And then, still joined in every possible way, sleep took me.

  Epilogue

  ~ Dane ~

  “Language, Carson!”

I stifled a laugh as my brother-in-law snapped at the other soldier, covering my daughter’s ears with his hands and glaring at the startled man. During the four years I’d served with him, Byrne had been the foulest-mouthed of us all, and I knew I wasn’t the only one who found this new, cleaner version amusing.

Our new house was bursting with men, and I shook my head a little, still not sure how my treasure had talked me into throwing this housewarming party.

  I didn’t do “friends.”

“I’m not usually one for crowds, either, love, but everyone here is your friend.” Wesley wrapped his arms around me from behind, leaning against my back as he answered my unspoken thoughts. “So stop hiding out on the patio and come mingle.”

“I’m barbecuing, not hiding,” I huffed.

“Well, I need you to introduce me to your friends, so stop ‘barbecuing’ for a minute and come inside.”

My little treasure was feeling bossy, and he grabbed my hand and started pulling me behind him without waiting for my agreement. “Your brother is the one still serving with these men, Wesley,” I grumbled. “He can handle introductions.”

“I’ve already met the guys from Ty’s unit, Dane,” he said, smiling back at me and looking fucking beautiful. “I need you to introduce me to the dragons.”

I sucked in a breath, coming to a halt just inside the door. It was impossible for another dragon to enter my territory without antagonizing the beast within me, and yet… my dragon was calm. Now that my mate had brought it to my attention, though, I could clearly feel the presence of the other dragons — I just didn’t understand why my own was so accepting of their intrusion.

Wesley rolled his eyes, tugging on my hand again. “Because they’re your friends, love,” he repeated.

He didn’t understand. “Dragons are territorial, Wesley. It’s instinctual for us to respond to a threat—”

“There’s no threat here, Dane.” I still hadn’t moved, and he finally gave up pulling on me. He turned and cupped my face in his soft hands, looking up at me with an expression that made my heart do an inexplicable little flip. “Your dragon knows it. I know it. Accept it. These men are your friends. It’s time to let them in.”

“It looks like you already did,” I grumbled, spying Maks near the kitchen, flirting with a soldier whose name I couldn’t remember.

Wesley laughed, and I vaguely sensed his patient exasperation, as if I’d missed the point — but I couldn’t concentrate on that right now.

“Your daughter is beautiful, youngling,” Anik said as he came up and clapped me on the shoulder. “And this is your mate?”

“Yes. This is Wesley,” I said, glancing between Anik and his son warily. I remembered the hot temper of the younger dragon when I’d appeared in their territory and immediately started to bristle.

My treasure rested one hand on my shoulder, somehow managing to scold me through our bond while smiling winningly at our guests. “We’re so glad you and your family could come,” he said. “You live up in Alaska?”

Anik returned Wesley’s smile, regarding him warmly. “That area is in our territory, but we spend most of our time farther east. This is my son, Ben, and my mate, Mikkel. Thank you for inviting us. It’s been a long time since we’ve come this far south.”

“Well, I certainly hope it won’t be the last time we see you,” Wesley said. “In fact, you’re welcome to stay with us while you’re here. Let me show you the guest room…”

He continued chattering happily as he pulled Anik and Mikkel away, pausing to kiss Elise’s head as he passed his brother and accept more compliments as the older couple admired her.

“How did you know Wesley was your fated mate?” Ben asked me, staring after my treasure with a look of naked longing. “Oh, calm down,” he said when I turned and glared at him. “I don’t want him, although yes, he’s wonderful. I just wondered…”

“If there’s someone out there for you?”

Ben nodded, sipping at his beer. “My ata didn’t find my father until he was over a thousand years old,” he said wistfully. “But you’ve found your mate, and you can’t be much older than I am.”

Before I could answer him, Ty came over and held a fragrant Elise out to me. “Bennett, your little princess needs her papa,” he said with an evil grin.

She cooed up at me, sucking on her fist before waving it around and smearing her uncle with slobber. I grinned, catching the eye of my mate across the room as Ty tried to duck away from our daughter’s enthusiasm.

Wesley was laughing with Mikkel and a couple of the soldiers I’d served with, and he raised his eyebrow in a silent question. I shook my head, winking at him over his brother’s head. My treasure smiled at me, looking surprised, and I realized that I was happy.

I was happy to take on diaper duty.

I was happy to see my mate having a good time.

I was even happy that he’d filled our home with these people.

  Our family, and… our friends.

Even without his sight, he could still hear; could still feel. He caught Aidan's sharp inhale, imagined his nostrils flaring as he drew in the scent. He felt that crackle of electricity explode into a torrent, the power of the alpha reaching him, seizing him. He heard the rumble of a fierce, possessive growl as Aidan's wolf pressed forward, claiming his human senses.

