He nodded. ‘They put us together for a reason.’

‘When we go back we need to do everything right. I don’t just mean with the business. I mean everything. Marriage. Kids. House.’

‘I’m not a big fan of children.’

‘Me neither, but if we look the part then that’s half the battle. I’m in this for the long term. We want to hide in plain sight and the more normal we are the better. People need to look at us and think we’re just like everyone else.’

  Leo smiled. ‘You consider everything.’

‘I have to.’ I smiled back. ‘It’s all part of the plan.’

  ‘The plan?’

‘Yes,’ I said. ‘We have to have a plan.’

‘How do you think of all these things?’

‘I’ve always loved making up stories,’ I told him. ‘It’s my favourite thing in all the world.’

  ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Writing can be a lonely profession but writers are never alone. Many people have helped with this book from the very early days when it existed only as an idea all the way through to the finished article. I am grateful to these heroes behind the scenes, sadly far too many to name – from friends and family to copy-editors and proofreaders, designers and typesetters.

However, some superheroes must be singled out. These are Philip Patterson, Ed Wood, Nithya Rae, Will Carver, Chris Whitaker and Lidia Teasca.

Finally, the author would like to draw particular attention to the support and encouragement of Liz Barnsley, who provided equal parts pom-pom waving and kicks in the rear. Both much needed.
