  CHAPTER 7

“Damn it!” I heard him say. “Mia, don’t go. Mia. Shit!” That was the last thing I heard because what I felt next made me scream in agony. Robert had injected me with more of the V2 and it hurt a lot. He covered my mouth and soothed me. “It is going to be okay. I promise…so sorry Mia… I don’t know what happened.” His voice might have cracked, I wasn’t sure though.

Within minutes – that felt like hours later – I felt strong and my bite had healed fast. Sitting up, I looked at him. His eyes were closed and he was still holding onto my wrist like he would never let me go. As sweet as it was, my wrist was tender.

“Robert I’m fine. Don’t worry. I’m not saying a word. It’ll be our secret but could you let go. It still kind of hurts.” I waited for him to release it, and he did but slowly. He pulled away and I sat on the edge of his bed unsure of how to say what I wanted to say. So I just went for it “It’s not only your fault… I don’t know. It’s weird to me. I’ve never felt anything like that before. But why did it happen?”

“I took a lot of blood from you, and the V2 was working before I that but then it didn’t and that is why it hurt after I gave it to you again, I’m not supposed to give you more than once a day. Only if you use needles. Your body was weak and I thought you were going to__ you didn’t look good.” His face was expressionless like he had just seen a ghost or something. I didn’t know what to say to him. “I don’t know if it’s wise do that again, it is just too dangerous. I’ve done it before but no one else’s blood has ever called to me like yours has. Do you feel anything?”

I wasn’t going to lie to him. The connection was there –between us. The bond and I couldn’t lie, I like it. That was the bad part because I still remembered what Mereily had said: “He’s done some bad things.” But I didn’t want to question him about it at the moment.

“Yeah, the connection is there, is that normal? I mean after you bond with someone?” I asked out loud.

“Yes. But it is too strong for just two bites. It doesn’t make sense.” He looked frustrated and confused. He had his hands in his pockets and he was standing a few feet away from me looking at everything around but me, the whole time while he spoke.

“I’m new at this, so I don’t know what you’re talking about but I can tell you exactly what was going on with me if you want to know, I don’t know if that would help you understand whatever it is you’re not getting but if you do please tell me, I’d like to know.”

“It’s not that just__ look, we will talk about this later. We need to do the tour before the ball and it is getting kind of late. Also, you might want to change.” He pointed at a spot of blood on my dress.

“Great! I liked this dress.” He made a noise when I walked into the bathroom. I ended up picking a different dress that had been my second choice earlier.

It was light brown and it also had the design of Virgo. It was slightly shorter and it had transparent long sleeves. I liked. Putting makeup on quickly I made sure my hair wasn’t too messed up. Catching my reflection in the mirror, I noticed that my skin was starting to look different. It was getting whiter and my hair was silkier.

I left the same shoes and accessories on since they also matched this dress. Walking out of the bathroom I saw Robert waiting by the front door, with his back to me. He heard me getting closer and opened the door without a word. We walked in silence, until we were on the first floor.

“You already know where the main dining area is and the garden. This is all part of the dorms.” He said in a bored tone as we walked a little too fast for my liking.

We went through a black door and walked outside and we crossed a small bridge that was over a pond. “This is the main school. Your friends can show you inside tomorrow morning since it’s locked right now.” He said dryly while I was looking at the huge building a few yards away. “We have an indoor pool, it is by the garden and the dining area of the school which is easy to find. We also have two gyms, one with weights and the main gym. Both are right over there,” He pointed at a building between the school and the dorms, “and the college student dorms are on the other side of campus. You don’t really need to know much about them since you will not be going there for another year but just in case you were wondering.“ He scratched his head and sighed. “That’s it. We are done.” Robert still didn’t look at me. He was still trying to ignore me and was just doing his job, I could understand that. But I didn’t have to like his attitude.

“Really Robert? You’re really going to treat me like that? God, I didn’t know you disliked me that much or that my blood was nasty in any way but you don’t have to be like that to me. I get it. I’ll take my chances with the stupid needles okay. Who cares right? Jesus!” I stomped off and left him standing there looking stupid. He was probably not expecting that and the fact that I caught him off guard was definitely why he didn’t say anything back. Thinking I knew my way back inside, I took my chances and retraced my way back and found the main hal. It took me some time but Robert didn’t bother following me or even help, in fact I didn’t know where he was now.

I ran into Mereily on the way to my room.

“Mia, you changed?” She looked at my dress and nodded, clearly liking my choice. “Never mind that, we need to go up to my room and start getting ready for the ball it’s at six and we don’t have much time left.” Mereily said, I smiled as a reply and followed her back to her room.

“My room is down the hall.” I told her.

“Yeah I already went to look for you earlier but you weren’t. Why is your room the only one on that wing?”

I knew she would ask. “I don’t know. It’s probably because of Robert.”

“That is why. Duh, I forgot about him. Oh! Did he show you the school?”

