Tuck Morgan, Plainsman (The Gun of Joseph Smith) Page 13

by Katherine R. Chandler

He wondered where that poke-bonneted girl lived. He'd like riding by her place and just happening to drop in. Just a neighborly visit like. He wondered how she'd look standing. He'd only laid eyes on her twice, and both times she'd been on a wagon seat.

Tucker slid off his horse close alongside their wagon. He knew Holloway had heard him because the guide raised his voice just a little.

Holloway was talking to Tommy Bell. He said, "Well, old Tom Wadson took more scalps than anyone I ever met. One rendezvous, might have been on the Green in 1836 or thereabouts, old Tom had more prime scalps than I did beaver. Wore out a good knife takin' 'em, Tom did. Why, old Tom told me . . ."

Tucker grinned, shaking his head in amazement. Once, it took a buffalo stampede to get more than three words out of Grant Holloway. The guide had talked more during the last summer than in all the other years Tucker had known him. Now he spent comfortable hours filling Tommy Bell's ears with old mountain man stories. Astonishing.

Tucker exhaled in deep satisfaction. No question about it, all things were right in his world. Without hesitation he dropped to a knee and dipped his head in thanks for Holloway's safety and his own contentment.

Coming from his tent, Paul Laban caught the scene with his quick eye. Perfect, the artist thought. The heavy wagon, with the young plainsman in prayer. Reins and a rifle in one hand, his horse nuzzling his neck, with a game-loaded pack animal alongside.

It was too right to wait. Paul Laban hurried to his easel. Yes, this would be a good one. The painting's title came clear to him.

  "Mormon Hunter Giving Thanks."

  Laban began his outlines.
