Jill looked as if she might fall over backward. Ed rushed to her side. “You okay, Jill?”
“I, uh,” she stammered, “I don’t know what to say.”
The corners of his lips curled as he gave her a teasing look. “Just answer their question.”
Jill’s eyes widened in disbelief.
Ed reached down, cupped her face in his hands, and whispered, “Please say yes.”
Epilogue
“Brush my hair, Jill,” Stacy said. “I want to be pretty like you.”
“You look beautiful,” Jill said as she ran the brush through Stacy’s curls. “How’s my veil?”
She leaned toward the girls, who inspected it and nodded. “You’re the prettiest bride in the whole wide world,” Tracy told her.
Jill’s eyes misted as she hugged her soon-to-be daughters. “And you two are the prettiest flower girls in the whole wide world.”
The organ began to play. Jill stood and gently guided the twins out the door. “It’s time to go down the aisle, girls.”
Stacy nudged in front of Tracy. “I wanna go first.”
“No, I want to go first.”
“Girls,” Jill said, her voice low and firm. They giggled. “You can walk together, side by side, okay?”
After the girls were halfway down the aisle, Jill had an overwhelming surge of maternal feelings. She wished her father could have been there to witness this wonderful moment. She glanced over at Jennifer, who’d taken her position right behind the twins and was about to walk toward the front of the church.
Matt extended his elbow, and she took it. “Thanks for walking me down the aisle, Matt.”
“Trust me—it’s an honor to bring my best buddy the woman he loves.”
She giggled. As the music changed, her heart pounded with excitement and anticipation of the full life she had ahead of her.
The doors opened wide, allowing everyone in the church to see her as she made her entrance. She took her first step toward Ed, the man she loved with all her heart. “Oohs” and “aahs” echoed throughout the church.
Then suddenly the girls piped up. “Here comes our new mommy!”
