“Look at you. All worked up,” Rick said, patting her thigh. He wasn’t the least bit afraid. Brittany froze when his hand remained where it was. That wasn’t the first time he’d been familiar with her and it made her physically ill. She shoved his hand away and he laughed but picked up the gun, shaking it at her. “Play nice. Or your friend back there won’t have much to save.”

He pushed down the pedal as the other car gained on them, and the SUV climbed in speed past sixty, then seventy, and by the time it hit eighty she’d pulled on her safety belt.

The road was dark and empty, stretching ahead of them like a void of nothingness. The highway lights were dead. The other car slowly gained on them again, and Rick let off the gas just slightly as it pulled alongside. Brittany’s heart fell. It wasn’t Colton. It was the gang members in an older Cadillac.

Rick realized it the same time she did and then the pop-pop-pop of gunfire had her ducking and screaming. The SUV swerved, and Rick punched the brake pedal with a curse. The SUV slid at a slight angle as the tires gripped the asphalt. When the car next to them also stopped, Rick hit the gas, throwing Brittany back in her seat. They picked up speed again, as did the other car.

The Cadillac swerved at the SUV in warning. They were neck and neck again, going at least eighty miles an hour, when Rick rolled his window down to hang the gun out of the car. He fired back three times, and one of the bullets must have hit a tire, because the Cadillac lost control and spun across all of the lanes behind the SUV.

Brittany turned around to watch it crash into one of the ditches that ran alongside the highway on either side. The headlights faded into the distance and she knew the car was finished.

When she glanced at the speedometer, she saw that they were still going almost one hundred miles per hour and long minutes ticked by as Brittany tried to see where they were in the blackness. Corn fields. So, they must be close to the old barn and house where the kids and she and Colton and Bart had stayed. “Where are we going?” she asked, trying not to sound too interested.

“It’s late,” Rick said. “I’m tired. I’ll find a place for us tonight and we’ll try the city again in the daylight.”

Brittany felt herself shrink into her chair. Rick noticed, and he put his hand on her thigh again, giving it a little squeeze.

She shoved his hand off, but he put it right back again, pinching the muscle with a bruising grip. “That’s gonna quit, you hear me?”

Brittany saw red. She didn’t think, she just reacted. Her hand went for the wheel without hesitation. She latched on with a death grip and tugged towards her. Rick shouted, fighting to right the wheel, but it was too late. Chaos ensued as the car turned toward the ditch too fast, and then they were flying through the air.

Side over side they rolled at such high velocity there was no counting or guessing. It was a whirlwind of metal crunching and Brittany’s thoughts scattered. Rick’s body was loose inside the SUV, he’d not put on a seat belt. Brittany had hers buckled but she still found herself being tossed about. The belt bruised and pulled at her flesh and bone. The last thing Brittany saw was the ditch coming up to finally swallow them as the SUV found a landing place that would allow for no more rotations.

The lip of it rose up out of the ground and they smashed into it with such force that everything went black.

  April 22, 2018

  Dear Readers,

You’ve made it nearly half way! Wow! I hope you enjoyed the new twists and action that is taking place. From here, I think you’ll be excited to find so much more of these types of scenes. Thanks to all of you awesome readers for following along with The Long Fall series, and your feedback in reviews makes it easy to push onward towards the next awesome installment. Make sure you drop a line (even a short one) and let us know what you thought. It’s how we are aware that we need to make sure the next one gets out very fast.

Co-authoring has been such a neat experience, and the characters are really like old friends to me now. (I hope it’s the same for you) For this episode, I noticed that we’ve shown you how certain groups come together into larger ones, and others were separated. It’s all part of the plan to reveal where everyone will be at the final. I also hope you enjoyed the prologues and glimpses into the future of white with Brittany Tanner. As you’ve seen, she does meet up with our other characters! Finally! She’s showing us that they don’t all stay apart. Exciting.

Mike Kraus has been a fabulous example for this new genre. I am learning so much. His additions make certain that the books are thrilling. Thanks to my writing partner, I’ve been able to put together a more intense story with new twists.

I really hope you’ll keep reading the continuation of The Long Fall saga and now book five is already shaping up so get ready. We’re planning on this being a 10-12 series, with each book being around 25,000-30,000 words long, and we’ll be publishing a new one every month.

I am always open to discuss my books with you on facebook or email me at [email protected]
