I moved over beside him and put my head on his shoulders and I stared up at the sky as I became entranced by the wondrous flickering in the night sky. The lights undulated and pulsed in what seemed like a random pattern, with each permutation more beautiful then the last. I could get used to this I thought. Was it really so crazy for a black woman to move from America and try to build a new life in this beautiful and remote fjord in Iceland? I was not an impulsive person but already I was starting to imagine what life would be like here. A life stripped of all the bullshit that had accumulated back home, reduced to its simplest form and surrounded by what was important. I was already trying to figure out how to run my business from here and thought, so what if its only wish fulfilment. Isn’t it good to dream big I told myself and I added how bad could it be if I also had my Viking warrior by my side? If I’m going to dream I may as well have it all, the house in the fjord and the handsome man to go with it.
The noise of clinking glasses brought me out of my reverie. Jonas held up two frosted shot glasses. We downed another shot of the chilly Icelandic schnapps and its warmth quickly spread throughout my system. I could sit here all night looking up at the stars with this man beside me. “When do you have to return to the States?” asked Jonas.
That was question for another time, right now I just wanted to enjoy the moment. I wrapped my arms around this hunk of a man and began to slowly kiss him. The future would have to wait. I wanted to feel him close to me again, but in the back of my mind I was dreaming again, adding details and plans as the idea began to take root in the fertile soil of my mind. Could this country already have gotten a hold of my heart in a few short days I wondered. A light breeze blew in from the sea bringing the crisp scent of salt and if I listened closely I could hear the voice of the land telling me to take a chance and start a new life. As the voices crying out for a new beginnings rested gently in my ear Jonas pulled me close to him and all other thoughts were forgotten as our passions rose once again.