When he finally opened his eyes, his friend looked half feral. Aidan’s eyes glowed an inhuman yellow, and he licked his lips as he advanced, each step heavy and filled with the promise of relief.

But still Luke fought against it.

"Aidan, you don't want to do this. You don't want me. It's just your wolf. You can fight this. You can--"

"Mine," he snarled, and the wolf inside of him yelped.

Aidan was on him in an instant. His massive, powerful body covering Luke's. Even through their clothes, it sent a flood of relief washing over him. And when Aidan claimed his mouth in a bruising rush of lips, teeth, and tongue, the discomfort and pain lessened considerably, replaced with a strongly growing need.

He couldn't refuse if he wanted to, and he definitely didn't want to. His hands moved into Aidan's thick hair, gripping it like a lifeline as the alpha took what he wanted, plunging his tongue into Luke's mouth, dominating his every squirming movement with his body resting on top of Luke's.

He could feel his alpha's cock straining against his loose-fitting pants. The thick rod pressed insistently against his stomach, nearly searing him through his clothing, and Luke moaned against Aidan's mouth, wanting more.

The kiss broke, and his alpha's eyes blazed gold. A growl made his word almost unintelligible, but it sliced through Luke, heating his blood anew. "Mine."

"Yes," he said breathlessly. "Only yours."

Aidan lifted his weight off of him, and immediately the pain return
ed, flaring in his nerve endings. Luke cried out, but the sound was stifled when--without hardly any effort at all--Aidan flipped him over.

His belly hit the mattress, his elbows holding him up as he watched the alpha behind him. Aidan gripped his pants and yanked them down, baring his ass to what should have been unbearably cool air, but all Luke could feel was heat. Heat and moisture, his hole beyond slick now.

Aidan's nostrils flared, and he growled low in his throat. Pushing himself up on the bed--something that made Luke whimper and writhe--he yanked down his pants, freeing his cock. Luke swallowed the needy sound that rose in his throat. His alpha was huge. Long and thick, and already hard as a rock. He'd done that. He'd made him that way, and his wolf preened at the thought, making him eagerly shift his knees under him on the bed, lifting his ass up in the air.

Another deep, rolling growl, and Aidan was there, lapping at his hole. Luke gasped, gripping the sheets harder, thrusting his hips backward, demanding more. His alpha's tongue thrust inside once, twice, a third time, and Luke's cock ached with the need for release.

"Please," he whimpered in a shuddering breath.

Aidan lifted his head, and Luke watched as the powerful male fisted his cock, giving it a few long strokes.

Luke's muscles worked, spreading his cheeks, his hole practically begging for the alpha's attention. His hand went to his own cock, his member painfully hard, but before he could stroke and provide himself with some relief, Aidan was there, and his hand wrapped hard around the base.

  Just like in his dream.

"No," he growled in Luke's ear. The word was a command, spoken firmly but without malice. It made him shudder. "I am your alpha. Your hole belongs to me, and I fuck you whenever I want to fuck you. You come when I tell you to, and not a second before. Understood?"

Oh, God. Heat exploded through his body, but Aidan gripped that much tighter, a ripple of pain coursing through him. His balls were heavy and full, his body ready for release, but Aidan wouldn't allow it, and the dominance in his voice made it that much harder to avoid.

"Yes," he breathed, burying his face against the bedspread.

  "Yes, what?" He growled.

  "Yes, alpha."

"Good." His hand moved affectionately over Luke's shoulderblade, almost a stroke as if his fingers were running through his fur.

The alpha released his cock, and Luke bit his lip to keep from whimpering. So needy. Nothing else seemed to matter, his human worries completely gone. And when Aidan moved behind him, he clenched in anticipation, startled by the stinging smack as his alpha's hand connected with his sensitive flesh.

"Relax." Another steady command, as if Aidan was in complete control, not his beast.

He did his best to obey, drawing in a shuddering breath. His muscles were so tight, but he forced them to ease, one by one. When he finally unclenched, Aidan returned to his previous position, and Luke's eyes practically rolled back in his head as he felt his alpha's tongue prodding his hole again.

He moved down, tracing a line across the sensitive stretch of skin beneath his hole, laving his tongue over Luke's balls, using the powerful muscle to tease and caress. Luke dug his knees hard into the bed to keep from thrusting his hips backward, and was rewarded for his patience and obedience when Aidan came up to his side of the bed, cock in hand.

Luke was practically salivating with the need to taste him, and when the velvety tip was pushed between his lips, he moaned. He tasted just as good as he smelled. A rich, masculine flavor with a hint of spice that had Luke taking his alpha's cock all the way to the back of his throat.

He wasn't quite able to take his full length, but he tried, and a pleased rumble filled him with pride as his alpha slowly thrust into his mouth. Though Aidan had control, holding his head in place, using his mouth for his own pleasure, Luke made use of his tongue, swiping it across the sensitive slit, pressing it against the flesh that bound head to shaft, making Aidan groan and buck against him before he pulled out.

