tests before they’d let me see my woman. The nurses tried to get me to stay in bed, squawking about keeping me overnight for observation. Screw that. I’d rather be shark bait then sit in some hospital bed doing nothing for hours on end. I had too much to do. Number one on my agenda, after finding Anika, hunt down whomever tried to have us killed and
bury them.

I found Anika being wheeled back from her own tests. She gave me a pained smile.

  “Still alive, Davros?”

  I smirked. “Disappointed?”

“Are you supposed to be up and around like that? Dr. Peters said we both have only minor concussions, but he said yours is more serious than mine.”

“I’ll be fine. Are you all right?” When she nodded, I looked at the doctor for confirmation.

“She’ll be fine in a couple of days. She’ll have to take some pain meds, and no strenuous activity for a couple of days, but she’ll be just fine. The same goes for you, Mr. Davros, only you’ll need a bit longer. I’d say a couple of weeks.”

“You’re keeping him for observation, right?” Anika asked.

Dr. Peters gave me a scowl. “I’ve told him we should, but he insisted on leaving as soon as he saw you.”

“Figures. Well, good, if you’re not staying, I’m not, either.” She pulled off her blankets. “I’ll stop in and see Dad before we go.”

Damn it. I wanted to push her back into the bed and make her stay there until her injuries were good and healed, but the truth was, I wanted her with me more.

Much to Peters’ chagrin, we went up to see Montrose, who apparently still hadn’t improved. Anika sat with him, hand in his. The guard posted in his room stood outside while we were in with him. I stood beside Anika, wishing like hell I could make her father well again. Wishing I could make all this mess of the last couple of weeks disappear.

“I was so afraid I’d lose you too, Kane.” Anika looked up at me.

“You’re not going to lose him, angel.” I rubbed her shoulders. “He’ll wake up, you’ll see. And when he does, you can find out who your real father is.”

“I wish I didn’t even care about that. I shouldn’t care. Not now. It’s just that…if I lose him, I want to know there is someone else out there I belong to. That I still have family out there.”