“Yeah, from the outside. He said it was locked so we couldn’t walk around inside.”

She frowned. “No, it’s not. The library and the computer lab are in there, they never close. Just in case students want to do some extra studying,” She told me like I didn’t know. “Must’ve forgotten,” She shrugged and went on talking about her teachers and what not.

I couldn’t believe what he had done. He didn’t want to spend any alone time with me anymore. Fine, so if that was the way he wanted it. So be it.

I was babbling mindlessly without even noticing when Sophie came in the room. Their room was smaller. They had less space but overall, same look. “Hey, I just got my dress. It’s awesome!” Sophie was holding a box that she laid on a bed and she opened carefully. She showed us her dress and it was pretty Then, Mereily went to her armoire and took hers out to show it off too. Sophie’s was a creamy color, long and it shined in the light.

“What do you think?” Mereily’s dress was long too. But hers was violet and it would look good on her because of her skin tone and her bright eyes.

“It’s beautiful. They both are,” It was true.

“Where’s your dress?” Sophie asked me looking at the dress I was wearing. I realized how different the dress that I had received looked from theirs and wondered why that was.

“Oh. In my room, you guys want to come with me and get
ready in my room?” They smiled and said yes. We walked down the hall, where we heard music blaring from a room and turned to my own little narrow hall where my room was. I opened the door and let them in first.

“Oh my god, it’s huge!” Mereily looked around like she was entering into her first apartment. Sophie was also impressed as she stood in the center of the room looking around at everything.

“Huge. Is an understatement,” Sophie told her.

“I’ll trade you any day.” It was low enough for them not to hear. “The bathroom is this way.” That got their attention and they followed. Then they went into the restroom. “Forgot my dress,” I said remembering how I’d left it by the bed. They were awing while I had gone back into the room to get the dress when I saw Robert coming out of his bathroom. Grabbing my box, I ignored him.

“Getting ready?” He asked as I was walking towards the bathroom.

I turned back around and stared at him for a second. He was already wearing his tuxedo, he looked even better. It wasn’t fair.

“Yeah, with some friends so we don’t have to be alone, you know?” I said as I was about to turn but then stopped, “Oh and by the way the school is not locked just in case you didn’t know.” I turned on my heel and joined the girls in my closet where I found them snooping around and looking through my clothes. “Here’s my dress.” I took it out and showed them.

“It’s amazing, Mia that’s like the kind of dress only royalty wear.”

  Royalty?

“What? You mean, not everybody wears dresses like this?” I was shocked to hear that. Although I had wondered why mine was different.

“No way. It’s just royalty like Gene.” Sophie said and by the look on her face she didn’t seem too happy about it.

“What do you mean by royalty?” I didn’t know what they were talking about, but I had an idea at the mention of Genevieve‘s name.

“Only if you are related to a King and Queen or someone in the higher ups,” Sophie continued.

“That’s real bull.” Mereily’s tone was of disappointment.

“What is?” I asked her, hoping she wasn’t upset with me.

“Robert is my second cousin, and I am not considered royalty.” My jaw dropped and opened while I looked at her. I really looked and couldn’t believe that Robert was her cousin, he was nothing like her.

“Well, I’m definitely not related to any of them. So why did they give me that dress?” I pointed at it where it was hanging in the closet.

“Maybe you are, you just haven’t had the chance to meet anyone yet.” Mereily said this time with a lighter tone.

“Mereily, I’m sorry. I won’t wear it if it makes you uncomfortable. I don’t want to be part of any royalty. It’s all crap if they’re being unfair.” Honestly I couldn’t believe how the system worked so I was shocked to hear at what Mereily had said.

“No. You’re wearing the dress and you’re going to be the bomb. It’s not your fault, they’re unfair but that’s not your problem okay?” She smiled not very convincingly.

“If you say so but cheer up, or I’ll make a fool out of myself in front of everyone.” I wasn’t sure of how I would do such a thing.

  The girls giggled.

We got dressed and ready. My gown looked incredible.

Sophie decided to pull her hair sideways putting a diamond clip to hold it. Her hair was already curly but she made her dark curls bigger and it looked so gorgeous. Mereily, pulled back her bangs, she teased it to give it a fresh look and added sparkling beads throughout her hair like a spider web and left hers straight. It still looked like it took hours to get it to look like she did.

I, on the other hand pinned it up from both sides and didn’t necessarily curl it all the way but only enough to make waves and I used pearl diamond clips.

All three of us looked fabulous! Like Mereily would say. I decided to go natural with my makeup, using the usual plus adding extra eyeliner and a neutral light eye shadow and mascara. I didn’t want to stand out and I encouraged Mereily and Sophie to be more dramatic with theirs. When I looked at the time it was already five-thirty-eight. We decided to grab some snacks and drinks from the kitchen and sit and watch some TV.

While Sophie was using the restroom, I decided to tell Mereily something I wasn’t sure of telling Sophie, just because I didn’t know her that well.