Luke felt the pressure shift on the bed, Aidan taking position behind him. His muscles clenched with anticipation, but another swift smack reminded him that his alpha wasn't going to tolerate any disobedience. He forced himself to relax, letting out a shuddering breath, squirming when he felt Aidan's weight over top of him, so close but not nearly close enough.

He had to bite his lip just to keep from whimpering a plea, and still the sound came out, muffled behind his lips and teeth. Aidan rumbled a growl, obviously knowing what he'd wanted to say, and he felt the alpha's teeth scrape lightly over his shoulderblade, making him shudder.

"Go on. Tell me what you want."

The order surprised Luke, but he wasn't about to disobey. His wolf was controlling his instinct, putting him fully into the submissive role.

  "You. Need you."

A low snarl near his ear, and the rush of air, the snap of teeth as Aidan bit so close, making his skin tingle. "More."

"Need you to fill me. Fuck me."

  "How?"

"Hard," he breathed, unable to stop himself from squirming, feeling Aidan's thick cock slide over his cheeks.

"You want me to fuck you like an alpha would?" Aidan's hand fisted in Luke's hair, he turned the subordinate wolf to look at him, and Luke was caught in his gaze like captured prey.

"Yes. Please." The words were shaky, and a whimper spun from them, trembling through his whole body.

“Where’s whatsisname?” Ty asked, handing me a beer. “Jared. Did you leave him back in Wisconsin?”

“Jason,” I corrected him, slouching down on the couch. “And that’s been over for a few months. Thanks,” I added, tipping the beer up in a mock salute before taking a drink.

“Fuck, Maks,” Ty laughed, shaking his head. “You go through men faster than my niece goes through diapers. I thought you dragons were all ‘there can be only one’ and shit.”

I laughed along with him, ignoring the little twinge I felt at the jibe. Not every dragon shifter could be as lucky as my friend, Dane, who had found his fated mate in Ty’s twin, Wes. The first time Dane had seen Wes, his otherself had instantly recognized the pretty man as his destiny.

I’d met Dane over two hundred years ago, when I still thought I was human. He’d been there when my dragon had awoken, and when my otherself had first burst forth he’d saved me from causing harm to the people that mattered to me.

Before that day, I hadn’t known such things existed, and it had been both shocking and terrifying… but not as much as the thought of what I would have become if my friend hadn’t been there to take me under his wing. Dane was already centuries old by the time I came along, and in that time he had seen our kind do unspeakable things. He’d shielded me from most of it, guiding and mentoring me in what it meant to be what we were and becoming my closest friend along the way—a relationship closer than family for both of us.

Our nature meant that we lived lives always subtly apart from the humans around us, but that had changed for Dane when he found his fated mate. He had a family of his own now, and I’d never seen my friend as happy as he was now that he had Wes and had become a father.

He was a good man, and he deserved it.

Seeing what he had, though, had made me increasingly discontent with the endless parade of boyfriends who flowed in and out of my own life. I enjoyed human men, but from the moment I’d discovered what I really was, I’d understood that I would always need to keep them at arm’s length. I’d learned that from Dane, but where he had been wracked with guilt over the way dragonkind treated the humans who didn’t know that we lived among them, I’d always been more laid back.

Dane had been driven to protect humans. I was much more interested in simply enjoying them.

Our dragon powers made it easy for our kind to get what we wanted in lif
e, but I’d never had to resort to that to fill my bed. I knew that men were attracted to my dragon-built human body as much as to my admittedly-hedonistic attitude, and I couldn’t ever remember meeting a man I wanted that I couldn’t have.

Of course, I always knew that I couldn’t have them for long, but I was used to that.

Humans were too short-lived to get attached to, and there was so much I couldn’t reveal to them that getting truly close was not an option. Which had never been a problem. Keeping things fun and casual had always worked just fine for me. I liked things easy, and if there was a level of intimacy lost, I accepted that as the price of being a dragon.

Lately, though, I’d started to feel… restless.

Watching Dane with his fated mate had shown me something I hadn’t believed was possible for us, and it stirred something inside me that I wasn’t at all sure I liked. It made me less and less content with being alone, but at the same time, I wasn’t satisfied with the company of the kind of men who had been perfectly acceptable before.

  It was maddening.

Dragons were territorial creatures, and even among friends we tended to live apart. Still, I’d grown restless in my own territory back east and lately found myself heading north frequently to spend time with my friend Ben, another dragon shifter I’d met when Dane and I first came to this continent after getting chased out of Europe by my sire, or more often, pulled here, drawn to the west to be around Dane and his family.

Dane had only found his mate a year and a half ago, and they were still sickeningly in love with each other. Even though I knew Dane considered me family, too, I didn’t want to intrude… but I couldn’t seem to stay away. Being around them didn’t quite cure my loneliness, but at least it was better than being on my own.