“I promised to not say anything but I have to tell someone and you’re the only person I trust.” Turning to Mereily, I confessed

“Tell me, what’s wrong?” She asked concerned.

“I – I bonded with Robert. It was an accident! I don’t know we just kind of liked it I guess. Now we can’t tell anybody and we’re kind of stuck with each other.” It felt better telling someone about it.

“Oh my gosh! Earlier when I came looking for you I saw you guys, just a glimpse. The door wasn’t shut all the way. But I didn’t think anything of it. I just thought you were getting the V2.”

I was embarrassed at the thought of her walking in on us and having to watch that. “Yes, but then it got a little out of hand and__” I looked away, ashamed of myself.

“That is odd. Can you feel it?” She asked, curious.

“Right now? Yes, I can still feel him. I’ve been trying to block it but I can’t.”

“You shouldn’t though, in class I learned that you only feel it if you’re touching. They say it’s like you’re both one and its very intense but if you’re not touching you shouldn’t be able to feel it. Only full vampires do or those who are close to turning into one.” Obviously she knew what she was talking about and I wasn’t about to doubt her word which worried me.

“Robert is going to be one soon.” I pointed out.

“Yes, but not just him. Both sides would need to be turning or close to being a full vamp for that to happen.” Mereily sounded apologetic.

We heard Sophie opening the door and gave each other a quiet look.

“After the ball, could we talk?” I whispered.

“Definitely,” She whispered back right before Sophie joined us.

“What’s all the fuss about?” She asked, sitting back down.

“Uh, Nothing, I was just telling her about that cutie you like, what was his name?” It was Mereily who answered quickly.

“It’s Kevin and I really do like him.” She corrected her as she blushed.

“Yeah, he’s one of the royals and they tend to stick together, you’ll notice at the ball__ Oh crap it’s time!” Mereily jumped up and pulled us with her. “Come on guys.” She dragged us out the door. We had to walk slowly, our dresses were one reason and the crowd of people walking down the stairs was another.

It looked like a red carpet event and that was nothing compared to this. I saw maybe two other girls wearing dresses similar to mine, of course theirs was a different color and style.

We got to the bottom of the stairs when I heard someone shout.

“Everyone have a blast!” Genevieve said loud enough for most to hear out in the hall.

“I don’t know why you like her, she’s evil.” I joked and made Sophie laugh in the process.

Mereily faked a giggle, “She’s stuck up sometimes but once you really get to know her she’s very___”

“Shallow and stubborn,” Sophie interrupted her and I had to laugh at that.

Finally we went into the dining room and our mouths fell open. “They just keep getting better and better.”

It was Mereily who said it.

  ROBERT

Genevieve was flirting with Jack McKey, a senior. She had not noticed me entering the Dining room. Jack however, did. He nodded at me and Genevieve turned to look, her attitude completely changed. She left Jack and his friends by a table they were about to take and walked towards me.

She was wearing the typical royal gown. It was definitely her type, red and black with a hint of white, long and form fitted. She smiled and came to a stop directly in front of me. “Hey, we were just talking about you handsome.” She
barely kissed me on the lips. “You want to join us?”

  “Us?” I asked.

“Them. Us? Why does it matter? Robbie you’re not jealous are you?” She asked taking a hold of my hand.

I really wasn’t, the only reason why that upset me was because I was trying to have a relationship with Genevieve But she wasn’t helping since she was throwing herself at other men. I felt nothing towards her being flirtatious with others, but it was just dangerous and she knew it.

“I guess a little.” I lied to play the part. We both knew what game we were playing and we had to try and do it right. I had always known she had a thing for Jack and anyone could see why, he was a nice guy. Sometimes the thought of not being with her was like heaven. “How about we get our own table?” The idea of having those two all over each other in public was just not going to work for us.

Genevieve talked about herself of course, for what seemed like an eternity. About fifteen minutes had passed, more people were starting to come in and the noise level was going up. Suddenly music started playing from the speakers on what was the stage. Denise, one of Genevieve’s friends came to sit at our table and started chattering away. She was as annoying as Gene but that was why she was friends with her and others just like them two. Someone tapped my shoulder interrupting my thoughts.

“Hey, how are you doing’?” Kevin, another senior asked, taking a sit to my left.

“Fine and you?” I asked to be courteous. Kevin and I had been friends. He and I had been roommates a few months ago before I went to Maine. Now and then we talked occasionally but we were not close friends by any means.

“Just enjoying the view, you know.” He playfully punched my arm and let out a laugh.

“You never change.” Kevin was not a ladies’ man, more like a douche bag but girls were always following him around. I just did not understand it.

“Got to have fun dude. You should try it sometime and maybe you wouldn’t be so damn uptight all the time.” He said it with sarcasm but I let it go as soon as Mia walk into the room. She caught my undivided attention. “But then again you do know how to have fun. Bad boy Townsend is still in there somewhere.”
